prescription cat food
My male cat, Buster, got an obstruction from crystals in his urine and he's fine now but the vet wants him on Hill Prescription C/D for the rest of his life. He has a brother so I have to feed them both the same. They love it, which is great, but it's REALLY EXPENSIVE, and they're only 8 and a half years old. The vet, Animal Kind, doesn't deliver and I live in a 4th floor walk up and I'm a middle-aged chubby lazy lazy person. They gave me a prescription in case I find a place that is cheaper and/or delivers but they didn't recommend a place. I live in the south slope. anyone know a pet store that has and will deliver prescription cat food?
Thanks
Thanks

NYC Pets on 7th & 12th delivers, not sure of their delivery area. You can also try Petsmart.com but I think that the prices may be higher than local stores.

You might also want to try a store called Acme Pet on Vanderbilt.
There used to be a pet store in Cobble Hill (on Court Street) called Beastly Bite that used to carry lots of prescription foods and they delivered. Its been a while so i do not know if they are still in business. -
Thanks, these are really helpful, I'll call them all.

Unfortunately local pet stores don't sell prescription cat food. I would recommend looking online for places that will deliver it to you with a prescription from your vet. Here is one place that I found, but I'm sure that there are others.

Beastly Bite is still around, FWIW.

Can't help with your question, but having had a cat with similar issues, I can offer the following. We tried some OTC Urinary Track foods on ours because of the expense of the prescription stuff. I can't remember which one specifically, but I could probably look it up. It was still more expensive than regular food, but way better than the prescription stuff. He did great on that. A few years later, in the chaos of a move and other nonsense we had to switch him to regular food for awhile. He has been back on regular regular food for two years now without any trouble.
*shrug* YMMV. -
Thanks for that. I asked at least three vets at Animal Kind if there were alternatives to the prescription food because it's literally 36 dollars for a case there! The best they could offer me was to ask Hill for a list of ingredients and then compare those to what I could find in the pet store. I find it insane that they don't have this at their fingertips (considering how common an ailment this is for middle-aged male cats), but perhaps the prescription pet food is an important source of income for them. If so, the least they could do is offer delivery.
The online price is much cheaper but I suppose I have to factor in delivery costs, but I still think it's worth it because right now I can't buy more than three cases at a time because that's all I can carry up four flights of stairs. -
This is the one we used that worked well:
Purina ONE® Urinary Tract Health Formula
I'll tell you what, we seriously felt like we were playing Russian Roulette. The vet put serious fear into us about our cat dying if he wasn't on prescription food. We were in such a money crunch though, that it was impossible to sustain the prescription stuff, so we were facing putting the cat to sleep or switching for awhile. After 100% success with the Purina stuff, we switched vets rather than switching back to the prescription food. The switch back to regular food happened due to moving from the west coast to the east coast years later. We had three dogs, three cats, and four kids along with all our worldly possessions and didn't end up having enough of the urinary food and couldn't find it on the road. Once he didn't keel over and die on regular food, well, and the crystals didn't appear either, we just left him on it. He's probably laying on my pillow getting fur all over it right now. Damn cat. He is fifteen now. -
we have a cat with this, too. hope vet told us to give him wet, low-magnesium food (under .003%) plus a pH balancing powder supplement we put on his food every night. (i'd tell you the name, but he's commandeered my lap, so i can't get up.)
because of all that craziness with contaminated food last year and because as soon as we switched the food, the other cat went on hunger strike and developed different health problems, we feed them wellness brand. it doesn't specifically say urinary anything, but this flavor (chicken and herring) is low magnesium. it's more expensive than purina, but less than prescription. acme delivers it.
he's had one problem since the diet change, but we had stopped giving him as much of the powder. we've gone back to the original amount and things seem fine (knock on wood). -
thanks. gosh, so much to ponder.
Now I'm a little afraid to leave the Hill prescription because both my cats ADORE it. I've never see them eat with such gusto before, it's bizarre but also a lot of fun to watch them chow down. the little bastards have very expensive palates and a slavishly devoted human. Lucky them....I have the palate but not the human. -
We have the same problem with our 1.5 year old male. He started developing the crystals too so both our cats went on it....i was concerned giving giving them prescription cat food considering how young they are. I have been taking the can and dividing it into 1/8 and mixing 1/8 with chicken petguard and that does the trick....we also give wysong uretic dry food. I may try going back to just regular too see if he's over his issue given other peoples success....everyones input is so helpful:)

my vet said NEVER feed them dry food again.
if your cat got crystals that young (the vet said it usually hits in middle age) then I'd be cautious. and get rid of the dry food. I asked about the Wysong (I've been feeding them the regular kind and they always loved it) but she said absolutely not, a cat who has had crystals in their urine should never eat dry food of any kind, and male cats should probably never eat it in the first place.
I'm just passing on what she said. I fed another male cat dry food all his life and he lived to a ripe old age. But having seen how sick Buster got, I'd hate to ever see that happen to him again. Or pay for the operation which would make Buster into Busterette. -
Yeah...I'm well aware of the dry food...thing is the vet wants my other cat to have some dry b/c she has gingivitis so impossible to keep separate. They only get a little amount everyday....At one point I didn't give either of them dry and he still had the problem with the crystals so...What I am doing now seems to be working so I am not going to switch it...

Subject: Dog Delite
Hi, I took my male cat to Animal Kind a few years ago and he was diagnosed with the same thing, a young cat also. I could not afford the costs but found Dog Delite on 3rd Ave. has it and it's cheaper.
I get r/d dry and c/d wet pate in a can. My cats love is also.
Jeff tries not to raise costs too much above what he gets it for. They also deliver depending on the area you live in, the delivery date will be determined.
I requested after 7p.m. and sometimes, they get late, but they get there. DD takes credit over at the store or a check or cash upon delivery.
They're listed.
Peace,
Animal Lover -
Thank you, everybody!
Pet Delight on Third Avenue delivers, in the evening, with minimal delivery charge, and only 28 dollars (and change) a case, which is 8 dollars cheaper than Animal Kind. And they will bring the cases up to the fourth floor.
Perfect!
