worst lunch ever
I wanted to try Sette (corner of 3rd and 7th ave) for a while now. my friend and i went for their $10 lunch special. I started w/ the parmesian fritters. ICK. Tasted like a nasty ball of uncooked dough. no flavor other than FRIED.
Then I ordered what was supposed to be a pannini. Proscuitto, motz cheese and roasted red pepper. what i got was some sort of old, dried up ham and green peppers (mind you, I hate green peppers and wouldn't have ordered it if that's what it was supposed to come with). Tasted gross, i took the inside out and just ate the bread. My friend asked for a piece of bread to go with her dish and they didn't have any bread to offer her (they could have cut a piece of the bread they use for panninis but they didn't). then i ordered a decaf coffee (coffee and tea are part of the meal) took them over 20 minutes to make the coffee.
needless to say, i thought it was a terrible meal.
I also didn't like that someone other than the waitress came over to take the money but we told him we paid already (the money was the tip) and he picked up the tip and put it in a box (while we were still sitting at the table) The place was not crowded and it wasn't like they needed the table for someone. I just thought he could have waited till we were up. just my own pet peeve.
I don't understand why a place like that makes it but other better places close. I've had better sandwiches at subway. if you want a great pannini go to press 195 on 5th ave near union..awesome!

Subject: thats too bad...
Sounds like you were there on an off day...
I have had the lunch special numerous times. I have always found it a great value for the quality and amount of food served. The $2 supplement for the scallop dish is well worth it.
Surprised they wouldnt give you bread. My meals there have always started with good bread and olive oil.
I would be happy they took the time to brew me fresh decaf, thought they should have indicated how long you'd have to wait.
Collecting the tip while you sat is plain rude. I have always found that the wait staff seems bitter they have to work a cheapie lunch shift. -
check out some other posts/links about the awfulness of Sette!
i for one have ALWAYS been disappointed after having gone there.
not only do they not give you the price of the specials (which run up to $23 for a simple pasta) but the service is crappy, the food well below mediocre and the prices ridiculous for the lack of quality food.
it used to be run and have a head chef that was fabulous but ever since she/they left it's merely gone down hill.
for good italian, other than the near impeccable al di la, i'd recommend the new spot that just opened on 3rd ave and 9th st. they are open late (midnight m-t and 1 on the weekends), have delicious appetizers, great deserts, wine and pizza and pastas. And the wait staff are super cool as well.
We've been there twice in the past 2 weeks! -
hey chaplin's mom...where would i find other posts?

do a search (top of page) for "sette"

The Italian place on 10th and 7th isn't bad either. I gorged on some oxtails on top of polenta for lunch and it was pretty good. Has anyone been to Tonio's lately? Is it still decent for a red sauce joint?
As an aside I also hit the new bbq joint on 3rd Ave and 6th Street. Not bad. He has the seasoning and moisture right he just needs to get some more hardwood action going. Funky intrerior too. -

I think you mean Scalino on 7th/10th. Been there 2x - decent food, and a BYOB policy (yes!)

Unless something has changed (haven't been in a few months), they are BYOB and I don't recall a corkage fee. I'm sure they'll verify if you call and ask -
I wouldn't say Sette is awful. I've had several enjoyable dinners there. I do think that, if you're going to open a nicer Italian spot in the same neighborhood as Al Di La, you had better BRING IT, and Sette's yet another neighborhood place that does well, but not well enough.
