  • do NOT use Washington Realty on Washington Ave. I cannot emphasize that enough.
  • My wife and I used Corcoran (Ft. Greene office) and found them to be excellent.

Rather than waste time rehashing it for you, just search the message board (top of the page), you'll find plenty of information from people who've had personal experiences with her and a variety of other agents/brokers.

Marjorie Thompson is a psycho b****. Not sure there is anything else that needs to be said. She tried to keep selling my apartment AFTER I took it off the market AND threatened me. I had to change the locks.
  • thanks for putting that right out there. a search of the boards turned up a small number of people with large complaints. seems unfortunate, given that she's a nabe, no?

I actually didn't have any problems with her. one of her underlings walked me all over the 'hood before I found my apt, and then I talked her broker fee down. it was a pretty smooth transaction - she even let me take my credit report with me (the idea of that lying around in someone's file freaks me out) with no argument, seeing as how I did pay for it.

that said, a friend of mine who was moving here from DC visited her office, and was given a set of keys and a list of addresses to go view apartments by herself. my friend, understandably, was pretty irritated by that. so she moved to williamsburg instead. bah.
  • she was so increadibly unhelpful when I was looking to rent. she kept promising places would be available for viewing on a certain date and then when I would call back/or drop by on that date she would make up some excuse and/or be annoyed that I was "bothering" her. she also would constantly post stuff on craigslist but then not show or mention those places to me because she would say that I wasn't the "right fit." maybe that is true, but I would prefer making up my own mind.

yeah. she seemed pretty scattered and I'm not sure I would have been able to work with her long term. I showed up one afternoon, saw 5 apartments and put in an application on one of them. then I came back a week later to sign a lease and grab some keys. long term she would have driven me batshit.
  • ok, ok. got it. thank you all for ringing in.
  • Call Akira Wada at slope heights reality
  • I second the recommendation for Akira Wada. While we did not buy through him, we worked with him briefly and he was the consummate professional: friendly, reliable, and knowledgeable.
  • Mr. Shahid is very good. His number is 347-386-2288.
  • Subject: realtors in Crown heights

i never found anyone who wanted to work with me over time for the year i spent looking for a house. Basically I zeroed in on the area i wanted to live in and trolled it personally on my bike every week. craigs list also was my best resource online though i always checked the Fillmore real estate site because they had a lot of cheaper listings. corcoran is going to be more high end properties. they really put you thru the pre-qual hassle and then they try to get "competing" bids by continuing to show properties that already have accepted offers on them. this is stressful for the buyer.

They (corcoran) did this to me. Very sleazy behavior!
  • I would try to use a local broker at first. That said, I do get alot of mail from Century 21, Halstead and of course Corcoran.

just to explain the continued showings... ive had deals fall apart on me... the first time it happened, i didnt have a back up... so thats why we show even if there's an accepted offer "its not a done deal until the contracts are signed"

on the other hand, some sellers prefer to stop showings once they accept an offer... im all for that when it happens, but if we see the deal is not working out, i start the process all over again starting with a call to everyone who initially saw it.

  • Subject: Great Real Estate Agent

    We bought in 2005 from Eva Daniels. office #: 718 852 8018, cell: 917 687 8473

She was great to work with and we spent 3 years looking in Brooklyn and dealt with many agents. We almost bought a house throught Corcoran and we don't have a lot of good things to say about them. They do have a nice website but there are some real issues. We would never work with them again.

Eva was the best. The only agent I can recommend in complete good faith

I wasn't enthusiastic about my Corcoran experience either. I might go to them when it's time to sell though. Then they might be weasels, but they'll be my weasels!

I just had to share with the blog an email I got from a friend about her frustrations in dealing with real estate brokers.

To all agents/brokers who will not co-broke.

You are doing a disservice to the SELLERS you represent because not as many people will see the listing, and those that do will not be, on average, the kind of serious, quality buyers who tend to work through agents. Their properties, in many cases, languish for months unsold, listed only on your own website or, repeatedly, on Craigslist.

You are doing a disservice to the BUYERS who are not able to choose a buyer's agent with whom they can build trust, and who will work on their behalf, get to know what they are looking for, set up showings, and shepherd them through the offer/contract/closing process. Instead, they have to jump from sellers agent to sellers agent, limited only to the endless exclusives which make up the majority of their listings.

And all because you want the entire commission all to yourself. Lame and selfish.

A higher commission would make co-broking possible. A slight increase in the price would make up the difference to the seller, and the difference is minimal for the buyer when they break it down into monthly mortgage payment.

Your excuse about how evil and selfish the big name agencies are is a hollow farce - if you charged a 6% commission, you could co-broke with them just fine (You would only get 3% instead of 4%? Oh, no! Now who is the greedy one? The point is your property would sell faster, which benefits the seller you supposedly represent.)

Your other excuse about how you represent your community, grassroots, homegrown, little guy, local knowledge, blah, blah, is even more ridiculous. You can still specialize in a particular area or property type AND co-broke. Then you would actually be working on behalf of the sellers in your area, not just SAYING you are. The rest of the United States does it - you can too.

I am not a broker/agent, and I have no allegiance to any of them. I am speaking from the perspective of an actual buyer with excellent credit and financials looking for an actual coop/condo to buy outside of the gentrified areas of Brooklyn - the very buyer you pray for. And, from where I sit, you people suck.

well put. my friend use to own 740 prospect btwn franklin & bedford listed with that "3%" company... it sat for 6mths w/o offers and NO traffic, but on the one occation there was a showing, the listing agent called to tell my friend that he was 'sending' someone over and showed the place himself... he was pissed!

my bud asked me to call and pretend to be a buyer... they wouldnt answer any of my questions or put me through to the listing agent until i gave them a ton of personal info first.

the day their exclusive expired, they finally co-broked with a century21 agent who had a buyer... come to find out, they'd been callin about the house for close to two months w/o a response from the listing agent.

    co-broking... awesome!
    bad agents... line'em up!!!
