<----------In honor of this lovely topic.
hahacute - but that's pretty damn tame compared to these below - and it isn't the actual age of the "model" it's the age they appear to be. I have a 17-yr-old daughter and every week we talk about exploitative images bombarding young women in this country. And these young models "look" younger then her and she looks her age.
i find nothing wrong with those pictures, especially the middle one. and the last one does not show the model's face, so im not sure how you can say she looks too young. and if you're complaining about advertising that exploits young women, well, american apparel is hardly the first do so. like i said before, welcome to america. this isnt the 50s.
I post these at the acknowledged risk of titillating certain viewers....
and all of those pictures are hot. thanks for the post. -
see - I knew I'd enable a 14-yr-old boy

nope, a 23 year old guy who likes attractive young women around the same age. -

probably i'm too "poorly educated" to understand, but i forgot about the part in feminism where i'm supposed to be ashamed of my body and hate sex. and the part where women can't make decisions for themselves. and the part where models are a bigger deal than working conditions. and the part where feminism is monolithic.
.
a week ago, you were posting quotations about how we're so over feminism that supporting a female politician was unnecessary -- even one whose ankles and pantsuits and breasts get frequent media attention.
i've got good lesbian feminist credentials and the fire-eating wand to prove it. please don't condescend to me. -

Getting beyond the fact that these images get you in a tizzy (but kudos on being so internets literate at 83-years-young), I had to laugh at the very faint spray-painted message on the billboard that reads, "Gee, I wonder why women get raped?"

I guess that then qualifies me for being McCain's VP
I give-up on this topic. And just as an fyi - I am a over 50 white male who works for a women's reproductive health and rights organization who will continue to find images like these troubling and offensive, not because of any puritanical genetic makeup, oh, au contraire, but because of how I see the societal impact on young women through continuous misogynous and exploitive treatment of women.
Now back to politics of a different sort... -
hey, I'm all for fighting lousy body image media, but, as others have said, AA is not the first company to exploit women's bodies for cash and certainly won't be thelast. and as I've said, I've got no problems checking out half-naked 18 year old men making out with each other so come on AA - show me some hottttness.
however, if any of those sexual harassment suits actually make it through, I hope those women get every penny coming to them. there's a huge difference between selling products using sex (which, let's be honest, almost every corporation does) and coercing people into having sex. -

And I'm as puzzled as you are, sweet tea, about how I need to be "protected" by some old white guy from things that my rational brain can deal with just fine.

Well, I'm not a feminist nor have I reached thirty five yet, but the youngish 18yo girlie ads do nothing for me, and I find them a bit distasteful. On the flip side, they also do not stop me from shopping there nor am I on a crusade to rid the city of them. *shrug* I don't get the lolita thing. Maybe I'm gay. Bring on the hot boys, I guess.

I can't stand pretty much all advertising for a number of reasons. I hate the AA ads, I think they're vulgar and in poor taste. Every female in the ads I've seen look like they're about 10 seconds from getting banged. The AA ads remind me of those Calvin Klein 70's basement neighborhood perv ads. I am aware that most of the advertising industry uses sex to sell products but I still don't think it's okay. And I feel AA (and some AA supporters) use their labor practices to excuse the ads.
Lest some people think I'm a prude, I enjoy dirty pictures as much as the next person. An ex took a nude pic of me when I was 21, I have no problem showing it to people. That's because I think it's tasteful and I looked pretty damn hot then. One of my favorite girlie pics is of Cynthia Hall, the March 1971 playmate of the month. Personally, I prefer the whole ass in the air, fuck me now poses in my porn, not on huge billboards. -

Abercrombie & Fitch Move into Kiddie Porn Full-Time
By: Frank Williams
COLUMBUS, OH - On the heels of announcing that it will discontinue its sexually explicit quarterly catalog, Clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch has announced plans to convert all 602 stores it operates into "Abercrombie & Fitch Kiddie Porn Palace" stores. This move by the suburban New Albany-based company represents a slight departure from the original company vision that founders David Abercrombie and Ezra Fitch had in 1904.
"The depiction of nude teenagers in recent catalogs was an attempt to reconnect to our roots, " said company CEO Art Fitch, "My grandfather was always an outdoor enthusiast second, but an incestuous perv first." According to Fitch, the company was originally formed as a way for Abercrombie and Fitch to impress their cute cousins. In fact, they impressed them so much that both men eventually moved the company to Utah so that they could each marry multiple cousins. It was there that A&F gained its reputation for quality outdoor products and nude children performing sex acts.
Shoppers at Abercrombie & Fitch stores will see a gradual change in the merchandise and layout of the store starting in mid-February. "Few people will notice the difference at first, " said COO Max Abercrombie, "we'll start off by replacing camping gear with our line of Gangbang Teen DVDs and magazines and then sometime in March, the ladies section will be replaced with thousands of pre-teen hardcore DVDs." According to an Abercrombie & Fitch spokesman, most of the DVDs and videos will come from the private collection of the Board of Directors and some will come from suppliers in Thailand. The spokesman also said that A&F will be trading on the child slave trade exchange by August 2004.

Ah yes, Abercrombie.
They made waves a few years ago when they introduced thongs for girls.
Yeah, you read that right. Children's sizes.
And they had words like "eye candy" and "wink wink" printed on the front.
D'oh.

isn't that worse than AA?
-
i've been thinking about this thread today, and i fear i may have gotten so worked up that i overstated my point. condescension does tend to rile me up, but even so.
i do wish to make clear that i don't particularly like the AA ads. i think i said earlier that i don't like very much advertising, and that's true. the AA ads are not at the top of my list of wretchedness (there's a recent kenneth cole campaign that equates charity with self-indulgence that bugs me more, for instance. plenty of high fashion ads are much more kiddie-porn-ish, but i do agree that that doesn't make AA saintly.
i do find something theatrical and funny about the ads, though. i don't think they're supposed to be a presentation of real life. like porn, i think they're supposed to have an element of fantasy, albeit grody fantasy -- the obvious grodiness is what to me makes them comic. i've never thought of people wearing AA clothes in real life as intending to flaunt their sexual availability -- unlike, say, someone in juicy couture ass-bedazzled sweat pants or any number of "ironic" urban apparel t-shirts.
i think that some of the disdain that is heaped upon AA has quite a bit to do with the groups their clothes are perceived as being popular with.
i also don't think the ad campaign cancels out the anti-sweatshop stuff. i still think fair labor practices -- and while the union busting stuff isn't awesome, it's a far cry nike in vietnam, say -- is a very important women's rights issue in textile work.
oh, and in my recollection, it does take slightly more than 10 seconds to exit a leotard and leggings, so you might need to up your banging ETA on those pictures, caseo.

Ok, where's caaahyoko? We need her to conduct an experiment for us!

I have to confess that I'm one of the least fashionable people I know. I have no idea what's in style at any given moment. I buy most of my clothes on ebay since I know the exact measurements of the stretch jeans and which t-shirts I like. My clothing style is mostly about comfort and how quickly I can get dressed. I haven't seen any of the Abercrombie and Fitch ads, I've only seen the AA ads online and on the back of the Onion. As for who wears AA clothing, I don't have a clue except for people here who said they wear them. But I do think that Dov Charney is one skanky motherfucker. Oh, and sweet tea, you have no idea how fast I can get out of my clothes when I have a good reason.

I think I could get out in 10 seconds
Because both can be pulled in the same direction. Its simple physics, my dear.
However--Its much more complicated if you are insane like me and wear leotard, tights, some sort of crazy shirt or jacket and high waisted skirt all at once. Basically, you have to get undressed to go to the bathroom.
Now try this while at a bar, WITHOUT any clothing touching the nasty-ass bathroom floor. Yes, I am that girl that makes you wait to the point of almost peeing on yourself. -

I guess that's why, for awhile, they made those "bodysuits"/leotards with the snap open crotch. -

Ah wait. For some reason this recalls all the wet, overcrowded ski lodges of my youth.

except the snap closure on the crotch is the most irritating thing ever to refasten! I could never get more than one or two done up and then would end up having to strip anyway to snap the thing back up and then crawl back in.
