TWC: any other option for phone/internet/cable? — Brooklynian

TWC: any other option for phone/internet/cable?

Is there any other option in Park slope for phone/internet/cable? I loathe them (which seems to be a common sentiment), but can't seem to find another viable option for a combo of these 3 services.

Ug.

    Here are the cold facts.
In Park Slope, Time Warner is the only company that offers cable tv/ cable phone/ cable internet through standard copper cable. They have exclusivity to TV services due to city franchising laws.
Verizon offers wire phone/DSL internet only through their twisted-pair copper wire system. Their third marketing leg for TV as for now is as a reseller of DirecTV satellite hardware and contracts.
Verizon will soon offer all three services in their "FiOS" package once they get a cable tv franchise from the city and when Verizon rewires the entire city with fiber optic lines. This could happen by 2010 or later.
There are other companies [Earthlink, etc] that provide internet services using either the TW or Verizon wiring systems.
  • by getting Verizon POTS, DSL and Verizon Wireless I'm getting something close to $20 in discounts so POTS is around $43 with all the taxes, DSL around $32 and about $9 off my Verizon Wireless bill over and above the discounts I already get (19% SUNY employee discount)
  • Verizon have plans to install Fios in Multiple Dwelling Units throughout Brooklyn. Unfortunately, MDUs do not include brownstone buildings, so Park Slope may be SOL for the time being. However, Fios is already avaliable in some buildings in Williamsburg, Downtown Brooklyn and Dumbo.

I'm opening an office in Dumbo next month, so I'll be making a noise about Fios once I'm there :)

FiOS is just phone/internet now in select parts of Brooklyn. Can't do cable tv just yet, as stated above. Soon.
