EMPTY STORE FRONT ON NORTH 5TH AVE. WHAT BUIS. SHOULD OPEN? — Brooklynian

EMPTY STORE FRONT ON NORTH 5TH AVE. WHAT BUIS. SHOULD OPEN?

landlord

I have a large store front on 5th avenue north. Its about 2000sq feet and would like to rent it out to a buisness that would add to the culture and vibe of the area.

What would you like to see open up on 5th avenue?

  • here we go.....

want - trader joe's or similar store

don't want - another bank, cell phone store
  • I would not rent it to a bank or phone store. No matter what the rent. Even though I doubt a bank would be interested in 2000 sq feet of space (they usualy want alot more then that).

A trader joe's kinda place would be great...thats for the suggestion
  • Trader Joe's, please!

Shoe Repair Service or Gym would be OK.
  • non-shitty indian restaurant
  • how about beard papa?
  • It is easier to say what businesses we don't need... banks and cell phone stores.. than what businesses would be good for the hood. Of course you want the maximum rent the space allows but I appreciate your concern that the store fit in to the needs of the area.

    I would like to see...
    A vintage clothing store
    a used book store
a restaurant that is not too expensive but good
a kid's clothing and toy store
a yarn and crafts store (a * for that one)
  • OK, here's what you need to do.

In the front you need approx 20 old school video games. I'm talking the height of 80's retro. Berzerk, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Dig Dug...you catch my drift.

Now around the sides you need some of those seats from airports that have the plastic tv sets attached. You know the ones where you had to drop a quarter in every 15mins to keep watching? Install like 20 of those suckers and program them with the weirdest stuff from the 70's and 80s. Movies like "Yor, Hunter from the Future" and "Skatetown USA" (really, anything with Linda Blair except the Exorcist and you'd be golden.)

Now right in the center of the place your gonna need one of the old school animatronic bands from Chuck E Cheese. After you install these rocking bears you'll have to hire a hacker to update their tunes. They should only play death metal. Real loud...I mean REAL LOUD. Death metal always add to the ambiance of any place.

K, Now toward the back, here's where it gets tricky. Your gonna need a lot of see thru plastic tubing and a large collection of hamsters. Actually you can prob get by with just 10 hamsters to start, those suckers breed like crazy. Now install the see thru tubes all along the walls in weird zig zag patterns and have them all end at the same place along the wall. After that you can hold hamster races on the weekends for big bucks.

Of course the piece da' resistance for the back end (or however the French spell it) is a old fashioned pit BBQ joint. Talk to the former owners of Biscuit, I bet you can get their stuff cheap. Put that in...and here's the secret...serve real brewed sweet tea. This is the real reason Biscuit closed down, they didn't know that BBQ goes best with sweet tea. You'll also need to have Pittsburgh Hog Legs at the ready for when the Hamster Races get going. Watching hamsters race does make your mouth parched something fierce.

OK, there ya go. The perfect answer to your question. Lemme know when this sucker opens, I'll be there with bells on.
  • recycle-a-bike.
    letterpress.
    public baths.

alternative medicine office --- acupuncture, herbs, massage, etc. --- but NOT a spa.
  • Razen...your the man! What an amzing idea!!! However, you can't have video games anywhere near a school. I think you have to be 10 miles away or something
  • Thank you all for your feedback. It will be seriously considered.
  • Razen....if I only could  . I like the beard papa and non-shity indian rest. idea's. Also vintage clothing and used books. Worst idea so far is public baths (made me laugh though).
  • check out buffalo exchange.

they are a vintage shop with a location in williamsburg and i heard they were looking to expand.

they'd do great on 5th i think. beacon's closet is always packed.

i don't really go there, but i imagine a jamba juice would do well in that area also. especially if you are close to where the new arena will be...
  • How about an indoor play space for children up to the age of 10? other than PowerPlay, we have nothing like that around here.
  • I second the yarn and crafts store, there's nowhere in the neighborhood to get stuff like that in one place. I work in a store on 7th Ave and used to knit so my customers talk to me about crafty stuff. Quite a few people have mentioned they wish there was a crafts store. Something like Michaels or Joanns, I think that would be a great addition to the neighborhood.
  • this craft store just opened on union, right off 7th...

  • all these suggestions are great and it would be wonderful if say a used book store or a good yarn shop opened but realistically how much is this rent going to be for 2000 square feet - $5,000? $8,000? - your gonna have to sell a whole lot of yarn to make that rent, let alone your other expenses... how many of you guys have $50,000 to spare for start up costs to open up your own business? It's so easy when we suggest OTHER people do it.

i would suggest to the owner of this property -look around - businesses are not surviving on these high rents - it would be to your benefit to charge an affordable rent and find a stable invested tenant who is passionate about what they want to open...thats if you really want to improve your neighborhood.
  • A decent record store. As it stands, I always have to trek in to Other Music. It would be nice to be able to stay in the 'hood and shop for music. Just a thought.
  • how far north on 5th?

What is needed on 5th by me is A PHARMACY!

Thanks Landlord for thinking about the community, I really appreciate the sentiment, and the action to listen to the community and focus on businesses good for the community. My family as well takes this approach.

I believe it is not so much a question of what business to allow to rent your space as much as what business not to allow. I guess any large corporate chain is usually more detrimental than small corporate or locally owned businesses. I guess in the end, lets keep Brooklyn Brooklyn.

  • indoor skate park (as in skateboard), for real some real bucks and fun could be had, NYC lacks a good indoor park.

Awesome idea!!! Maybe it could be multipurpose -- add a dance area or a rock-climbing section to make money off of non-skateboarders too.

Flexi's 1980s rollerskating rink rocks too! Keep it adults only though -- with a bar in the center of the rink and roller-skating bartenders.
  • skateboarding would be fun, but.....

.....80s style roller rink (4 wheels only) with wood floors, couples skate, blasting music by the Doors.....

    (showing my age)

    god yes
an Amoeba of the east (it's a huge space, right?)
one that cleverly mixes in some other junk, like Beacon's Closet with the music to clothing/accessories ratio reversed.

on the no no not another, north fifth ave currently has one or two too many spa and high end lotion/cosmetic stores.

but srsly, beg trader's joes to take up your space!

for bookstores, there's that woman who was polling the boards and got a grant/award for small business start up. something like the excellent McNally-Robinson on Prince St in the city.

what's the rent like on your space? Maybe I'm ready to change businesses...

    Thats my plan!

I plan on "keeping Brooklyn, Brooklyn". I am more then willing to take a loss on the rent knowing that the owner is bringing something unique and valued into the area. That is why I posted this question.
  • Flexichic:

    Great Idea!

However, I can't have a roller rink since its only 2000sq feet. Although, I love the idea and wish I had the space for it.

I promise to everyone that I will not bring in a corporation or franchise
  • belzjm, how big is Fiber Notion? I remember seeing the sign but thought the space was too small for them to have a good selection.

landlord, there are too few people like you. Thanks for thinking of the neighborhood!
  • i don't think it's huge, caseopele. i haven't actually been in, just read about it and walk by it all the time.

from the website, they sound as though they have a fair selection, but i'm not a crafter so i wouldn't really be a good judge...
