Never Go to Beacon's Closet!!
Subject: Never Go to Beacon's Closet!!
I couldn't agree any more with all of the negative reviews I've read about Beacon's Closet. I've been in the shop a couple of times prior to my visit today, and I was never impressed by their collection. However, I figured I'd bring over a bunch of great shoes that I no longer wear and several great handbags. The girl who took my name and my two bags had a bit of an attitude with me at first, but I thought nothing of it. She told me to wait for 45 minutes...Well, I hung out in the store, and looked around for a while. I went over to her after 45 minutes and she ignored me for a while, asked me what my name was 3 times and handed me my 2 bags, stating, "We can't use any of this -thanks." Every single item in both bags hadn't been touched. They were placed exactly as I had initially left them. She didn't look at anything at all. I was stunned (maybe I was naive thinking I would be treated equally as any hipster would've been treated). I was really angered by the whole experience...I'll never go back. Afterwards, I discovered that I'm one of many customers whose items for sale have been "turned away." Can anyone relate? I'm thinking about bringing all of my shoes/bags/clothing to a salvation army or something of that nature..._________________

maybe try going to the one in williamsburg? that one's a lot bigger and seems less snooty when it comes to trying to sell them stuff. i've never had to wait more then a few minutes for them to give me a price on the things i bring in.

Yeah, I'll check out the Williamsburg store. I was so put off by my experience at the PS store today.

I don't know why you would go to any of their stores if you were treated that way. -
Yeah, maybe I'm too forgiving. Salvation Army seems like my best bet. I went over to Hoots Couture on Flatbush, but they aren't buying this month. The saleswoman at Hoots was a lot friendlier than Beacon's...

The Wburg store is pretty much the same. However, remember the most important thing--STOOP SALE season is almost here! Sell your stuff and have a good time too!
-
Yes, that's true! I've never had a stoop sale -(I'm relatively new to Bklyn). Do you think it'd be worth trying to sell fall/winter stuff in the spring/summer? I'd definitely want to give it a try!
-
Are you sure they did not look in your bags?
Did you speak with the manager? -
Yes, I am 99% sure they didn't look in my bags. I saw the woman that I gave my bags to place them behind a group of bags that were already on the wire shelf behind the counter. Every item was inside each bag exactly how I left it. I was also in the store waiting/looking around and never noticed anyone behind the counter go through my stuff.

And, no I didn't speak to the manager. I just left. I'm not sure how much good it would've done to speak to the manger if he or she hires a staff with attitude. Who knows...

Stoop sales in PS can be very succesful. Here is what I mean.. If you have a vintage item that listed on e bay will command top dollar don't compare that against the price you will get at a stoop sale. That is comparison of apples and oranges. If you do the research to see what an item is worth and list it on e bay it will not sell unless you have other item listed that are in that category and of similar value. At a stoop sale the pricing is done where what you want to get just get rid of is lower but that "vintage item" is priced higer and the hope is someone wanders by who understands the value of that item (or items and will pay the price you want).
Going back to the OP question. I agree that you were treated rudely with that long wait but bottom line it makes no differencee if the bags had been opened and inspected. A decision was made based on EXTERIOR that it was an item that would not sell from that venue and that is the way these things are valuated when put out to consigment or straight sale to vintage shop. -
It sucks that they made you wait that long- but if you were trying to sell anything other than summer clothes this time of year- I thought they would automatically reject it...I even thought Beacon's (and places like it) specify what season they are buying with posted signs. I'm sure milling around 45 minutes without them glancing at your stuff is still rough.

The following is posted on the Beacon's Closet's website. If you feel that they did not act as they advertise, you should complain formally in writing.

how to sell your stuff
We continue to buy daily, without appointments, during all hours of operation up until a half an hour before closing. during peak selling seasons, however, cut off times may be earlier, particularly at the park slope location. please feel free to give us a call to find out about projected wait times. we will evaluate the items while you wait, or you may drop them off for your convenience. any items that we pass on can be left in the store and will be donated to charity. we will require your GOVERNMENT ISSUED photo i.d. when you are selling items. sorry, no exceptions. this is for tax and documentation purposes only. your information will not be shared with other companies or used for any kind of promotion.
charities
Due to the volume of clothing that we receive, we are always looking for new charities, with not-for-profit documentation, that are able to pick up from us on a regular basis. If you are affiliated with such an organization, please contact us at [email protected]. currently, our donations are picked up by the following organization(s):
dominick's mobile ministry – a not-for-profit mobile service established in 1995, which distributes customer clothing to the needy, homeless, and to churches throughout new york and pennsylvania. items are both given away directly to individuals, and sometimes sold with a request for donations, to pay for this not-for-profit's operational expenses. this clothing is distributed through churches and through the mobile unit. any proceeds which this charity collects go toward fulfilling the mission of its own organization... director, joseph dominick. -
i have also had my clothes turned away (one thing was almost never worn prada and tons FROM beacon's closet i got years ago) but having said that, this store is one of my favorite in park slope. the one in williamsburg rocks though...it's 10 times the size.
was at beacon's yesterday in fact, and bought 3 or 4 things...one of which i think is my new favorite t-shirt.
i learned to just let it go...they pick what they pick for a reason...it's a small store, they know their clientele, etc.
i was also offended at first, especially since a lot of the stuff i had you know...bought FROM them in the first place and now they didn't like it anymore, but the fact remains is that they do have some pretty good finds in there.
yesterday the mens section was really sparse so clearly they do a healthy business.
i now leave my clothes on the stoop. people always take them so it feels good to know they are going to good use.
