Parking spot temporarily? — Brooklynian

Parking spot temporarily?

Hi all.

I've got a car in the neighborhood, that I've regretted having since I brought it here the first time, but I've been waiting on the pink slip for a while in order to sell it. I hate alternate side parking, but I've been able to work within the system pretty effectively.

The problem
: I'm leaving town Wednesday and coming back Saturday night, thus running into the issue of ticketing and/or towing on Thursday if I leave my car where it is. Naturally, that doesn't sound too great.

The solution? Does somebody have a non-street parking spot that I could use for this length of time (or even just Friday and Saturday? I could probably get my roommate to move it one morning, but it's such a hassle that I don't want to ask them to do it more than once.) Or does anybody know somewhere in the boroughs or shortly into LI that I could leave it (fairly safely) without it getting ticketed/towed? I don't really have money, otherwise a super expensive garage would be an option. Other ideas?

Thanks in advance!

-Zach

  • Do you have a friend that you could just let borrow it for while you're gone? Make it worth someone's while, you know?

As for spots- nothing in my nabe.

All my friends in this area also live in the city and don't really have a need for a car, unfortunately. I was thinking about offering that on here, but I don't know how good an idea that is.
  • Are there any streets near you that are Monday or Tuesday alternate side? If you're gone from Wed - Sat, you could just park it there... Don't know if it helps, but many of the streets in N. Slope like around Union - 4th or so b/w 4th and 7th aves are Monday/Tues -- maybe you could leave it there and then take the subway home...

Yeah, thanks. I'm wondering whether there are any places (maybe N. Slope?) that are ONLY one day a week. In Prospect/Crown Heights, they appear to be either Monday/Thursday or Tuesday/Friday.

yeah, there are mon/tuesday only spots on Sterling once you cross over Flatbush into North Slope. Probably other streets too.
  • As was previously mentioned you can drive over to PS or Windsor Terrace where there is alternate side only two days a week rather than four.

If you don't mind paying for a spot there are a couple of garages in the nabe you can try and negotiate a price with to give you a space for a couple of days. There's one on NY Avenue bet Pacific and Atlantic and another on Sterling between Nostrand and Rodgers. I've done this several times and it worked out okay.

If none of these work, park it on Tuesday night on the legal side for Thursday. That way you are okay Wednesday and Thursday and roomie only has to move it once for Friday ASS.
  • I too own a car in the neighborhood and have had the best success with parking my car in the Park Slope are where they have once a week parking restrictions.

Take a look at the parking holiday list as well as you can sometimes mix your parking in with some obscure holiday to get an extended benefit.

Once I even parked my car in Queens off the end of the 7 train where there was no alternate side of the street parking. It can be a hike and quite the long train ride home, but you get the comfort that you didn't miscount your days.

I've also loaned my car to a friend for a week, but because they weren't use to the alternate side of the street rules, they were on the wrong side of the street and it got ticketed and towed.
  • Is it worth $45 to you to be able to park while you're away? How about $32? Seems like a small price to pay for parking from Wed. to Sat.

So just park anywhere, Mon/Thurs street cleaning or Tues/Fri. Either way you get one ticket - you won't get towed. $45 for the ticket. Go online and request a hearing by mail and they'll reduce it to $32.

Seems like the easiest solution to me. You also said you could get your roommate to move it once so if you do that you won't get any tickets, park in a Friday spot and have him/her move it to the thurs. spot.
