Best Pet Store in the Slope? — Brooklynian

Best Pet Store in the Slope?

mpmav1
edited November -1 in Park Slope
Recently moved to South Park Slope and wondering what opinions are for the best pet store is. I have a dog and want to find a good local location to pick up food, general supplies, etc. I’m looking particularly for a place with good selection and reasonable prices.

Opinions? (and yes, I recognize this is very subjective… but at least it will give me a starting point)

Thanks all.

  • Petland on 5th and 12th-ish should meet those needs.
  • NYC Pets on 7th Ave near 12th.
  • OP, no idea, as I just tried the place on 9th st around 5th Ave and its selection was really limited. But your dog is way cute. (assuming that's it in your pic)
  • The place on 9th Street by 5th Avenue used to be VC Pets...it is now NYCPets...same family owner, but alas, not Mike (who was one of the owners) working there - they have a young guy (and sometimes a young woman) and neither one of them is very helpful or knowledgable (interesting, I stopped by one nite and there was someone else filling in from one of the other NYCPet locations and she was great)...so I'm not surprised that the stock wasn't great. I would recommend the other NYCPet stores....just not this one (unless by some miracle Mike comes back to save the location or they hire different people there!)

The lack of good staff on the 9th street location is really noticeable. Many people miss Mike. The prices are higher too in last months but that might just be prices on many things are headed up.the location is so convenient for me I still buy the dog food there but what I find myself doing is buying 2 bags at a time so I don't have to go in there as often. The 7th ave 12 street store is more pleasant and better stocked and the staff seems more engaged.
  • Yeah. NYCPet.com on 12th & 7th is the only way to go. They deliver for free too - which is helpful when buying big heavy bags of food or cat litter.

    Petland is sketch. Please avoid.

Yeah agree with the negative review on Petland. I don't even like the name. Once I was stuck and needed to by a leash there and made the purchase and vowed unless emergency was in my face would not buy anything there again.

    I forgot about NYC Pet.

I rescind my Petland suggestion. It was the only place I could think of in the area. Plus, I'm on codeine

Haha. I've done the exact same thing. I hope it goes out of business one of these days.

I heard two kids around 10 years old or so walking past it once and one said "let's not go in there - it's weird."

    Couldn't have agreed more.

FYI - my main beef with them is their selling of live animals that they don't know or care much about. :(
  • Petland is not a great place re the live animals, but this one and some in the city have been lifesavers for me many times. It's hard to find live food (crickets, wax worms) for my gecko around here and they usually have them and generally have someone to help me. EVERY time I've tried to get them at a Petco, I've had to wait at least 10 minutes for help.
  • Agree - NYCPets is good - I use the one at 5th Ave. & Union. Never used the Petland here, but we did when we lived in Manhattan. It was better than Petco. Also, we adopted our wonderful cat at an adoption event at a Petland out in Staten Island. He's a love, so we are grateful that Petland made some space available for rescue organizations to hold their adoption days on weekends, for what that's worth.
  • There's also a nice pet store on Seventh Ave between 15th and 16th. They seem to have a little more variety of the higher-end canned dog food than other stores in the neighborhood and the staff is always sweet and helpful.
