I love that idea alafairnadia! The only problem is, most of these cowards who do these types of things run in packs... One on one, I can do some damage against almost anyone, female OR male(Hiiii-ya! Miss Piggy style! ), BUT... if there are a bunch of them or they have a weapon, there really isn't any point in putting yourself in danger.
I know that things could be a lot worse and things ARE a lot worse in other neibs, states and countries for that matter but it still depresses me that this shit happens here. No human should be attacking another period. And for things as stupid as ipods or a few bucks... it's just sad. -
I really socked to hear something like that happened. I've always felt pretty safe there. There's always people in the train and on the platform. My experience is that the trouble makers are usually the young guys who walk around groups. Other than that BK is a FABULOUS place to live!!!!

I know the victim.
He was walking back from the subway at about 9:30pm, on EP between Franklin and Classon. The sidewalk was not empty; people were walking home and it felt safe.
A man walking towards him on the Shuttle overpass smacked him in the face with a very sharp elbow and then demanded his wallet and backpack. He was apparently aided by another man. A witness approached the victim and gave him his phone number and said that he could identify the attackers.
The victim's injuries were/are fairly serious. Several bones were broken in his face. He required reconstructive surgery and several nights in the hospital. A full physical recovery is expected. -
First, condolences to the victim. That is some messed up stuff there.
Second, for those of you playing along at home, how many times have we heard this same story at this same stop? This one is a bit later than usual, but otherwise, very similar. I would need multiple hands to count the number of times someone has gotten hit in the head between say 5pm and 10pm coming out of this station in full view of witnesses. Are law enforcement tracking this? I have yet to see cops standing around there. And I'm not disparaging the police or saying they don't, I'm just saying that I haven't seen it. Have you? I have seen a LOT of cops at the Nostrand exit. Commonly three to six or more standing around within a block or so. And I don't hear about these muggings there. I realize there are limited resources, and perhaps we are looking at a shell game, cops move to this station, robbers move to that one. Etc. Lather, rinse, repeat. I dunno.
Sucks to hear this though. -
They actually do have cops regularly there (they even up their numbers when school lets out for the day), so maybe they wait for them to walk away before they strike.

Cool glad to hear that.
Well, not the latter part.
That part sucks.
But the part at the beginning?
Well, that is good. -
I would say 3 out of 5 weeknights there are police officers directly outside the Franklin Ave. subway exit between 5pm and 8pm. On almost every night, I walk past an officer or two between the subway and my apartment on St. Marks and Franklin Ave. I would venture that these dudes have figured out the patrol patterns of the beat cops on Franklin and strike when they are farthest away (i.e. all the way up towards Dean and Pacific).
In addition, while Franklin is very well patrolled, the side streets can be a different story. Think about it. As a beat cop, you have almost a straight line of vision all the way up and down Franklin and can probably identify when a commotion (mugging) is occurring. But if a cop is on Park for instance, and a mugger hits someone on Prospect, you are a full block away and cannot see/hear anything.
Anyway, these are things I would think about if I was to plan to mug someone and didn't want 5-0 to catch me. As a civilian, I don't really know what the solution is, if there is one. Anybody care to chime in? -
how about walking in groups - kind of like pedestrian carpooling ?
it seems like the only reasonable thing for the civilian-side to do is to just learn how to protect ourselves better and know what to watch out for.
or we could just all ride bikes- -
I don't think we have (or will) reached the level of pedestrian carpooling, but it is an amusing thought.

As far as personal safety, I feel that the biggest thing is to maintain awareness. I've rarely read one of these instances where someone wasn't taken unaware/by surprise in some manner.
As far as catching the crooks, that is the part I don't know. -
To put my own two cents in here, the victim in this case was indeed caught unaware, but no more than anyone else would have been. He wasn't on the phone, and his attackers walked towards him as would anyone else down the sidewalk. One of them swerved in front of him just as they were about to pass and whacked him in the face. What could he have done to prevent this? Not much, besides cross the street so as to avoid passing anyone on the sidewalk, and that seems like a rather extreme form of prevention.
On a side note, it appears that the police have no record of this assault, even though they took a report after it occurred. It is really angering to feel lost in the system, and that even the police can't look after you. -
Subject: Find them...
and kill them.
Sends a good message and they don't do it again.
Not a racial thing. If they were white, black, Asian or from Mars.
Violence, like French, is a language. Many speak only that language so talking with them in another is a fools errand.

Subject: Don't Move to Crown Heights
I moved to Crown Heights a few months ago, and it was the worst decision of my life. Girls--its not safe! Guys--if you want your girlfriend to be able to come visit without getting followed and harassed and robbed, dont move to Crown Heights. The end. -

First off, I don't agree with this. Secondly, in what general cross streets are you? -
Subject: Huh?
With all the crime talk that goes back and forth on this board, I don't usually feel bothered to reply. But as a youngish woman in this neighborhood I feel I need to speak up. I have lived here 4 months (admittedly not long) but have never been harrassed. Not once. Short of a very drunk older man offering to carry my groceries, which was kind of funny.
Not to say it doesn't ever happen, but it's not fair to feed into people's anxieties this way. Something is amiss with the earlier post. I feel very comfortable in CH as a woman. And contrary to the annoyingly fancy neighborhood where I work (59th and Lex), I have yet to be whistled at, catcalled, or suspiciously bumped into. -

Yea, don't agree. I'm a woman, been living here for a decade, only been bugged ONCE the whole time (I cursed him out and the next day he was sweet as pie).
Are you looking to move, I hope? Cause if you're walking around with a big V on your head... -
Yeah, I'm going to chime in, too. Lived here for seven months, never been bothered. If anything, I've had a LOT of people offer to help me with my groceries.
This neighborhood isn't the safest, but it's far from a dangerous jungle either. And it just sounds like one of those times where Shit Happens. From the way the event was described, I can't see how the victim could have defended himself from such a blitzkrieg attack.
I suppose pedestrian-pooling is an idea. It's for this reason why I don't like coming home late at night via subway, because there is no foot traffic when you get out. All the stores are closed. I know I would feel safer if there was a 24-hour bodega on the corner. Thankfully, I get a car home from my job.
