Laila - closed?
Anyone have the inside track on what is going on with Laila (7th Av, corner 15th St)? Noticed it has not been open for a while...
Not one of my faves, but it is one of the older institutions in that part of the Slope. Cornbread Cafe bit the dust a few years back, unfortunately... I hope Java stays alive!

Yup, the boy and I noticed this place went out of business just a few days ago (less than a week I would say) He's already eyeballing it for his business (because he lives across the st) but I doubt that'll happen. I hope something tasty goes in!

That is one restaurant that should have died a long time ago. WAY overpriced for the food. If they had just come down a couple bucks on their prices.....maybe. I hate to see old time business go and be replaced by overpriced grocery stores but.....sometimes old is just old and crummy.

Hate to disagree WTGirl, but to each their own taste.
Thread on GWH/SSP Board as well.
Locked the posts on the Brooklyn Eats and GWH/SSP boards to link here. -
Aw, haven't been there in a long time but hubby used to really like that place.

i found this out on menupages, when i was hunting for the # for olive vine. that might have been what killed it, because the food across the street was so much better. wondering what we'll get next?

Subject: Laila - closed
I saw Elias, the former owner, a couple of weeks ago. Yes, it's closed - rent increase - same old story. It's going to be (another) Kiku sushi. -

Elias is a great guy. Sob. That used to be a real neighborhood restaurant. -
Great, just what we need...more sushi
Mercury levels on high anyone?
(and I love sushi, don't get me wrong, sea urchin me anyday) -
geez, how much sushi do we actually need down here? gimme something new and exciting.

there is already a Kiku in So Slope just a block or two away! why another one? or is the current one going to close and re-open in the new space? doesn't make sense -

My friend said that Elias owns that building, unless he sold that too.

There seems to be construction going on in here when I walked by yesterday- anyone peeked in to see whats up? If I see people when I walk by next I'll ask...
-
Hopefully not another bank :P
-
dude if it's a citibank.... sorry I'll support that. You know how many bodega atm fees I have?!
-
Hm. When I walked by the other day the door was open and I totally peeked in. They had wood for shelving..... I'm thinking a store of some sort.

According to the peps at grab (which is right next door and shares a wall) its going to be sushi. With Kiku right on the corner? And the other, sit-down Kiku down on 10th or wherever it is?
We'll see. I'm happy to have sitdown sushi across the street from my house, but still...I'd much prefer a nice gourmet vegan place or something more original. -
A sign is up on the plywood saying it is going to be "Ten Japanese cuisine"
Awesome. Do we need another Japanese place? How about a authentic Sichuan Chinese place?
So annoying. Between the Kiku saturation and the Suki sushi, I don't see the need for yet another. -

you may be right about saturation, but just to be clear... sushi is NOT the end all be all of japanese cuisine. we don't actually have a decent japanese restaurant in Park Slope.

How many Kiku Sushi restaurants in Park Slope are there? I go to the one on 5th Avenue near Union Street. I like Kiku. I like sushi. But how much do we need? How many restaurants do we need? Same old same old. I want a karaoke bar and a bowling alley...or a huge dance floor with mad djs and dancers in cages hanging from the ceiling.

I know there is more to Japanese cuisine than sushi. I didn't say another sushi place was opening, I said another Japanese place.
I would just much prefer something other than Japanese at this point. As I mentioned there still isnt a passable Chinese place in the neighborhood. -

you are absolutely right. i'm just saying that there isn't a passable Japanese place in the neighborhood, either.
