Newspaper Thief
As I was leaving my building to walk my dogs I noticed a guy with a dog picking something up near the entrance of my building. My dog saw his from inside and he started barking at them and they quickly walked away but kept looking back. I didn't give it much thought to what he was doing but when I came back I realized that he stole one of my neighbors' Sunday Times. So be on the look out for a white male around 50 with a groomed white beard and a tan dog that looks like it might be Ridgeback/G. Shepard/Pit mix. Also, I noticed them turn down St. John's between Classon and Franklin. Stealing papers is lame but stealing the Sunday Times is grounds for a beat down.

I think he's done for the day. From the description, he doesn't sound like someone who's stealing the Times to resell them, just too cheap to buy his own.

True. Maybe the cheap-ass will strike again next Sunday. Hide you papers! -
why do you suppose he's not reselling them? because he be black?

Um, reread the original post. He wasn't black. -
Ive had my Saturday paper stolen a number of times on St. John's.

If I don't get my Saturday or Sunday paper by 9:00 a.m., I can almost guarantee that it will be stolen (this is on Eastern Parkway). A couple of months ago I saw a kid walking away with my paper and, without thinking, I ran outside in my pajamas and chased him screaming, "that's my paper." Surprisingly, he came back and gave it to me! It's been stolen since then though so I'm not sure how effective I was.

Well, of course he gave it back to you. You caught him! And I don't think the typical newspaper thief is a hard-core perp.
This isn't unique to CH, you know. I've had my paper stolen in every town I've ever lived in. It's why I no longer have a subscription. That and the fact that the last thing I need about the house is extra paper. When I want a paper, I go to the corner store and buy it. -
Ahh yes, the newspaper thieves. That is one thing that I refuse to get delivered to my buidling. That and bottled water. Seems like, if you are not there the minute the paper is thrown, anyone leaving out the building considers it fair garme. For me, it is not people walking down the street that take the paper but the people in the building that don't know who the paper belongs to and don't care.

While I used to have my paper constantly stolen in Fort Greene, I haven't found it to be the same case in PH. To me it's an amazing thing about NYC is how many papers do not get stolen either from home delivery or news boxes.
Howdy, Stranger!
