FIDO announcement to dogs their owners who enjoy Pros.
We've beat the Winter - It's finally Spring!
But we need your help getting the word out about off-leash rules. By doing so you insure that Prospect Park will be a safe, healthy place for dogs & their owners as well as other park users.
We'll be handing out orange flyers....
DOGS MUST BE ON-LEASH - ALL THE TIME HERE:
--TRAILS BETWEEN MEADOWS
--WOODED AREAS AND WATERWAYS
--BALL FIELDS
$100 fine per dog!
The woods are full of nesting ground birds and burrowing creatures. Show that you appreciate nature by leashing up when required. Report dog owners who flagrantly violate woodland rules by notifying the park enforcement authorities at 718 437 1350. It’s the responsible thing to do
Staying off the Ball Fields at all times is new with the passage of legal off-leash in NYC. However, Prospect Park offers over 100 acres of designated open meadows for dogs & their owners. There’s no other urban park quite like it! Off-Leash Hrs: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Frequently Stated Excuses...
"My dog loves to chase squirrels!"
Don't ever consider letting your dog hunt - there's absolutely no reason for it. It's the last thing woodland creatures expect from urban park goers. See someone putting their dogs over the fence? Do the right thing and call the above number. All they do is give those of us who've worked so hard to make off-leash work a bad reputation.
"But most wooded trails are fenced in!"
Unexpectedly encountering unleashed dogs within the confines of the fenced in wooded trails can be enough to give someone who is afraid of dogs a heart attack...
"Ball fields are deserted during off-leash hours!"
Not much longer. While dogs do far less harm to the grass than soccer players, the meadows need time to recover. As the weather warms up there will be an influx of Pee Wee teams (one of which FIDO sponsors) during weekends. With little kids comes food and... balls! Get the picture? Take the perimeter paths around the ball fields and give the 9th street path some breathing room as well. The idea is to have fun with your dog....
Enough said.

Good to know about the ball fields. I didn't know that. Thanks.

Hey FIDO Dude,
When are you going to get around to cashing the check I sent you in November?
It's been almost 4 months.

you're welcome! yeah, i admit i've been guilty of this myself, esp. on weekday mornings. but with the law in place, it'll be impossible to talk your way out of getting a ticket if you're caught! better to be safe than $100 poorer! -
I always look forward to springtime in NYC, when all the dog shit starts to thaw out and the City is redolent of fecal matter.
-
wait, but i thought that evening off-leash hours began at 6! or 5! (i never knew which). has that changed?
-
yeah me too! i thought it began after 5pm!
-
yep, that's changed. when the off-leash rules went into law, the winter 5PM to 9AM went away to standardize the time year-round.
please don't get caught after hours (i.e. after 5!). overall we have a good relationship with the Parks Dept., but my gut tells me there will be more enforcement this season. -
But I thought there was an unofficial compromise on the Neathermead only after 5pm, and the parks dept would look the other way and not enforce the rule--? Or has that changed?
Howdy, Stranger!
