555 becomes 545 -- what the hell?!?
so i left my apartment at 555 prospect this afternoon, and when i came home tonight, it had become 545. (it's a miracle i found my way.)
supposedly, the city made the owners change the address. does that sound likely? could this be a clever way of dodging violations on the building or something?
anyone know what city office (or whatever) i can call to find out?

that's wins the prize for the oddest thing about brooklyn i've read all week! good luck straightening it out, Sweets!
-
thanks -- naturally, this comes while my new driver's license is in the mail -- i'm just DYING to go back to the DMV for a change of address.
-
That does seem a little shady. My grandparent's house (in Queens) was purchased by someone who decided to knock it down and build a McMansion. First thing they did was change the address.
On a positive note, you can change your drivers license address by mail...although they charge you $15 if you want them to actually send an updated version of the license.

I live in the building that is now "545" as well. I called the number that they listed on the flyer and they didn't even have a good explanation as to why this is happening. The guy said that they assumed that it had something to do with the construction on St. Marks. Why would the construction on St. Marks have anything to do with our building number? I imagine that Alma is up to something. They said that the mail carriers would still deliver our mail even if it says "555" and that we wouldn't have to make a change for several months. So incredibly annoying ...

Super Enis says that he's called UPS, USPS, FedEx, et al., to tell them about the change, but he still thinks we should change our info with companies -- he's changing his.
enis said something about it having to do with our having the same address as the old hospital did, but, while i don't think he was intentionally lying or anything, i'm not so convinced by that explanation.
the gf tried calling various city offices yesterday and had no luck. i was hoping someone on this board might know which office is the right one to keep calling. -
311 usually can point you in the right direction. But you probably already tried that...
That is SO weird though- and without warning! -
the DOB (and/or Dept of City Planning ) show six buildings on the TAX LOT #1 which was the hospital. They are in the process of subdividing into multiple lots
However, the current breakdown shows "545" as a vacant lot

it is because there is too much bad publicity on the internet that is screwing alma, too much info about 555 and so on
changing the adress is like starting over with a clean spade
too many people upset with alma and the management people in 488 office -

Almighty mods locked the discussion of it and directed here, I suppose it is probably related, a resident of 551 started a thread on the PH board about them getting bumped to 523. Which makes sense. I hate walking down streets in Manhattan looking for an address where they have done this and the addresses are no longer in order, it's annoying.
So to recap:
555 -> 545
551 -> 523
Any other "movers" ? -

It's not to complicate things. Guests aren't logged as unique users. To allow them to edit their posts would enable any guest to edit another's post. Surely you don't think that's a good idea... -

Totally tongue-in-cheek goofing around. But now that you mention it, that could certainly have some comedic effect!

This is slightly off-topic, but I noticed that on Nostrand, one side of the street has numbers that don't relate to the other side of the street. (Ex: on a block where the right side is in the 750's to 760's, the left side is in the 780's to 790's.)
I wonder if that renumbering happened there on a massive scale some time before.
Watch out, Sweet Tea. Someday you'll be living at 547.33 Prospect Place.

it's worse on washington. there are 800s on one side of the block and 700s on the other. I've had many a car driver yell at me for not being outside my building ... when I am.

fyi, hospitalers: we heard back from marty markowitz's office, and apparently this is legit. the city made the addresses change (something to do with officially dividing the properties), not the LL.
-
I live at 699 Classon ( around the block from Jewish Hospital buildings) which is also owned by Alma. I came home late last night with no notice of anything strange and then this evening when I came home, I noticed the address changed to 713. Are you sure this is legit because a neighbor of mine went to other buildings on the block and NOBODY knows of changing addresses. How can they do this so abruptly and still have this be legal?
-
my understanding from the borough prez office is that this is NOT something that alma initiated. (i'm pretty suspicious of them too -- that's why we were calling around.)
-
Clearly Marty is handing out permission to change street numbers like those Brooklyn pins he's always passing around...

I'm not convinced. I still think it's an insidious plot to get around the COO issue.

I'm in what is now 545 as well. Me thinks it's some kind of tax thing
While I'm here I might as well get on my Alma soapbox
When I moved into 475 St Marks I was told many things would be in place... laundry, supposedly a gym, a rooftop farmer's market
What I got was cool neighbors, a nice super and a killer view. Also, no mice
My place at 545 is much bigger than my old place but for whatever reason, *names withheld* at the realty office doesn't accept packages for 545, only 475, for no good reason whatsoever. And there are always errors + mistakes on our rent bills. What the hell??????
Alma's properties are cool but between the unscrupulous brokers and the mismanaged bldg management, argh... aggravation. They are lucky I only have to deal with them ~once a month -
The 555 Laundry hook is reaching urban legend proportions. :?

really? that's so weird about the packages and management office. i agree that living at 475 has been a pretty smooth, enjoyable time...ever since i got over the initial lying on management's part, it's been great.
