South Slope gyms — Brooklynian

South Slope gyms

I'm relocating to South Slope soon (16th St + 7th Ave) and need to join a gym in the area. I've been to NYSC on 9th before, but was wondering about other options. Does anyone have experience with the YMCA on 9th or the Harbor Fitness on 15th St?

THanks!

  • been going to Harbor for many years, and I like it. Clean, friendly, easy to get on machines, reasonably priced, management responsive to feedback
  • I don't have gym feedback but you're going to be my neighbor :)

    THanks!
Did you buy the condo in the weird building?

I use the YMCA, they have family membership plus they have a pool which, btw is good exercise for pregnant women and they used to have swim classes for toddlers. (I took my son and he grew up to be a lifeguard and swim instructor until it got boring..).
  • The YMCA also used to have swim classes for infants!! You would bring a kid at about 6 months of age, and they would encourage you to "torpedo" the kid under water. Apparently, babies have a reflex (from the womb, I suppose) in which they automatically stop trying to breathe when underwater.

It worked like a charm. My infants, now 27 and 30, swim and scuba and are as comfortable in deep water as they are swimming in martinis (which they learned to do without my assistance).
  • My husband loves Harbor. It was cheaper than his old Park Slope Fitness (Crunch) membership. However, I think the price has gone up a little since he started there. They do have some days they are open 24hrs, which is cool.
  • We belong to the Y and like it a lot. People are nice and down to earth. Plus we get a 20% discount, as do many people, check the list so we pay I think $68 month for a family membership
  • I belonged to Harbor for years and really liked it. Nice management. Good equipment. About $55 a month. A great smoothie station for a good after workout protein shake. And if nothing has changed in the past six months some of the cutest girls in the Slope working the front desk! I miss it since I moved and had to join NYSC.

The Y does have a pool but they have a lot of time restrictions on when it can be used.
  • The YMCA is great, just have patience navigating around all the baby carriages in the daytime.
  • I like NYSC, but if I was moving to where you are, I'd probably try Harbor. I need to be close to a gym to make sure I go!
And I know the Y has changed a lot, but when I went years ago it was awful...I know it's not like that anymore...but I just can't join again after remembering what it was like
  • I haven't tried this yet but Harbor has a day rate of (I think) $20.00. So you can go and check it out for the day. I seem to recall that they also have a trial one week free thing or something like that.
  • You might want to check out the Y again. They have made some major updates there. Do you like to go to classses or use cardio machines?
  • I'm really happy with NYSC...and I have a good rate because I joined when they first opened here in the Slope. I also have a personal trainer that I love!
I do the machines and also do spin classes. Like I said, I know the Y has changed a lot but I'm fine with NYSC (not that they don't need improvements too!)
