yes, big time service related issues. made me very angry. I usually will give a place a 2nd chance with stuff like that, but, this was just outrageous IMO (and a friend of ours was there the same day going through the same thing) that i don't even want to go near them again. I guess I am just stubborn that way
I've eaten there a couple of times and had a pretty good experience each time. Not perfect, but I thought they tried. You should give them another try.
Well, Jamzer-how could I say no to you? I am convinced, we shall try again.
now, what new French place on 5th called Cantile that mama speaks of?
I think I found it. is the place you speak of mama?:

Yup, that's it. It's on the to-do list and I haven't heard anything bad yet.
-
It is too bad about Belleville - they were quite good for a couple years, but I agree that things have gone downhill.
Maybe it was that hemorrhoid commercial they filmed there. -

Great, but a favor please - don't blame me if things don't go well!
-
Oh no fair Jamzer! I was going to hunt you down if it wasn't any good, and considering you wear a suit and bop around all the time, you are probably pretty easy to find.

Their croque monsieur at brunch is the only passable thing on that menu. I've been to many Paris bistros that might have rude waiters but their service was still a thousand times better than Belleville's. They may be brusque in France but that's because they have the food to back it up...Belleville doesn't. It's a shame because of all the actual spaces in PS for French bistros this place had the most charm in terms of atmosphere. We need Gordon Ramsey to come in and shape them up!
-
yes, it is charming with the tin ceilings and all. but, i can't help remembering the large bodega/semi market that had that space for many, many years before Belleville.
-
Belleville will be around for many many years to come. The original owner signed a 30 year lease!!!! This was back in the day when store rents in the area where very cheap.
I had no idea that the place has changed managment. Hopefully they will turn around for the better or sell it to someone else who would. The place used to be really good and the location is top notch. -

That bodega was an awful smelly hole though. -
I may be wrong, but although the "management" has changed, the owners have not. In fact, since its inception, Belleville has had at least six managers...
I remember when Fabrice was the manager and he really made it a great place to be...even though an American named Joe was doing all the cooking. Both of them really captured a neighborhood bistro vibe.
I haven't been recently (in the last 2 years) because I grew weary of the ownership trying to change managers every 9 months or so...and service/food suffering for it. -

Well.. If you haven't been there in 2 years... try it and let us know what you think.

My point is that with every change in management my enjoyment decreased. That being said, the ownership has been, to my knowledge, constant.
Until I hear someone give a good review of Belleville, I have no reason to or interest in trying it again. -

Wow...then I'm even more impressed with their design because it looks like that place had been there since the early 1900's. So much care when into appearances and not enough went into the food. -
Yikes I just made a reservation there for this Saturday night. Should I go to perch instead? The location is so perfect. Damn those Cocette people for closing shop!
-
so i finally tried belleville for the first time for brunch on saturday...
love the decor, but the service was HORRIBLE.
the french waiter was actually pleasant and said hello when we walked in, but we had a waiter who was clearly not in the least bit interested in us. we also overheard him get chewed out by his boss for not coming over to take our order sooner.
too bad, cause my croque monsier was delicious.
we had to ASK for coffee (when they delivered the food) even though it comes with brunch. not to mention that for brunch, most people want coffee first thing...i know i do...
don't know what to say. great food, lovely space, but the service left a very bad taste in my mouth. oh and it looks like brunch used to come with a mimosa, but it no longer does. it's still on the menu with the coffee or tea, but chalked out with a black marker. not very classy...
and the place was completely dead. -
belzjm.... sorry you had to actually try Belleville. Whe it opened there was great care taken with every aspect and it was just terrific. At that time the menu was not set and seasonal ingredients were used a every meal had an element of pleasant suprise. Brunch especially can be a magical meal, one that you have the time to linger over an enjoy. The place wasn't crowded because I suppose many people have scratched it off the long and short list.

I was talking to one of the manager's of Belleville last weekend and he told me they just hired a new chef. He mentioned the place the chef previously worked in Manhattan but I can't remember the name. He was aware that the food has gone downhill and he said in a couple of weeks we should come back and check them out. He also said they were in talks to open a wine bar near there.

The following is a recent cut/paste from park slope parents. Has anyone been to Belleville since the Fall? Is the food there good again?

Hey Delina thanks for posting this. I had brunch this Sunday here and it was really great! For those people who would rather not dine with kids I have to say that between 2pm and 3pm there was not one child in the place. I don't care if kids are welcome or not. The food was great. When this place first opened the emphasis was on what cuisine was appropriate in which season and so the choices evolved. There was a mainstay of dishes served regularly that was terrific as well. I hope that the new owners harken back to the past and invent their own future.
-
My bf and I have had dinner there several times in the past few months and each time it was excellent - fantastic food and great service. We were just saddened by the paucity of other diners in the place, because we'd really like to see it do well. So check it out!
-
Sweet I'm going to have to check this place out again.
-
This is one of those PS spots I just never got around to, only visiting once for brunch. I thought the service was pretty bad as well, but their burger wasn't too bad. Not a place I'd go out of my way for but, if someone else I was with wanted to go, I wouldn't put up a fight. How's that for a half-assed endorsement?
-
J0518,, Just wondering if you had this brunch under new owner and chef?

jesus.....it was, maybe, a year and a half ago? that would be a "no." -
O.K. Sweetie.. far be it from me to TELL people where to eat in the neighborhood but take note that originally I started this thread..note the header.. so I was so out of this place for a long time.
The past Sunday we had those out-of-town relatives that we did not really want to spend time with so we landed up at Belleville because there were open tables and we thought it would be a quicky. Geez they are from the West Coast... are all those people from California boring? (doubt it.. only the ones related to my husband) and we were pleasantly suprised with how lovely the meal and the service was.
I want this place to make a go of it, even in this lousy economy and I think with the change of ownership they deserve a "try" and brunch is a good re-visit on this place. Many years ago, before it was Glorious Restaurant Row on 5th Ave. Belleville had such a stellar beginning I just hope it can re-flame the fire from the "never again" ashes. -
Subject: Bonjour from Belleville!
Wow everyone!
I'd like to introduce myself... my name is Paul and I am the managing partner of Belleville. My partner and I took over Belleville in mid/late 2008 and the transition took quite a few months, to say the least.
This site was introduced to me by a (now) regular customer, who was... like most, reluctant to visit us again. She recommended I take a look at how my fellow Park Slope neighbors are slowly re-embracing Belleville. In reading through your threads, I realize that you are all aware of the challenges we faced in turning this restaurant around.
I want to sincerely thank all of the people that have supported us during this transition! I'd also like extend an invitation to try us again if you were one of those who gave up on Belleville years ago. Running a restaurant isn't easy, and I can't promise there won't be human errors. What I can promise is that we will do our best in bringing Belleville back to it's original standing as a Park Slope anchor.
Please don't hesitate to say hi next time you are in!
-Paul and the Belleville family -
Hi Paul - I love it when local merchants chime in. Keep up the good work!
-blue -
Hi Paul... I love it as well when local business owners take the time and effort to introduce themselves.
So many restaurants in PS and so little time... but we will be back at Belleville!
And we will say hello... -
Ditto, Paul...thanks for coming to introduce yourself and post.
-
I've noticed improvement but I don't go often enough to be sure. I'll have to remedy that. By the way...love the lounge!
Howdy, Stranger!
