Sette: Valentines Day Disaster
I need to rant. My girlfriend and I have just returned from our Valentines dinner at Sette. I haven't been there in years, and I had been hearing such good things, I decided to give it a try, with a $50 prix fixe, it seemed reasonable enough. We arrived on time, and were seated immediately. Our table was a little wobbly, and was promptly straightened by our sever. Well done. Included in the Prix Fixe was three courses, with a Prosecco toast. The waiter kindly asked us whether we would prefer the toast immediately, or after the meal, and we said we'd prefer it after dinner. Two minutes later, our prosecco arrived for a toast. We shrugged and figured on a busy night, we'd let it slide, no big deal. For the first course, I had a completely tasteless salad with gigantic uncut swatches of lettuce. There was some sort of liquid "goat cheese" swirled on the lettuce that was equally tasteless, and there were mandarin oranges that weren't even sweet. (Mandarin oranges with no taste? How do you manage that?") But, to be honest, on Valentines day, it's an appetizer, and I wasn't expecting much. I let it slide. It was after the first course we realized that we hadn't received the bread, olive oil or olives that many (not all) of the other guests received. We asked, for them, and got some bread. No oil, no olives. The bread was cold cardboard. for the main course I had the tiniest, toughest burnt rack of lamb I have ever seen. My girlfriend had a fruitta di mare with a watery, peppery sauce that was otherwise without flavor, and garnished with a half-disassembled lobster carcass. They were awful. Finally, a dessert course was included in the prix fixe: Profiteroles. We figured, at least you can't mess up profiteroles. In fact, I don't think I've ever had a bad profiterole. Until tonight. Instead of ice cream, or even cream, they were filled with some kind of cloy lemon gelatin. We could barely get them down, but we were both starving, since all of the portions were miniscule. I don't even want to tell you what the total was after we begged for the check (tip automatically included) for 20 minutes, with no offer of coffee. Whe I left I felt like I'd been robbed. Now I know it is valentines day, and no matter where you go, you will be getting mass produced, prix fixe food, with gun-for-hire service, but this was one of the worst meals I have ever had. Please tell me this is not a typical experience at Sette.

Did you tell them? If not, you should forward them this description since they are the ones who most need to know.

Yes for sure let them know!
Just as an aside we had our Valentine's dinner at Yayo on 9th between 45th and 6th ave. To be honest it had nothing to do with holiday.. we were too lazy to cook. We had 2 bowls of chicken soup and a lobster that we split (small guy 1 1/2 pounds for $22). We had a drink or two at home before and after and with a nice tip the bill was $40. -
sadly i'm not surprised... the last two times we went there the service was abominable (the waiter spent half the time giggling with her friend who was seated in the restaurant despite the fact that it was a full night). when they said the specials they never mentioned the price. we ordered a simple enough pasta which ended up costing us $24! of course we didn't realize such until the bill came. the food was lousy and certainly no where near worth the high prices (al di la yes, sette no) and after the first bad experience we gave it a couple of months... but then after the second bad experience we truly left there thinking 'that was TERRIBLE!'
in fact it was SO terrible we ended up talking about it for the next three or four nights thereafter... we just couldn't wash that nasty taste/image/experience out of our skins... THAT's how bad it was.
which is a big shame as it's close, COULD be delicious... but it's just terrible and immensely disappointing.
and i say this as someone who so wants it to be a great quasi fancy uber delicious italian place in the slope... there ARE tons of restaurants we frequent near weekly but Sette is one we shall never set foot in or waste unwarranted amounts of undeserved dollars or time at again.
che peccato! -
I'm not surprised for two reasons:
First, Valentine Day dining disasters are commonplace - it's a day renowned for poor performance.
Secondly, I have not been to Sette since uber-chef Amanda Freitag jumped ship over 18 months ago - since then Sette has gone consistently downhill - their goal is to simply compete with Soto Voce for the cheapest lunch on the block.
Great Italian restaurants in Park Slope are located on 5th Avenue alone. -
I avoid eating out two nights a year - New Year's Eve and Valentine Day. Both are notorious for bad service and bad food. Too many meals to push out in too short a time. I suggest going back on a less hectic night and make your judgments about the restaurant on that night, not on a Valentine meal.

A good, well managed restaurant is able to handle it. I took my sweetie to 12th St Bar & Grill and they were packed, but everything went smoothly. The quality of the service and the food were as good as, if not better than, non-holiday evenings when I've eaten there. They had their full menu in addition to specials, but from drinks, to appetizers, to entree and even dessert, service was timely, attentive and professional and the food was great.
Mediocre places probably do implode on busy nights but well run restaurants can usually take it in stride. -
Are you sure you weren't at Scottadito Osteria Toscana?
I hate prixe fixes. I don't need skilled chef whoever deciding what I would like to eat when with what. Sometimes I ask, "why did I pay more to help a restaurant get rid of its leftovers?"
Your experience reminds me of my last time at Scottadito Osteria Toscana. -
Subject: customer feedback
Well, I emailed Sette the text from my post, and haven't heard anything back. As far as Scottadito, I haven't been once even though I live right down the street, because I hear the same thing from everyone; It just isn't worth it. I've been trying as many new restaurants as possible lately. Other than Palo Santo, Convivum and Al Di La (All Fantastic meals, service and experience) I've been striking out left and right. Terrible experience at Miriam, Long Tan was bland. What's the skinny on that new Cajun place on seventh? -

Long Tan is bland. I don't understand the hype over that place. They serve kangaroo. Big deal. -

Another one for Gordon Ramsay. http://www.fox.com/kitchennightmares/ -
Just be happy you didn't go to Applewood. $325 for their Valentine's menu...small portions, slow service...I am a sucker. It was good but not amazing and certainly not worth $200 much less the final bill. Never again. I'll just stick to their brunch.

Holy cow! Are you sure you didn't leave out a decimal point here?
Or are you a polygamist and were out with your 6 wives?! -
The $325 was with tip and a wine pairing for each course...still- too much for what it was.

I was impressed by the Moroccan place Babouche on 5th and Lincoln. Had the fish tagine and we also tried one of their specialties, the pistilla. Delish.

Babouche is excellent. I didn't go there for V-day, but I have never had a bad meal there. I can only say that about Blue Ribbon, Stone Park Cafe, and Al di la.
Howdy, Stranger!
