Garden Cafe, seconded. The decor isn't high-concept or sophisticated in a Manhattan-y kind of way but it's very private, the service is good, and the food is very tasty!

I have to agree with nybt - I love when my husband creates these romantic surprises for me.

Not only that, but they are sometimes closed on strange days of the week or for long vacations. So you should make a reservation partly just to make sure the restaurant will be open on the day you want. -

Agreed 100% on both counts.
For a romantic evening at Convivium, though, make sure you ask for a table downstairs in the wine cellar when you make your reservation. The upstairs is way noisy. -

Scottadito on Union between 6th and 7th, but that is WAY crossing that forbidden line you set.

Convivium, for sure. But would it be geographically untoward to suggest al di la, or Stone Park Cafe?
-
Al di la is excellent but they don't take reservations, which I think is risky for a romantic evening (waiting outside is never fun). Brooklyn Fish Camp and Tempo (formerly Cucina) are excellent too.

Love Garden Cafe. Is Brooklyn Fish Camp any good?

I really like it (though the Manhattan mothership, Mary's Fish Camp, has better atmosphere). Go for any grilled fish and the bouillabaisse. The sundae is very satisfying too. -

I was there a couple of years ago and finally went back this weekend. It was really great. One "small" problem for me was that the menu is heavily toward the meat and game side. Luckily they had a very nice seafood stew, or else I would have been out of luck, for the most part. -
If it's nice enough to eat outside, Gen has a very nice cozy garden. I'd also suggest Rose Water, which is walking distance from PH and wonderful.

I second this place... great food, must pay in cash. -
I haven't tried this place, but I don't plan to. My wife and I went there, but wound up walking out before we were seated due to the staff weird and unfriendly manner.

Most everyone I know loves Brooklyn Fish Camp but I felt very eh about it when I went. I got some sort of spicy/grapefruit shrimp dish (which I didn't like at all) and my friend got the lobster roll which I thought had an ungodly ammount of mayo... but I could just be wacko since its seems to get rave reviews. -
I'd recommend Applewood on 7th Ave & 11th St, in the space of the former Blah Blah Lounge (I think).
Great organic & as-local-as-possible food, nice wine list, not terribly spendy. Get a table by the fireplace and its nice and cozy. Friendly owners, great service every time I've eaten there.
Did I mention the Farrell Oregon Pinot Noir that I love?
