SPLIT TOPIC: taking a car service with your pet
Somewhat unrelated, but funny story. Last Friday (when it was POURING) my little pug got spayed. There was a big debate amongst the vet techs when I went to pick her up about how to get her home without getting the stitches wet and risking infection. They called the vet in the exam room and everything.
Long story short, I ended up calling Eastern car service to drive me home--four, maybe five blocks with my pooch.. I'm sure they thought I was crazy. Oh well. At least I tipped VERY well considering my financial standing

a little of topic (maybe I need a new thread...) but I was wondering what to do if/when we need to take a car with dog in tow. He's not a lap-dog and a crate doesn't fit well into a car. Are there any that will allow a dog in the floorboards?

No question there are different policies with car services and big dogs.
I would take a paper to list the name of car service and their response.Start making calls and ASK..in advance... "I need to transport my 100 pound dog from my home (give location) to my vet( or the airport) on blah blah street (give address).. what would the cost be and would I need to make some advance arrangement? Note response. There are some situations where (especially in relationship to my pets ) I want to anticipate the situation. Goodidea!! Do you agree?

Subject: dogs in cars
Last week while on the way to work my friend found a dog on the street. ASPCA was no help, and ACC said it would be hours before they could maybe come to get the dog (and, as of days later, have not followed up). The dog had a thick rope around his neck, and was scared, but once he saw that my friend was nice he was really friendly and sweet and social. My friend took the dog to the local police precinct (77th) and they would not help (but suggested that my friend just tie the dog up outside somewhere and leave it!).
Finally we called Apple car service and they took my friend to ACC. My friend (not knowing in the morning that a car service would have to be paid for) didn't have enough money to pay the full fare, let alone the tip. The driver was really kind and helpful and told my friend not to worry about it, and not to worry about the dirty paw prints in the car. We did say, several times, when we called for the car that there was a dog. But you never know.
I think that, like the police (who, in the past, have helped by holding a stray dog safe until ACC could come get it) if there are no set rules written out then you are at the mercy of the dispatcher and the driver, and their moods. If you find a car service that does have set rules that accept dogs, let us know? -
i haven't had problems hailing gypsy cabs with my dog (about 50 pounds).
very funny story: when i lived in harlem i took a gypsy cab with my dog to my family's house on long island. when she was younger, she used to puke almost every time she was in a car. i could tell when she was going to do it because she got this weird smile on her face and started gagging (duh). about 30 minutes into the trip i can see that she is gonna puke all over the back seat of this cab. i was in a panic because the driver warned me about the dog making a mess. unable to think of anything else, i cup my hands under my dog's mouth and she pukes into them. a little bit gets on the seat, but she licks it up, hiding the evidence. but im still sitting there cupping a big puddle of puke in the backseat of the cab. i sit there for about 5 minutes trying to think of what to do. eventually i roll down the window and throw the puke out onto the long island expressway. by the time i got to my destination, my hands were covered with dry puke, but the driver had no idea what happened. good times. -
I've taken my big Akita/Shepard mix in the back of an Eastern car. When I ordered the car, I made sure they knew I had a big dog and they didn't have a problem with it. I brought along an old sheet to put down in the back seat because she tends to shed. She jumped in, licked the driver on the face, and off we went.
