So I hate to say "wedding dress" because it's actually a fairly simple cotton column dress, but I will be wearing it to my nuptials, so it is a wedding dress that I need altered. I've read threads that mention jeans and casual wear, but as I really can't take a chance with this, I need some user reviews of the best tailors/seamstresses in the Slope and surrounding neighborhoods. If you could, please speak of your actual experiences, rather than the thoughtful but not incredibly helpful "I think there's someone on 8th street" kind of reply. I got the dress on the cheaps, and I'm really trying to watch my budget, so spending a fortune to have some straps removed and a hem shortened is not in the cards for this bride. Thanks!

    I don't know how far you want to travel, but on Union Street between Hicks and Columbia is a dry cleaner that I've taken many, many dresses to to have altered and I've never been disappointed. If its a very special dress you may want to find a dressmaker, just in case. Or maybe buy a 30 dollar try out dress to test someones talent.

    the new place on PPW/16th is amazing. and CHEAP. she redid an entire dress for me, huge amount of work, for $26. and it was perfect.

    And to answer the original question, I've also heard they did a great job re-lining a coat. I'm also planning to bring a wedding dress there. The woman in Seattle who made it has said she'd do the alterations, but I need to have someone pin it properly. If the price is right, I may also have this place (Agnes?) do the whole job.

    Update: Agnes Tailor Shop did an EXCELLENT job on my wedding dress. 45 bucks to take it in in several places, put in hanging straps, etc. They were really fast and quite nice. Highly recommended.

    Is there anyone specifically at the shop that you recommend for the alterations or is there only one person? I just picked up my BM dress for a wedding in June and it is huge on me, so I'll need someone good to take it in.

    You know, I'm not sure who worked on my dress. The woman who's there on Saturdays (didn't get any names, but she's in her 50s, short-medium brown hair, Polish, smiles a lot) pinned it and spent time with me talking about what I wanted to have done. I bet everyone who works there does a good job.

    I had a very oversized bridesmaid dress that was sent to me without much time before the wedding. I took it in to Agnes. It needed hemming, the top taken in, and the bent boning removed. After reading several posts on her I was not expecting the $85 cost of this! My mom could do it for free if I were where she is :/

    bridesmaids dresses are cruel!
