Anyone been to 95 South? — Brooklynian

Anyone been to 95 South?

I was walking on the other side of Franklin (the north side of the Parkway) and came across 95 South. Went inside, big half moon bar, dark wood, big TV's (not that in-yo-face TV), and met the manager/owner. He gave me a take-out menu and said they were adding 4 more dishes soon. Asked him how long they'd been opened and he said December as if I'd been living under a rock ("no, just on the other side of the PW!").
Questions are as follows: have you been there at night? What's the crowd? How's the food?

I was there early in the evening so there weren't that many people there- and no one eating. Not that that means anything.

Also, further up, between St. Johns and something, there's a soul cafe opening soon. Menu sounds interesting and sign says they're opening in a couple of weeks. Forget the name.

  • 95 South looks a little intimidating. But I sure could go for some good BBQ. I was supposed to go to their grand opening party but I was ascared.
  • Awww, and you call yourself Cool??? I'm just kidding! Carni/Alafair/Mamcita- I smell a bar crawl----I guess we'll wait for the weather to warm up though.

Oh, and Cool? I'll hit 95 South with you if you want. Don't worry, I'll protect you!

As for BBQ- those letters make me nervous and super skeptical in these parts. I could pretty much guarantee that it would be a let down. Unless they have a smoker in the back....and I doubt they do.

Also- Roomie pointed out on the menu that he really wants to try the, get this: "CANDID Yams"......

Now everybody! "HOW CANDID ARE THEY???"

Just. Awesome. I can't wait to get stinkin' drunk there.

    mac & cheese A+
    catfish A
    fried shrimp B

decent red wine by the glass

    been a couple of times
    it's consistent
  • what are the prices like?

i walked by the other day and saw no menu posted, and (genius that i am) i didn't think to ask if they had one i could take.

and do you happen to remember what kind of "decent" the wine by the glass was? decent like yellow tail or decent like franzia? (not a big deal for me, but i'll have an easier time talking the gf into it if the wine is good.)
  • cool, what do you mean by "intimidating"?
  • prices good:
broiled catfish dinner w/baked potato & stringbeans was around 10 bucks
side of mac was 3 or 4
app serving of fried shrimp: nice and large, i guess 6 was 8 bucks

wine: decent like yellowtail i guess
i like my red wine and this was fine, i don't remember how much

rumor has it they do a good burger
  • Subject: nice atmosphere

i went one night when they had this jazz band, the prices are a bit high i thin for the neighborhood but it was cool
  • sounds great -- we'll have to check it out.

    thanks.
  • yeah, a bar crawl is totally necessary. between 95south, the new wine bar opening up, and a few other places that already exist in CH, I think we'd do well. fun.
  • My roommates and I went to 95 South to watch the Super Bowl (no tv at home). The atmosphere that night was great, but they were charging 5 dollars a piece for bottles of Bud. I hope that was due to the game and not the everyday price.
I do really want to try their wings; they looked great. Anyone have the yet???

Oh, riiiiigggghhtt. I remember this post. When it drifted to racial/social issues, I tuned out. I just want the facts, Jack.
  • they do do an excellent burger for $10. very glad to have a place for a burger and a beer on franklin... finally!
  • I went there for the first time on Saturday and had a good time. The bar maids were very attentive and the owners/managers were very welcoming. I had the spare ribs, candied yams and fries and was satisfied. After eating and having two, or three or four cognacs, I was good to go LOL. :)
  • Subject: 95 south how is it?

Can anyone tell us how the music and were anyone dancing? we wanted to try it. and how is the neiborhood? thanks
  • The time I went was basically early for the bar/restaurant. Got there around 5:00 and I left around 8:30. When music began playing it was Old School R&B, the kind of stuff you hear on WBLS or KISS FM. Based on the information that they have in the bar though, it appears that there are special events that occur in the evening after 9:00, which may include dancing. It is approximatley 2 blocks from Eastern Parkway on Franklin Avenue. Years ago, Franklin used to be dangerous but I am not sure about right now. I wasn't uncomfortable and did not see anything that would make me be more alert but that is all based on my perspective.

Franklin is getting better. Usually when I am on it late at night it is empty.

Do they have any vegetarian dishes? I might just not take my gf

Didn't see any strict vegeterian dishes but I am sure you can order up different sides to make a vegeterian dish.

Yes, it does look like Franklin is getting better. I know it is a far cry from what it used to be and it looks like it is turning into the main street for Crown Heighters in the north. The day is coming that I wil not have to leave Crown Heights for anything but work.
  • I just moved here from Florida, but came in January to find an apartment. My cousin's friend threw a party @ 95 South & it was great. Dress code enforced, over 25, multicultural vibe, etc.
In fact Trina will be throwing weekly parties there on Wednesday nights - you can call 646.296.3202 or email [email protected] for info.
  • I'm glad to hear that they're stepping up their game a bit. I went there with a few friends on opening night back in November and wondered how they could even be open. It felt like a glorified dry bar - they weren't accepting credit cards, no draft beer, and no cash register! Supposedly they had a heck of a time getting a liquor license being that the owners all had some trouble with the law in their day, so I wasn't too surprised. The live jazz was decent though, do they still have that going on?

I guess I should give them another shot. March Madness is definitely as good a reason as any.
  • went there last night - looked like they were having a b-day party. after approx 15 minute wait for the barkeep to notice us, we left when she addressed the guy standing behind me and totally ignored us (plus, I was kinda tired of seeing her nipples). we complained to management and plan to go back but was kinda fuckin' lame to wait 15 minutes and then get ignored. blah.
  • that's too bad -- we tried to go there for dinner and a drink the other night, and while it wasn't crowded and the man i took to be the manager was friendly, the music was SO FREAKING LOUD that we didn't stay. (we only talked to him bc it looked not so good, i thought, to be the two white women who walk in, take one look around, and walk right out. we just wanted to be clear the it was a volume thing, nothing else.)

this was a wednesday night, btw. no one was dancing, and it not a party of any kind.
  • I had the same problem the one and only time I've went there. I walk inside... no one acknowledges me... for like 10 mins. My roommate walks up to the bartender and asks how does seating work. He gives her a nasty look and is like... "sit wherever you want"....

that just turned me off... and we just walked out.

Learn some customer service skills.... I seriously will NEVER eat there.
  • blah. this is all too bad. I hate it when new businesses start out on the completely wrong foot. it's really hard to be supportive when you can't get served and can't hear yourself think.
  • Well, it probably doesn't look like the wrong foot to the owners. Heck, they seem to be doing well....it's just that they seem to be focusing on a different demographic.

You know, I'm sure that the owners/manager have a "everybody's welcome" attitude on the outside, but when you get dissed from the bartender, that can sometimes be a very clear message of "you're not welcome here," and that I believe comes from the top down.
  • While I do find it a bit loud I've never had a problem with service. I'm usually there on the early side (before 8) and always get served quickly and offered a menu. The staff is polite if not super friendly and I'm offered refills in a timely manner. I guess it pays to be early!
  • we were there around 9 or 9:30. that's ... pretty early for a bar.
  • This wasn't about the place being too busy to get service. This is about getting completely ignored by the staff. And that's not cool, whatever time it is.
  • Subject: 95 South Wednesdays

For the record, Wednesday night at 95 South is off the hook. They have ladies night every week with a DJ playing all kinds of music. They crowd is a mature crowd and the Hostess are very friendly and welcoming. There names are Trina & Pam. you can ask for them if you like. The food is good and the drinks are awesome. They offer drink specials during the night in which its announce by DJ. Come and check them out on any Wednesday. If you would like to celebrate your birthday you can let them know and they would set you up lovely... [email protected]
  • Just went on Friday and thought it was OK. I'm not sure if I would go again, mainly because the price and atmosphere did not rival Sepia, which is closer (well, I guess Ripple is closest). Liked the neighborhood-y vibe. Did like the bartender quite a bit but don't know her name...although my friend was convinced that as we were leaving she was making fun of us to her friends. Not sure what it would be about, though.

Anyway, sat at the bar, at 9pm Friday there weren't many customers. Had no issues getting served for the first drink, and while I just had a vodka tonic, my friend asked her to create something summery and she delivered!

But as my friend tried to order food, 2 times the bartender turned away to talk to someone else (work-related, though) while my friend was speaking, and didn't come back for a while each time. I think she was friends with some people at the other end of the bar, so she'd get distracted with other work stuff, then go talk to them until she remembered us. We just got sides of candied yams and mac & cheese. I thought the yams were a touch too syrupy, but loved the mac. My friend thought the mac tasted day-old. I suppose that doesn't concern me because when I make homemade mac & cheese, I certainly don't finish it all at once and always think it still tastes good later.

Getting the 2nd drink took a while, but she was sweet about it after we finally got them...we made up some martinis that didn't taste good and as soon as she saw our faces she added a touch of juice to help it go down. Well, maybe that's what she was making fun of us about. :)
