i've decided that this is simply untrue and now i feel bad for spreading this TOTALLY UNTRUE rumor after a moment of panic....

I just heard a terrible rumor, and I'm hoping it's not true:

The 9th Street R will be closed this summer for renovations for a year and half?

Does anyone know anything about this? Please say it isn't so...

  • You gotta be F-ing me. There's no way in hell I'm running 10 blocks during rush hour to another station.

Metro card prices keep increasing as service decreases. Didn't someone almost sit on human poop on the subway last week?

This renovation rumor better not be true.

Mc Donald's coming to 9th Street was worse enough.
  • i'm REALLY hoping this guy was confusing 9th Street with the Smith & 9th repairs in 2010.

i've searched all over the internets and blogland and can't find ANY info about this, so i'm hoping this guy is just a misinformed ass.
  • That could easily be the death of any new business on 9th St (I'm looking at you, Piero).

  • If that's the project the original poster is referring to, it doesn't make sense for the Ninth Street R station to close; they're not very well going to close Canal Street and DeKalb, too.
  • For the record, this is the Smith & 9th St plan:

    A35994
    REHABILITATE SMITH-9TH STREET STATION (NYCT)
    6TH AVENUE LINE
    $10M - $50M

Provide a new canopy at street level to cover control house setback from building line
Replace sidewalks and roof of escalators and stair enclosure connecting the control house and passageways at the upper intermediate landing
Repair a limited number of columns at street level, supporting walkways; replace upper platform stairway stringers
Replace platform canopy roof panels with metal type panels; repair canopy walls along the entire length of the platforms (interior of station only)

On the surface it looks like this project would be a lot more invasive and inconvenient than the fiber optic-related work at those other stations. I do feel really bad for those whose stop it is. Especially the Red Hook folk that use Smith/9th St regularly.

PS: Isn't it at least mildly disturbing that the projected cost is between $10-$50M? Not $10-$20M or $40-$50M but the possible ceiling is five times as much as the lowest amount. Hmm...
  • On a related topic, does anyone know why there have recently been, at times, as many as 10 city buses lined up on 9th st, in front of Duffy Funeral Home? The destination scroller on the front said something about the F line, I think.
  • 1. I suspect the rumor the original poster heard actually had to do with the real planned closing off the Smith-9th station:

    2. The buses lined up are being used as shuttles during weekend work/shutdowns that have been going on on the F line. Weekends only.

Yeah, right when the MTA raised our subway fares, I hope on the F train to find that it only ran half way to where it was supposed to and then all passengers had to jump out and catch buses to reach their final destinations. Talk about a bunch of crap.
  • give me a break, G and L train patrons have been dealing with shitty service for months (if not years) with NO improvements. 3 weekends with a shuttle bus for the F train is irritating, but hardly a deal breaker
  • a friend of mine told me that along with the smith/9th F station that the 4th Ave station will close too, but didnt say anything about the part of the station serving the R line.
  • did you know that the highest point of elevation in the entire subway system can be found on the stretch of track between carroll and smith/9th?

The F train shuttle bus adventure SUCKED. I got on the F train, had to get off the F train, had to get on a bus, then got on an A train (where I was brought) and then got out in Manhattan and had to take a cab. A trip that usually takes me 40 minutes took almost 2 hours. I could have WALKED from Park Slope to Canal Street in less time.
