query to those who saw or called about bag of dead pigeons.. — Brooklynian

query to those who saw or called about bag of dead pigeons..

anonymous
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
regarding the trash bag at 50 Plaza Street which was found to be full of dead pigeons...

when was this first spotted?

did you see the police come and open the bag?

did anyone talk to the police? if so, what did they say?

did the police look to say what the 'cause of death' was?

did the police say what would happen next?

when you called 311 did they send you to department of sanitation or...?

one person said they called 311 4 times... did others call and have different experiences?

any other details appreciated.

thanks.

cat.

ut oh. for such an active board, does 'no reply' mean people are afraid to come forward with information?

Maybe no one knows anything besides what was already posted in the other thread...

no dude, people are scared. they were threatened by the PLA (pigeon lovers association) and 311 stopped taking their calls. yo, I'd be scared, too.

    I've heard about the PLA.
  • just saw a cat running by with a pigeon in it's mouth, normally i wouldn't think twice... but... now i am wondering.. will the cat be o.k.?!
  • Subject: not exactly...

the first poster posted that the police came and left so obviously that person saw something - which was not relayed in their post. such as what the police DID. also, people called 311 but did not relay anything about what 311 said. so yes there was more than what was in their original posts.

perhaps they are not logging in but seems like they most likely are. i hope i'm wrong becuz while people may be getting a good chuckle there actually was animal cruelty involved here and ineffectiveness of police/311 system.

    During the month of October.
cat2 wrote: did you see the police come and open the bag?
No, but I'm looking forward to the "CSI: Brooklyn" stylized examination of the contents. With fancy zooms, digital effects and a techno-soundtrack.
cat2 wrote: did anyone talk to the police? if so, what did they say?
    "Sacks of dead pigeons? What?"
cat2 wrote: did the police look to say what the 'cause of death' was?
    "Forget it kid. It's Chinatown."
cat2 wrote: did the police say what would happen next?
Funding for a dead pigeon memorial at the corner of Park Place and Flatbush.
cat2 wrote: when you called 311 did they send you to department of sanitation or...?
They said that the mayor is considering a dead pigeon department. But I would have to pay HIM to run it.

I called 311 once to ask about garbage pickup days. And they told me Tuesday and Thursday. Now I don't have to live with festering bags of filth.

Nobody asked Bert from "Sesame Street" if his pigeon obessession finally got the best of him.
  • Subject: strange crowd a-gathered here...

this board attracts a unique bunch that takes certain things way too seriously (the changing of the letters on the Flatbush Pavilion, for one example), posts 10 different accountings of the same news story (as if one wasn't enough), and yet doesn't take animal cruelty seriously. what a strange bunch you all are.
  • I don't think anyone takes the Pavilion letters seriously; it's just funny. I think a lot of people want this board to be the "official" voice or forum of the neighborhood but really it's just a place to "hang out" with people from the neighborhood, regardless of where you are, physically. Jokes are just more fun than dead pigeons, is all.

The topic of animal cruelty was duly noted in the original thread, I'm sure nobody was advocating it. Perhaps you found some of the jokes inappropriate, also duly noted.

That said, if this is a sensitive/aggravating topic for you then I suggest you do something and show up at the monthly police community meeting and ask the Luitennant in charge of community relations, find out exactly why nothing was done. Let us know

I'm sure this wont be the last dead animal found, let us know what the correct procedure is.
  • cat2, you post a request at 9:57 am. About two hours later you post again at 11:49 am saying "ut oh. for such an active board, does 'no reply' mean people are afraid to come forward with information?"

Ummm, how about you find a little patience in yourself? Especially since today's a workday and you posted your question at the beginning of most people's work day.

A web board is a community. Not a waiter on concierge. If someone can help you, then they will. It's not like you can snap your fingers and someone comes over with water to fill the glass. Demanding and berating people for not providing the answers you seek in less than a day--less than a 1/2 day even--is a bit lame to say the least.

Also, if you actually registered on this board--instead of being a 'guest'--you could send private messages to others who have discussed this previously.

In addition, if you posted this is the original thread, then some of the people who contributed to that conversation might have gotten an email about a new message. Starting a thread means waiting for them to actually visit the board as you stated earlier.
  • Subject: points well taken.

    points well taken.thanks.
  • cat2, what are you going to do with the information anyway?
  • thanks to everyone for saying all of the things i wanted to say but didn't want to cause any further rukus about the pigeons.

i called 311 but i was at work today...working. very hard in fact.
and now i am home, have eaten dinner and decided to see what went on today in my lovely neighborhood.

the first time i called, they took the info and said they would look into it.
the second time i called i was obviously more agitated and advised her that it was not ONE dead pigeon, but a BAG full.
    i think she got it.
she forwarded me to a "311 SPECIALIST" (oooooooh)
they took really detailed info and by that evening it was gone.
    thats all i got.
  • I called 311 4 times. Someone else called the police. The pigeons were picked up. Smell is gone. I am happy.

Theory: Someone poisoned a bunch of pigeons roosting in their building or they were keeping birds and something killed the birds or they could not care for them anymore so they killed the pigeons. Disposal was botched.
  • speaking of pigeons... the ones hanging out near target and old navy are the most fatass obese pigeons ive ever seen.
  • Does feeding the things to death count as inhumane treatment? :P
  • Subject: still a mystery...

    hi moufaisbad,

    thanks for further info.

vanilla, i wanted the info to provide to local and nyc press about how poorly this was handled.

i don't know if anyone contacted the bklyn papers reporter.

    thanks.

    cat.
