I live near here- at 6th Ave and 19th St. and its a nice area. There's a few grocery stores nearby. Vin Rouge on 5th is a bar with a nice wine selection. Sidecar at 5th and 15th has decent food & drink.
The laundromat on 5th and 20th is open 24 hours and does a great job with drop off laundry service.
The Bagel Factory on 5th and 17th (I think? or is it Prospect Ave) has yummy bagels.
Adam's Wine & Liquors on 5th and 17th is a great place to buy wine and Polish liquors. Eagle Provisions on 5th and 18th has a great selection of beer.
Its a good area; I feel safe here. -
Ditto on Sidecar
Bay River Wine on 5th/14th has cheap and big selection
Harbor Fitness - good gym
Lenny's Pizza on 5th/16th ish
all good stuff.... -
I used to live on 15th between 3rd and 4th and I looooooved my neighborhood. There's tons of good stuff around and things are still pretty cheap. Also, you're just two blocks away from Buttermilk, home of the Cashank!
-
You'll also have easy access to the most charming little OTB in Brooklyn.
-
dont forgot the new Ellis Bar on 5th and 17th and Beer Table is just up the block. This is one hood that still has an upside

I live in the area. I love it. Check out the Greenwood heights forum also for more neighborhood goodies.

I'm on 15th between 5th and 6th. Great area, never had a single problem beyond the occasional noisy people walking up the street late at night...but I think that's pretty standard for, well, anywhere in the city. Great access to F & R trains, plus the new Union Market has totally improved the food situation. Fifth Ave is a little scruffy, but safe. And hey, if you're in the market for rental furniture or off-brand junior's clothing, Rent-a-Center and Mandee are right around the corner! And 7th Ave has everything you could want in the way of upscale Slopitude. Get that I love the area? ... My only caution as your look for an apartment would be to check out how close you are to vacant lots...Not because they're dangerous, but because they don't stay vacant for long, and it can be a little dusty/noisy to live next to yet another construction project. And if you're using a broker, stay away from Naveed at AltaNYC!! High on the pressure, low on the info. I've heard bad things about Alta NYC altogether, but had an especially unpleasant experience with him...

Gospel!
Great area, tons of construction, screwing things up for the locals for 4 years now. Slowing down, but not gone. But that's the same all over the South Slope and Greenwood Hts.
Where you are looking is a good 'nabe. Welcome, albeit a wee bit north from me

Subject: neighborhood
I live around the area between 3rd and 4th av. The proximity to subway, convenience, the access to the center shopping area and restaurants are great. I never had problem walking back at night, which is at latest around 12 am.
However, there are issues as well--street is full with garbage, some of the building (with people who has been here for longer time before the rent goes up dramatically) is so, so badly maintained sometimes, there were also tons of garbages in front and sometime even suiage water was drained to the street, cars honking from 7 am in the morning on weekend ( I always wonder why they don't just CALL to pick people up)---last year we even had drug addicts and prostitutes hung around in front of our apartment late late night (we founds needles and condorm wraps in the morning)---last night I was woken up by some latinos (woman and men) arguing really loudly at 4:30 am on the street, which really scared me. The area is certainly not gentrified enough yet, so that the rents are probably a bit cheeper as well. In general, I would not think you'd find any problem unless you go walk around really really late at night. -

There is also issue is the multi-family, mid-block on 16th btwn 4th/5th Aves. Similar problems as above (we have a good friend across the street in a 2 family home), but it has been sold, so my guess, with the current market, it will be reno'd, prices will increase (good and bad), but some of the more problematic residents (and I mean their habits, not race) will be moving along.

My hope is the area keeps it's ethnic diversity, but not at the expense of quality of life issues.
FYI, the municipal parking lot on 5th Ave/16th St's project is about to begin. 575 5th Ave will be a supportive housing project run by the Fifth Avenue Committee. Good use of the space and good for the community. -
The R train sucks.

I agree that R train sucks, but no worse than other trains---local trains, I mean. -
I just moved out of this area about a year ago to more center slope but I miss it...it seems there's some new place opening every day.
But- one thing to consider:

Then again, I think his is rent stab. so it can only go up if there are major renovations, right? -
That area has gone to crap with all of the new construction. The Vue sucks, Suite 16 who are they kidding, the Modern Townhouse - what the heck were they thinking with that crap, Various Scarano mezzanine buildings, 505 5th - what??? that much ? Various other fedders specials and giant holes just waiting to be filled. And soon to have its own shelter.
That entire area is the fringe that the realtors are referring to, and is bound for a big fall.
Just look at all the price cuts.
When it falls it will take all the business with it. Stay away..... far far away -

Wow, thanks for being so positive!

Especially for all the long time residents who have lived through all the "new construction" and are finally able to take a deep breath again...albeit not over yet.
It was a great area of the South Slope and will be again once the housing boom bombs and the construction stops.
And if you are referring to 575 5th Ave as a "shelter" it's not. Supportive housing for teens aging out of foster care, women and the elderly will be the focus. Don't spread rumors that are not true.
Howdy, Stranger!
