  • Subject: It was a shooting according to police

...don't know anything more at this point. Wating for the newscast.
  • My brother in law works near there and just got home he said he was told there was a shooting involving a teenager but the cops were not giving him any info so this is all second hand info.
  • Dont know what happened but helicopters were hovering above this evening, must be connected to the incident at that location.
  • Gothamist crime map says a homicide at 6:04 pm :(
  • an article about two Brooklyn murders yesterday in today's NYT
    THE NEW YORK TIMES wrote:
. . . a man was fatally shot on a busy street in Clinton Hill. The man, Leval Lyde, 36, was shot in the torso on Fulton Street near Vanderbilt Avenue around 4:50 p.m. and died at Brooklyn Hospital Center, the police said.

A cousin of Mr. Lyde’s who gave his name only as Moonie said that Mr. Lyde was a rapper. “He’s a kind person, a loving person,” he said.

The shooting was a reminder of rougher times in Clinton Hill, where gentrification has turned crack houses into wine bars.

One resident, Ben Fenton, said he came out of the subway after work and noticed that a new French restaurant had opened. Then he looked across the street and saw yellow police tape.

“I thought it was an accident,” he said. “The last thing I thought is that it was a shooting.”
Errol's site has more info about the dead man.

How very, very sad and tragic. Wasn't there a shooting the day before a block or two away?
Does anyone know why this happened. I mean, was it random or was he targeted for some reason?
    It's just not right. :(

Sadly, from all accounts it appears as if he was targeted.

Most shootings aren't random. There's usually an intended target, unfortunately this is with out regard for law abiding bystanders.

Police looking for killer of mother of three

Police were pressing their search Monday for the gunman who opened fire at a memorial party for a slain rapper and inadvertently struck and killed a young mother who had stopped to pay her respects.

Nancy Williams, 27, was killed early Sunday evening after leaving her Gates Avenue building and stopping next door at a party where people had gathered to pay tribute to Levlar "Cavlar" Lyde, 36, who was shot to death last Tuesday after leaving a Fort Greene seafood restaurant.

Moments after Williams arrived at the party – behind the building where Lyde lived -- someone opened fire, apparently from some distance away. About seven shots were fired, police said, and Williams was hit once in the chest. She died at Brookdale Hospital.

Williams had three children, all of whom were back home with their grandmother and great-grandmother when the shooting happened.
