verison dsl

anonymous
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
I live on Sterling between Vanderbilt and Underhill. I was told that Verison dsl is not available in my area. seriously? Does anybody else have this problem? ATT said the same thing. Do I have to get cable to get a high speed internet conection? Is my block like the West Virginia of PROHO?

  • I used to live on Prospect Place 'tween Carlton and Vanderbilt and I had no problem getting Verizon DSL. It's an overrated service, but it was available.

I'd simply recommend earth link dial up. It's half the cost, and I never had any problems with connection or speed, although I mianly use the innerweb at home for activities such as posting on websites about posting on websites.
  • park pl btw vanderbilt and underhill = no dsl. had to get cablevision for hi-speed. it works fine. no complaints. except that it's a couple bucks more. and i had to lose my verizon email address.

you could consider piggybacking off your neighbors (is that legal?). my computer picks up about 3 wireless connections other than the one i pay for.
  • Hm. We're on Prospect btw Vanderbilt & Underhill and I'm on DSL right now... My friend on Sterling tried to get a cable modem but the super of his building woudln't let the guy in to install it lest he discover all the illegal cable hookups!
  • I would definitely give Verizon a call. I called once and they told me it WASNT available and then I called back and spoke with another operator and they said it was. I have Verizon DSL now on Prospect between Vanderbilt and Underhill AND I had it on Park between Carleton and Vanderbilt.

    Good luck!!
  • Thanks for the replies. I think I am going to go the cable route. I plan to get rid of the land line as the only thing I use it for is the internet anyway. If I do that I might even save a couple of bucks a month. I am a bit worried about the installation though. Cablevision said that they would provide me with a splicer....
I don't think I have ever spliced anything in my life.
  • we got verizon dsl no problem @ 3 years ago - then our neighbors upstairs tried to get it and verizon said they didn't service our area...weird!
  • I used to work for Cablevision so when it came time for me to leave and give up my free cable, phone and internet connection I looked into Verizon and it wasn't available where I live either (Prospect bet. Grand and Classon). (This was recently, maybe a month ago). So for whatever reason, it's not available in the entire 'hood. Cablevision should be able to send a professional installer over to splice everything for you unless you are getting a special deal only if you self-install.

Also, keep an eye out for FIOS, which is Verizon's next generation of high-speed internet. It might be a while before it's available here, but will compete aggressively with the cable companies.
  • I live on park place betwn vanderbilt and underhill, and we have verizon dsl. weird that they told you, rita, that it wasnt available on our block.
  • Here is the deal with Verizon and their stubborn refusal to provide DSL for much of Prospect Heights.

DSL, by my understanding, can only run over copper cables ("copper pairs"). The problem is, a lot of the phone boxes in the neighborhood are outfitted with newer fiberoptic cables. And it doesn't matter if there is a phone box full of unused copper pairs nearby your apartment--if the Verizon computer has your apartment down as "served by fiber optic," then you will have to move mountains to convince them to hook you up.

I fought Verizon for 2 months before a sympathetic technician finally hooked me up to the new copper-pair phone box on the corner.

And for what?? The speed of consumer-grade DSL in Prospect Heights is deplorable, despite the fact that we are served by a central office (CO) that is just across Atlantic Avenue. When DSL advertised "we are doubling your speed! hello are we not the greatest ever!!" they neglected to mention that large sections of Prospect Heights would be stuck with speeds in the ~384 kbps range. Period. I said "I don't care - charge whatever you need to charge" and they said that I was at the absolute limit of what their infrastructure would support.

This "FIOS" thing sounds like it may be fiber optic-based, in which case, this problem will go away. Eventually. If you really need high-speed internet here and now, the only decent option, really, is Optimum Online (Cablevision).

Sadly, this has been our experience, too. A few times our connection has slowed to an unbelievable, sub-dialup crawl, and I've called Verizon about it. After they pin the blame our wireless setup (nice try), they have us run a little "speed test" thing, which I guess sends packets of data back and forth to time the transfer. Even at its best, our connection has them scratching their heads--even they can't fathom how lame their service is. I don't mind it so much for general browsing purposes but it would drive me nuts if I were running a business or transferring large amounts of data.
  • I have DSL (live on Underhill bet. Dean and Bergen). We had Optimum Online in our old apartment in Boro Park.
I was told we could not get Optimum Online at the house nor could we get digital cable. Well when we had our cable installed in February 04 it was digitial cable and it works fine. When I call Cablevision now they still say I cannot get digital cable or Optimum Online. Go figure
  • Really? when I do a search on the acquisition site, Optimumonline.com, I get "YES! Optimum Online service is available in all of UNDERHILL AV in ZIP code 11238.*"

That doesn't sound right to me that you can't get it. I thought the digital roll-out was complete in Brooklyn.
  • I too have Optimum Online in 11238. Works great.
  • Im so friggin bummed. I just did like you said Amy and when it asks me what house number on Underhill and I put mine it, it still says unavailable. Thanks for trying for me though.

I am so jealous Jose :)
  • What about TimeWarner or Road Runner, any other company?
  • I'm on Washington at Bergen, and have had Cablevision Optimum Online for at least 2 years or more! It's generally great, but conks out occasionally, sometimes is slow for brief periods. I'm moving to Albany Ave {at Sterling} in Crown Heights soon, and was just offered Verizon DSL there at a really cheap price. Going to stay with OO for the time being. Thanks for all the comments about it here.
  • I used to have Time Warner Roadrunner, and I've had Cablevision Optimum Online since moving to the neighborhood. If you can afford it (and if its available at your building number), a cable hookup is definitely the way to go. I can't believe that your whole block could have OO except your building! They really can't run a line to your building to give you service?
  • guest=me
  • I have to say that if it's a choice between Roadrunner and Optimum Online, and it never is because you either get one or the other {or nothing?} depending on where you live, Roadrunner is way, WAY better.
  • Why do you say that?

I've had both now and I haven't had any noticeable difference in service since switching.
  • For me at least, RR was more consistent, OO cuts out frequently. When it's running well, there's still a little lag {I think} behind RR. Maybe it's just my location. I had RR in Bay Ridge, maybe far less density competing for the connection?
  • I'm on the same block as you - Sterling between Vanderbilt & Underhill and I have Verizon DSL. My next door neighbor was told she couldn't get it. Go figure!
