Revisit to NoNo
We had dinner here on 7th Ave this evening and was pleasantly suprised.
I had relegated this restaurant to lunch... large bowl of Gumbo and cornbred and those 2 choices were a winner but haven't done dinner in a long time. I think they have a new Chef now or at least a lot more attention in the kitchen. This was early dinner for 3 adults and a 2 year old (hey he is my grandson and a seasoned Park Slope diner!)
We had one prix fix dinner that included appetizer that was crawfish pop corn style. It came to the table piping hot and delicious. Daughter in law had big bowl of shrimp Gumbo that in itself was a meal. I had salad with blackened Chicken... gorgeous and in defference to the toddler we had red beans and rice and a mac n' cheese. The poor little guy had to fight us for those two dishes. They were very good. This kid knows how to not shout in a restaurant but everyone at the table got the message when he said,"That is my food! Don't eat it." The cornbread is lovely and since the little monster had commandeered more than his share , another basket was swiftly brought to the table.
I am not getting in to the "is this authentic new Orleans" cuisine... that had been discussed on previous thread.
What I can tell you was all the food was delicious. It was served in generous portions and with considerable grace on the part of the waiter.
The manager engaged us (but not for 15 minutes... reference to another recent thread here) and we tipped generously and took menus because this place does take out delivery. This is my kind of comfort food..
So... If u haven't eaten here in a while... try it again. Good chance you will like it.

Thanks! And I will.

I wish I had the same experience. Went for lunch w/my toddler. food was fine, but I felt like the staff had just experienced a collective death in the family. there was absolutely no joy in eating there.
Random bad experience? I hope so. We'll try again to confirm. -
thanks for the update, veets. i am one of those who wrote them off early on, but if you've noticed a difference in the food then maybe it's time to reevaluate!

I had a pretty good dinner experience there a week or two ago. Had the special: fried green tomatoes and a pulled pork sammy. The service wasn't so great - we got stuck in the back corner by the kitchen b/c of a rather large and loud dining party. Our waiter was definitely new and unsure, but the food overcame all that. Definitely worth revisiting.

Had to re-open this thread because just had an incredibly bizarre experience there. This isn't a rant, more like a "what the heck???" I guess they were busy, although there were plenty of empty tables, but the server(s) just didn't have it together. They brought the food for other tables to our table three times, including an appetizer after we had already requested the check. They also took our salad to another table before they brought it to us. It basically seemed they took the plates to each table until they found the table that ordered it.
It was particularly puzzling because one of our dishes took a long time, so when they brought something to the table, we were hopeful it was our order but it turned out not to be.
Then, they offer dessert so we look at the menu. We both order the red velvet cake...at which point the server says, "oh yeah, we're out of that, but we have a vanilla cake instead". My better half says "Okay, I'll have that" but I pass because I'm not going to waste good calories on a cake I can make at home. Not a big deal either way.
So 10 minutes later, he comes back and says "we can't get any cake tonight". Just seems odd. Also, a lot of times all the servers were clumped back by the computer terminal doing something like closing checks or something, but it was weird that they'd all be back there all at once and nobody was waiting on tables.
I noticed that the table beside us ordered wine and then put in their order (during a separate visit from the waiter) but they didn't get their drinks for about 15 minutes.
I'm guessing something just pushed them off-track today, but it was really like the Keystone Cops there tonight. Regarding the food, the jamabalya was fine but the chicken was not done enough. But I left scratching my head thinking "what is up with that service? they've been in business long enough to have worked out kinks like that".
Did we just hit it on a particularly screwy night? -
that sounds strange, and frustrating. Maybe their computers were down and that's why they didn't know who ordered which food.
I've never been there, so no idea what the service is like -
My wife and I have always had great experiences when eating here. The service isn't great or anything, but it is competent and not rude. Which is more than enough given the fact that we love the food.

i paid a return visit on friday night, and thought the food was fine.. but the next night, i popped-into 2-boots to hear some music and thought the gumbo there was much better than nono's.
Howdy, Stranger!
