The Phantom Jamaican Restaurant . . .5th btwn Park Pro
On my block there was a sign that went up for a Jamaican Restaurant . . . "coming soon". That sign been there for about 3 years. No restaurant.
Actually I think it (sign) might be gone now.
Not long ago I saw workmen in there refurbing but I still don't know what is going in there. Anybody have any news on that? Any clue what is happening?

There is one thing that we could really use in this neighborhood, some good West Indian food. Sadly, it all appears to have left.

Hell. We need some good Indian Indian food. Amin sucks.
Can Sugarcane cure a West Indian food craving?

Yeah I guess there are no good West Indian restaurants around. There are a few ok Caribbean food places I guess. And Indian food, forget it. Not around here.

For West Indian take out, that candy store place across from the park on 5th Ave (near 4th St) is pretty good . . . tiny kitchen dishing out the roti, etc. It's practically invisible, but I don't think they've actually disappeared.
it's not The Islands, but it's a closer walk.
I don't know what distinction gags2008 is making, but West Indian and Caribbean mean the same thing. -
There are many and subtle variations of West Indian food - Sugarcane is very good and predominantly Trinidadian - as are the owners. If we get a Jamaican restaurant I hope they know how to do jerk - that's their specialty. My Bajan wife prepares her island's specialty - steamed flying fish in gravy with cou-cou (made out of corn meal and okra.)

Since I'm practically in Greenwood Heights, we're talking a reallly long walk, maybe when Spring comes and I take my bike out of hibernation. I usually go down to the Drumming circle on Sundays and get my West Indian on there or almost anywhere on that side of the park where roti abounds.

Ok, this is why we need a cap on gentrification. -

Have you tried Kinara on 5th Ave. between 10th and 11th? Much better than the other Indian options in the neighborhood. And they have this great combo special -- $11.95 gets you an appetizer, entree, and nan. -
