re: speaking of 101.9... (indie rock)

NY is such a huge commercial radio market that the stations here have always been terrible, at least in terms of pop/rock music. There's just too much money involved, and the result is the epitome of corporate clearchannel crap. One exception is Vin Scelsa's show Idiot's Delight, which has migrated around from LIR to KTU to NEW over the years.I think the show is currently on FUV, but I couldn't tell you what slot it's on in. When I was younger, WLIR/WDRE/WLIR/WDRE (they kept changing back and forth) were ok. Fordham's station WFUV is pretty good. There's some decent jazz on the air (and I'm NOT talking about 101.9- that crap isn't jazz). Check out 88 WBGO if that's your thing. Otherwise stick to the iPod.

I used to love hearing the AAAHWUUAHHHHhhhhh....! screamer lead-in to the week's top song (be it shriekback nemesis or whatever...).
But these days, no one moves a muscle as the dead songs drone.

Here's the wiki on WLIR/WDRE for those who haven't been here long enough to remember it:

WFMU on 91.1 is (IMHO) the only local "rock" station worth listening to. It is not, however, one of those stations that you will probably listen to all day; they have some DJs who have, shall we say, VERY eclectic tastes. Best bet is to go their web site (wfmu.org) and sift through the archives section to see which time slots are most appealing to you. Of course, if you are always near a computer, you could use the web archives exclusively for your listening pleasure rather than depending on the somewhat difficult to get over-the-air signal. Their freeform format is also available for live streaming either on your computer or via the iPhone. For the iPhone they provide two speeds, one for wireless networks and one of lesser sound quality for when you're using the notoriously slow AT&T Edge network).
