Park Slope Sports Club/Crunch

Does anyone have any further info on the company owning Park Slope Sports Club merging with the Crunch people? It was mentioned during one of my classes at the gym?

It would be.....interesting, certainly more expensive, to see what becomes of this.

  • ignore the question mark at the end of that second sentence, obviously....
  • They are?! Awesome! I'm a Crunch member that's usually too lazy to venture to Manhattan to whip my lard ass into shape on the weekends. 8)
  • Not that anyone asked, but I love the place on 5th ave and Union (Body Reserve/The Bank?). It's so cheap, low-tech, unfrilly , et al.
  • i think this would suck. i like the lower rates at PSSC and its more low key. i hate those ugly crunch logos. they are obnoxious

i guess the effect remains to be seen. i'm very used to the class schedule and just the general rhythm of the place. i don't know how much a change would disrupt things. i did hear that the classes are much more diverse at Crunch, which could be interesting.

ultimately, it is about the rates, and i hope that doesn't change a bit.

it's amazing that they just put a couple of kegs of Gatorade up front and that's getting more action than the ill-fated juice bar did.
  • Subject: disappointing...

i was disappointed to hear about this. I specifically like the place - even tho' I think there is much too much stimulation going on -- because it was independent. as i said to my friend when she told me, "sometimes it seems like everything can be bought."

    cat.
  • I was in my home Crunch gym last night and heard them talking about the new Park Slope branch. Where is this place?
  • Subject: union street & 7th ave.

    union street & 7th avenue.
slope fitness. (i think. i'm having a block about it but i think that's what it's called.)

Actuallly, the rumor is about the Park Slope Sports Club which is on Flatbush near 7th Ave.

At least I think that's what the rumor is about, I'm totally confused now!
  • Subject: interesting!

oh! maybe i was told the wrong club. the person who told me said it was the one at Union but she's not from Park Slope so she could have gotten it wrong! i'd love to know. thanks. cat.
  • PSSC is on Flatbush, between 7th and 8th. It's actually not 100% independent. Its part of a bigger company called Fitness Ventures, which also runs the Ft. Greene one (did that ever open? i heard it had a climbing wall), as well as a handful of other gyms around the country with the same logo as PSSC.

like i said, as long as my rates stay the same and the classes go untouched, i'm fine with it. the staff makeup doesn't have the personality it had when i joined four years ago, so a little shaking up there wouldn't hurt.
  • www.fitnessventures.net is the website. no mention of Crunch, but i had no idea there was a Union Sq Sports Club!
  • Subject: Crunch

It's offical. I asked the employees at PSSC and they confirmed that they have been bought by Crunch. Hence all the new equipment. No timeline as to when it gets announced, etc.

They did open and its awesome.

ok so now my gym has crunch signs in the window...i was really hoping it would stay independent from the ugly bright yellow signs....shoot I wonder if they are going to raise the rates even tho' i have a contract.

i liked the small gym vibe... i only hope the staff and members stay the way they are.

american apparel and crunch...i just keep saying over and over to myself "it is on the park slope side of the street, not in PH"

    UGH :x

They've finally turned over? Yes! Sorry, I'm just a lazy Crunch member that hated having to go to Manhattan on the weekends.

I know when my friend was a member of a Bally's that turned into a Crunch (though they're the same company), they honored his contract until the end and then charged the regular rates on renewal.

ETA: It's listed as Crunch Park Slope on the site. I'm fucking stoked that there's 24-hour one in Ft. Greene too.
  • now i'm waiting for an Equinox Park Slope (NORTH Park Slope, that is)...
  • I went gym shopping a couple of months ago and had seen the post about PSSC turning into a crunch, when I asked the salesman about it he said they owned Crunch. It contributed to the bad vibe I got from the place. I joined NYSC which rocks and as I am freelance is great for me becaue I now have lockers and showers all over the city and can work out wherever.
  • Does anyone have any insight on whether the Crunch ownership has improved things/changed prices, etc.? I quit about a year ago (for these reasons) but I kind of miss belonging to a gym and if it were under new ownership I guess I'd consider coming back.

It's funny--I quit PSSC for some of the reasons you mentioned, and re-joined Crunch (I LOOOOOVE the classes). But now I can go to both! Awesome!
  • Now that PSSC has gone Crunch, I'm considering joinin as there's also a location near to my office. I'm curious, though, as to how much it actually costs per month. Could a current member let me know so I can spare myself a painful 'tour' only to discover its completely out of my price range? PM me if you prefer.

    Thanks!

just posted my thoughts on the topic on here. i've been a regular member of the gym for five years and have lots to say on the topic. :)
  • what I posted in your linked thread:

I have nothing against crunch, but if anyone is on the fence as to what to do, do yourself a favor and check out Body Reserve, yeah the website sucks but the equipment is great (rumor has it the're getting some quality treadmills, the ones with tv's in em) and they just added some brand new equipment. Overall the place is spacious and clean, the staff's great, and the members on the whole are friendly and courtious.
  • So does anyone actually know yet what the new Crunch-based rates are going to be? Crunch hasn't updated its website for PSSC yet.
  • How can anyone go to Crunch? What's the matter with you people. PSSC was disgusting to begin with. It's owner is now corporate. We must fight to keep the family run businesses open.

The Slope Health & Fitness on 7th & Union is family run, and the owner's family has been in Park Slope since the 20's.

I don't know about you, but I will never sell out.

you clearly work there. I'm convinced of it now. If you do, why not say so and offer some nice responses to people's concerns, offer a joining discount to members of this board? I mean, if anyone follows your posts thru the various gym threads, you're going to end up doing more harm to your gym than good.
