Hollywood Video on 5th Ave at 8th street CLOSED

That long, flat building that houses Hollywood and Jennifer Convertibles has always puzzled me. Why so flat? I had the impression that there had been a fire in the original building(s), but what a waste of real estate to put such a squat, ugly building there.
Of course, I shouldn't complain. Soon enough, there may be some oversized, looming Albert Speer-like monstrosity there. :? -
There was a fire years ago when a bagel store occupied the space. The owner decided not to rent to any food purveyors after that. The building is owned by the same person that owns Save on 5th. He is a crafty business man. If you noticed the way the space is being re-rented is through a BID process. Highest bidder takes the space.
Till right here I am stating fact but my guess is he is waiting to sell the building to someone who will demolish this one story goldmine and erect luxury condos. -
here is the story on why the hollywood video store is closing:

Ok now I understand the Bid process and I guess I can't blame the owner of the property!

Hey I am a member but only went there ocassionally. Belonging to Netflicks takes care of my movie needs. I have 3 movies in rotation and now there are about 7,000 movies that are streamed from netflicks direct to you. No limit on how many films you can watch that way. the quality is not as good as a dvd but it is not terrible. I guess the days of video stores are over. It is a new world. -

The only institution I hate more than Blockbuster is the USPS, so I have given up on Netflix. I had forgotten about the streaming option though - I should check that out! -
I am not surprised-video stores are a dieing breed-I am shocked there are any left.

Bah. I am totally irritated that I can't watch streams on my Mac. I seriously want to tell Netflix where to put it and join Blockbuster.

Really? I'm on a Mac too...at least there's ITunes Music Store. Hopefully the selection there will get better soon because now it's pretty dismal.
