Place to donate clothes in Crown Heights? — Brooklynian

Place to donate clothes in Crown Heights?

i am doing some "Spring" cleaning and have a bunch of adult/children's clothes to donate. I missed the date to donate them to the family who's house burned down. Does anybody knows of a place/organization that takes donations? I know of places in other parts of Brooklyn, but would rather stay local.

thanks

  • Not in CH, but there's clothing and textile recycling at Grand Army Plaza on Saturdays until March 29:

And the Goodwill at 1100 Fulton between Franklin and Classon is nice, and I know they're open on Sundays.

Their hours don't seem to be on that web site, but their phone is listed as (718) 789-0856.
  • there are clothing drop-off boxes outside the bodega at prospect and classon as well.
  • Crown Height Unites Coalition has been collecting clothes for fire victims in the neighborhood. Here is the email address [email protected]
  • thanks for the tips. I ended up dropping the clothes off at Grand Army Plaza. FYI the drop off location is a Goodwill van stationed at the beginning of the road inside the park. The guy was very nice and helpful.
  • prospect and rogers....two drop off boxes
  • Also, for those of you with a car, Concord Baptist Church on Marcy and Putnam has a clothing exchange store across from the church. Parishioners and neighborhood residents can come and select from gently used clothing.

Each Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning church members volunteer their time to reach out to those in need in our community. In addition to offering clothing, soon the Clothing Exchange will be offering referrals for social services and local health services!

The Concord Clothing Exchange has served thousands of community residents over the years and is always in need of donations. If you would like to volunteer at the Clothing Exchange or donate new or gently worn, clean and wearable clothing to the Clothing Exchange, please call (718) 622-1818.
  • a while back somebody told me that those drop-off boxes where some kind of scam. I think that they were run by a for-profit organization. I can't remember the exact details, but it didn't seem very charitable to me. I might be wrong though. Does anybody know anything about them?
  • Here's an article from USA Today.

I also seem to recall a story that the local corner boxes were a for-profit company that sold clothes by the ton in third world countries.
  • That's actually part of the reason why vintage clothing, particularly from the 70s, has gotten so expensive. I used to buy vintage clothing for cheap when I was in college, but much of it is too expensive now. Unless I happen to luck out at the local Salvation Army.

Why sell them for cheap here when the Japanese will pay top dollar for it? The foreign market for secondhand clothing is HUGE.
