Franklin Ave South of Eastern Parkway — Brooklynian

Franklin Ave South of Eastern Parkway

Hello Everyone! I am so happy to have found this forum. I've been completely addicted to it the last few days and finally decided to join. I have been living on Lincoln Pl between Franklin and Bedford since November. I absolutely love the neighborhood. Fisher's Market rules! I am moving April 15 down the street past Eastern Parkway to President and Franklin. I am currently living with roommates and found a great one bedroom for myself. I am wondering if anyone lives in that building (right on the southeast corner) or near Franklin on the south side? It seems like all the new places and structural improvements are happing on the north side of eastern parkway. I've been searching the forums for mention of the south side but all the posts are old. I found one from a year ago warning people about President and Franklin. What's it like living there now? (I have walked down the street by the way, just not at night or on a daily basis.) :D

  • hey there. a bunch of us are going to be planning a CH bar crawl (not sure if you're a drinker) shortly and we'll post the details to the board. if you don't mind hanging out in bars, you should join up - it's a great way to meet a bunch of people from the board and to meet a bunch of people in your neighborhood: last time we acquired some folks at various places which was super cool, and got tons of lurkers to come out!
  • Awesome. I am definitely up for a CH bar crawl. I look forward to meeting some locals. :D
  • I live in South Crown Heights as well, welcome to the area!

I walk down Franklin day and night... day time (mornings) it's all school kids rushing to class, night time it's much quieter. It's safe as anywhere, as far as I am concerned.

I think the Associated on Franklin is better than Fishers, but I am biased.

The south side is definitely not hyped-up in the same ways north crown heights is, and a lot of the news is posted in Prospect Lefferts Garden blogs. But there are some advantages and good things happening. You have better access to the park and the gardens, I'd get a membership to the garden if I were you! The area directly around the college is changing drastically with all the new construction. Make sure you walk up President st. some day and check out the mansions just east of Nostrand.
  • Thank you so much for your reply. This may seem like a ridiculous question, but where is the college? I haven't explored the entire area yet:) I definitely plan on getting a membership to the gardens! As soon as I have an address I can write down on the application. I'll have to check out the Associated. Fisher's is going organic. Maybe they'll also fix up their Pioneer market south of Eastern Pkwy.
  • Welcome to the south side!

The college is on Bedford down further. I personally don't like the corner you're moving to. I mean, the stores are cool (Yoon's market is great for fruits and veggies/ I LOVE LOVE LOVE the cleaners right next door/the 99 cents store people are nice/the corner bodega-EP and Franklin is cool/and then there's Sam's sandwich shop...he's awesome but the food is artery clogging).

The supermarkets, both the ones on Franklin (not Fishers) I think, are awful . There selection sucks and their prices are outrageous. I cross over the parkway and go to the Keyfood on Washington.

The reason I don't like that block is just that there's a lot of "stuff" going on there. There are a LOT of kids at school time (1 elementary, 1 school for the deaf, 2 high schools), that's not so much a problem until they get into fights, which happens regularly, but not any more than any other school, I imagine.

There's drugs and their dealers hanging out on those corners. They mind their own business so long as you mind yours. Are you female? If so, you may get a little more attention, but generally everyone's pretty respectful.

A while back (like 5-6 years ago) I used to call that area the shooting gallery. They don't shoot someone on the same side of the street. They cross the street and then shoot their target. Made for a Wild West sort a vibe.
Once I heard gunshots and I got a call from my neighbor who was completely out of breath. He was coming up the Franklin Av subway stop (our side, the south) and the shots were coming fast and furious. He and others from my building hauled ass and ran as fast as they could the half a block into our building. He had an amazing sense of humor and the way he told the story had me in stitches, but the fact was that that was a scary event. But its rare, which is why I remember it.

I hope this hasn't tarnished your joy over your new pad. I'm sure it'll be fine. Same mantra over again: Keep your wits about you, and you'll be ok!

Hope to see you at the Crawl!
  • Thanks for the info! Luckily I am gone during school hours. I've heard the Franklin subway stop is crazy when school lets out, but I don't get back from Manhattan until seven-thirty or eight most nights so I miss all of that. I hope it's not going to be too loud (from the street). I love my new apartment. It's huge and newly renovated. North Franklin has undergone major changes just in the last six months (since I've been on Lincoln) so maybe some of that will trickle down to the south side. Shootings, well, I experienced some of that in my last neighborhood. I was living in Echo Park in Los Angeles. Some near misses there as far as drive-bys. Of course I wasn't harassed as much. I'm Mexican so I fit in there. Here people holler "white girl" at me even though I'm not:) But being hollered at isn't dangerous, just annoying.
  • Yea, I've been waiting for that "trickle down" effect for 10 years. Sigh.
  • Where do you live in South CH?

I realized that I will be living approximately the same distance from Ebbet's Field as I was from Dodger stadium in L.A. Kinda ironic.
  • check your PM
  • I guess I need to check out the cleaners next to the 99 cent store! I do have a ton of shirts that need to be dry cleaned.

Anyway, I forgot to mention that Billy's pizza on Bedford (by the college) is also worth a visit. Best pizza in Crown Heights (north or south) IMHO. We'll see if anyone disagrees.
  • Cleaners is on the opposite side from the 99 cents store. They're right next to Yoon's Market. I am completely embarrassed that I've forgotten their names, because I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. They are just the nicest family!

The wife does a mean hem. and she's fast.

    Mariposa:

I lived at the corner of Franklin and President for quite a few years. (1010 President Street.)

It is quite a famous building for a number of reasons, not the least are its totally asymmetrical staircases on both sides of the building..If you Google "1010 President Street" you will find that it has its own website.

The bottom line is simple. The years over in that building were the best of my life. The people were wonderful and I had endless friends. I can't tall you haw envious I am of your new life in that part of town. s a matter of fact, I was there last month and took a great pic of the building as well as other buildings in the neighborhood.

Enjoy yourelf. it will be a great ride in a very happy part of town!

  • Thanks for the great response! I wanted to hear something positive:) That is exactly the building I am moving into, third floor. Supposedly the last tenant lived there for thirty years. I can't wait to check out the staircases. I only went there once, when I put down a deposit. I walked in and knew that was where I wanted to be. Do you still know people in the building? Why did you leave? I'd love to hear more about the street, the building, the history when you feel like reminiscing. I love hearing the old stories.

The building doesn't have its own website, but it is the "title" name of a website (www.brooklyn.net) that was created by man who lived there at one time. The info and pics are quaint and it acts as a walking tour guide from the 1010 address.
  • Subject: Correct...

    But...

It should have its own website!

In the days of me, and Victor and Jerry and the crazy lady and Mrs Bass...

    The list goes on.

I can tell you much about the building but not current. I left in 1968. I was 16. Moved to Canarsie. Hated it.

Honestly, it is a magical building.

RFK was assassinated the following month. Noting was quite the same after that...

  • the cleaners is "goody cleaners" and yes-- they do quite a good job. the 99cent store is fine for what it is. the bodega next to it is extremely shady but the laundromat is great. maiman's pharmacy may be an institution but it's kinda useless (unless you're in the mood to play $5 for a a dusty box of toothpaste).

our outpost of the Golden Crust patty shop is great, and they make a solid jerk chicken, if you get it fresh.

across the street, sal's is pretty much guaranteed food poisoning, but the corner bodega, in all it's shabbiness, is run by some really nice yemeni guys who make the best $3.25 turkey sandwich in the 'hood.

The pioneer market is getting better, they just replaced their freezers but the lingering scent of cesspool still remains by the meat section. always check your expiration dates there, but it's still a useable market, especially in combination with yoons and the greenmarket.

and we DO have real gentrification on this side: the subway shop! now granted, it's encased in bulletproof glass, but it's something.

Overall we've been on the corner of EP & Franklin for 7 years, it's home, and it's good to see it moving from absolute bedlam and chaos (homeless lady getting tossed off the roof of our building, gunshot going through our bedroom window) to something bordering on stability. where it goes from here is anyone's guess.

I have to defend Sal's- not that I eat there on a regular basis (I can probably count how many times on one hand) but I've never gotten sick there and know of no one who has. In fact, the kids go there both in the mornings and afternoon's take over the place, so actually, the food never sits long enough to catch germs. But like I said, you will need to go on some kind of medication afterwards as your heart will likely try to stop in the event of eating one of their tasty yet unbelievably unhealthy bacon, egg, and cheese.

As for the Subway shop- yea, that was a shame. When they first opened up, they had no bullet proof glass, then they got robbed like 3 times in first 2 weeks. Then they put up the glass.
  • Yeah, the Subway guys actually told me the ownership mandated the glass, even though they preferred not. They didn't say anything about being robbed however.

The last time I was in Pioneer they still had a bucket of raw chicken sitting in the meat aisle.

As meat goes, Western Beef is awesome! The butchers there will cut you thick steaks etc. if you ask. Otherwise you can get primal cuts of fillets, shell steaks and ribs. I've seen people post about wanting a good butcher in the area (like Piasano's), but I'd take Western Beef any day. It may not be aged beef but it is good. Especially with BBQ season approaching!

I still don't know why people don't like the Associated for everyday stuff. Never had a complaint, although I don't buy meat there.

i thought those were pickled pork tails?

regardless-- not on my shopping list.

I lived on Carroll and Washington Ave. What a great time I had growing up there. They did have a great website, but nothing has been added in years. I know my postings were on there. Did u go to P.S. 241?
  • Subject: Loved growing up on President Street

Reading all these makes me remember what it was like to grow up on President Street.

I lived in 1030 and my cousin lived in 1010 back in the mid-60's.

Nothing but friends and family all day and all night.

Playing stoop ball, ring-a-lerio, kick the can, playing in the "Childrens Jungle", the "Jewish School Yard", having Dr Moscowitz walk across the street to make a house call!!!

    Can't beat that
