utica train stop to troy and park

the last time I took the 4 train to the utica stop and walked to troy & park I was totally confused and at the front of the train, instead of the much more convenient back. now I know to get out there. my plan that time had been to walk on EP to troy and then over on troy. except ... EP was full of young men hanging out and neither the median or the sidewalk by the service road was well lit at all, so I walked over on schenectady (sp), instead. (which has a great fruit/grocery place on that corner - wow!) then I walked west on sterling, which was okay, but really dark and quiet. should I have chosen st. johns, instead? or is that block of sterling quiet for all of the right reasons (good neighborly behavior) and a better choice?

I'll be making this walk around 8 p.m. tonight. I'm just wondering because I don't really know that area of CH at all and usually either take a car there or take the bus on st. johns to troy, so I don't yet have my route down. but now that I work on the east side of manhattan, it's easier just take the 4 all the way there.

yes, I'm weirdly route obsessed.

    Why are you going all the way to Utica when Franklin is closer to you? Is it the exercise factor (I hate walking out of my way, especially in heels) or this market you so fondly recommend?

    What, who isn't obsessed with routes?

    If you walk down Schenectady, a door or two past the fruit and vegetable market is a little Jamaican bakery, Tropical House Baking Co. I gotta say, not since Christie's back in the day have I had a patty with such a moist meaty stuffing and flaky crust. The ginger bread bullas are also formidable. And lots of other little goodies.

    But yeah, that greengrocer has breadfruit, masa, and natural sugar for a dollar a pound.

    Now if you head down Troy instead, there is a Jamaican restaurant on the NE corner of Lincoln that has an oxtail stew with a sauce thick and rich as a slow-cooked mole poblano. AND it's a sit-down place! Chase that with an icy ginger beer. Mmmmm.

    I don't know that block of Sterling, but St. John's does tend to be busier and better lit. It's a bona fide avenue with two way traffic and some businesses. But you know how it goes, even for those of us who are route obsessed, you'll have to play it by ear when you get there. I've never found that particular intersection or the surrounding blocks of EP sketchy, mostly because there tend to be SO many people at that intersection. But then again, large groups of guys can be intimidating...

    hehehe, no no - I'm going to a friend's place on troy and trust me, utica is way closer. I think it's like 10 or 12 blocks from washington to troy. but thanks!

    yeah - it's pretty quiet over there, especially compared to many areas further west.

    The better choice, too me, would be to walk Schenectady to Park Place and then walk over to Troy. Troy Avenue on that side of Eastern Parkway can be a little dicey depending on the time of night. But if you are talking about 8:00 in the evening, it would be okay to walk down Troy also.

    I can't help but think that taking the B67 bus would be safer. It'll drop you off right on St. John's Place and Troy, which is only a couple blocks from where you're going.

    well, to report back, I stopped and got a patty (YUM) and then walked down st. johns place. I remembered that that tricked-out car place is right on troy and that provides an element of legitimate activity that makes an otherwise dark block more settling. so. to those of you who said hello and merely got a nod in return, my mouth was full of patty. to those I said hi to, you are among the post-patty lucky crowd.

    oh. and. is there a fruit stand like the one by the utica train stop further west? like maybe on franklin or something? cause that place rules but is kinda outta my way normally.

    Don't know of any up your way but there are more on Utica Avenue between Eastern Parkway and Empire Blvd. The one on Schenectady is pretty good as that is the one that I use when I get off the train. Come to think of it, there is a pretty good one on Nostrand around St. John's Place, I believe, which is closer to you and in easier walking distance.

    oh cool, thanks. not that I don't like visiting that end of the universe but it really is more like ... that end of the universe for me. I travel to manhattan solely for work but otherwise try to make my life in BK and would prefer to shop locally. :D
