No Trash Cans on 3rd Ave — Brooklynian

No Trash Cans on 3rd Ave

3rd ave
edited November -1 in Park Slope
Anyone else notice there are NO trash cans along 3rd Avenue? Yes - there is a lot of trash on 3rd Ave but it doesn't help NOT having trash cans. Any thoughts on how to get some?

  • The same is true of 6th Avenue. I once wrote a letter to Councilman Bill DeBlasio (his name is plasted all over the cans on 7th Avenue) but got no response. Maybe 6th Ave isn't in his jurisdiction.
  • I would recommend contacting Markowitz or the Sanitation Dept.
  • You can request a public litter basket from the dept of sanitation here.

I can't find the story for the life of me, but I remember ny1 doing a bit on this a couple years ago. From what I remember, some of the residents complained/petitioned/bribed someone to get the trash cans removed because they were unsightly. Something like that.
  • well, for what it's worth, i just requested that the sanitation department put litter baskets on 6th avenue (thanks for the link!). the trash buildup is significantly more unsightly (not to mention grosser) than having to look at trash bins.

i know i'm not alone in thinking this. at least one good neighbor tends to place an open garbage bag on her/her fence to encourage pedestrians to dispose of their trash responsibly.
