Rent increase — Brooklynian

Rent increase

I have lived in a studio in Sheepshead since 6/07 and just got my new lease papers and such. It says there's a $50 increase in my rent (I'm paying $800). That's a 6.25% increase (unless I suck at math).

Is that, I don't know... legal? I could have sworn someone told me it's only supposed to be 1 or 2%.

Thanks.

  • 3% on a one year, five point something on two if you are rent stabalized. There is a website where you can easily check if you are supposed to be, but I can't look it up until Monday. It has for sure been posted on this board, you may be able to find it with a few searches.
  • i went through this last year myself. I called 311 and got the 411 (haha, sorry). Apparently, if a landlord has 8 or less units in their building, they're not bound by any rental increase law (unless it's rent-controlled obviously). THUS, my place – we live on one floor of a 4-story brownstone – one apt / floor), went up 17% last year! Personally I think this is complete bullshit but there's absolutely nothing we can do about it - they can do whatever they want.

I could understand if the 'less than 8 units' places were allowed to be raise up to 8% / year - as opposed to the normal 4%, (double) – but to have NO BOUNDARIES? Highway robbery, and it's just sad.
