Hideous new eyesore on 9th St
As I walked to the train today, I saw workers putting up the honkin' hugest, eyeball-searing ugliest McDonald's awning. It stretched all the way from the store to the curb. I can't believe something that imposing is even allowed.
Goodbye to those beautiful sunset vistas down 9th St. And what an annoyance for Piero, who's trying to start a great new place in the old Spirito space -- this awning dominates the whole strip visually.
(Yes, I know Duffy funeral home has an awning, but theirs is downhill, out of the sight lines, tasteful, and frankly, necessary for funerals held in inclement weather.)

They put one up at the McDonalds on 4th Ave and 1st Street too a while ago -- it's horrible. Not that 4th Ave is the most gorgeous locale to begin with, but sheesh! It's mindblowingly ugly.

"The most beautiful thing in Tokyo is McDonald's. The most beautiful thing in Stockholm is McDonald's. Peking and Moscow don't have anything beautiful yet."

I so agree that the awning is just aweful.. The duffy awning never bothers me.. it is a funeral parlour and is pretty understated. That one serves a purpose for shelter when people come to wakes or funerals and it is raining or snowing. The Mc Donald's one is just an eye sore.

Hideous. Until the awning went up I was thinking kudos to mcD's for the 9th St makeover. The awning is g-d awful and an eyesore. F@#$&K them.

yes.. Without the awning the new front was not so terrible. Yellow isn't my favorite color but at least the store receeded. -

I'm sure it will look even more beautiful after 6 months or so of being blasted with air pollution. Then it will upgrade from French's mustard yellow to dijon.

You know . . . Park Slope Neighbors had a pretty successful campaign that got Commerce Bank to scale back their suburban look. The Commerce issue had more safety concerns attached (a drive thru crossing the sidewalk in a heavy traffiked 5th Ave) but there was an aesthetic thing going on too.
Maybe if a few of the people nearby and concerned want to try to do something, they'd have advice. http://www.parkslopeneighbors.org/
Not that I'd expect much since it's McD's, but you never know.
It's possible that the zoning wouldn't permit it, or the Community Board or local council person (is it DiBlasio over there?) could do something... -

Idiot. America is spelled with a capital A.
you hate america
It's worth noting that the McDonalds originally got into the neighborhood by replacing a XXX theater. I still wonder what is better, a sleazy movie venue or a heart disease causing phenomena.
It's always sad to see the poor walk into this place ...

I would take some porn over the glaring yellow arches any day. I walked by late last night and even though the moon was eclipsed, the friggen arches were shining brightly. Supersize my vomitous reaction.

Perhaps, you meant: "petard?" -
It is truly horrifying. Perhaps they want to stand out on Google satellite maps (who knows, maybe it says MCDONALDS on the top).

Does anyone know a broker who can hook me up with an apartment at 9th Street and 5th Avenue? I'm dying to live between Dunkin' Donuts and Mc Donalds.

Before McDonalds opened in that location The Avon which was a adult movie house was in that space.
When the community found out McDonalds was opening ,they picketed to no avail to stop the opening.
Where else but in Park Slope would a neighborhood prefer Porno over Ronald McDonald -

How did I miss the protests? When did they happen?
Isn't there already a Mc Donald's on 4th Avenue between 9th and 1st streets, closer to the Gowanus, where it belongs? -
The McDonalds is at 1st Street and 4th Avenue.

Must be something wrong with me-but, I don't see the big deal about the awning.

Man, MacDonalds is the devil. Seriously. We should do like the French and firebomb every MacDonalds we see. Flame-broil 'em . . . .
Howdy, Stranger!
