brooklyn animal foster network

is this true?
As you most certainly know, through no fault of our own, the Brooklyn Animal Foster Network, which has tirelessly served the community and its homeless animals for years, remains suspended from saving further animals from the New York City kill shelter system (NYCACC). Many other groups and rescuers have also been banned.

  • Subject: Fostering animals

Why would that be? I mean, if you are willing to remove an animal, save it's life and find it a home, why in the world would they shut you down??
It'd save the city money for food while holding the animals as well as the most base saving money used to put the poor creatures down.
To have good people such as the ones on this board be denied to give something special of themselves to help and animal is truly one of the most ridiculous things ever.
What a bunch of boobs!! :x
  • for the sake of argument (since I have no information whatsoever about this organization), what if the organization which wanted to remove animals from the city facilities lacked the financial and other resources necessary to house and feed them properly and humanely while trying to place them in caring homes, so that the animals were starving, developing skin lesions, etc?

Wouldn't that justify precluding them from taking animals from city facilities?

yeah, but everything on CL gets flagged for no reason, all the time, so i don't know that this means it's not valid
  • Subject: dakotas way

I used the link to write to Mayor Bloomberg. Maybe if enough people drown him with e-mails he'll remove Charlene Pedrolie and put an animal person with a heart and a brain in her place.
Is this cross posted on all of the boards for maximum viewing and response?
    Good luck.
  • There have been multiple posts regarding these folks over the past few years, so just run a search to get the history.

Yes, do a search. BAFN has a mixed reputation. Many people, including me, could tell you horror stories about its director.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume that BAFN is in the right here. At a minimum, people should do some research before "drowning" the mayor with emails in protest.
  • Subject: foster care for dogs

I wasn't only discussing BAFN. It looked like 6 other organizations besides that one were not allowed to take on animals to foster for adoption. I'd have to wonder if those groups were not caring for the animals as well or was this a blanket move by Charlene Pedrolie to cut costs. But it still doesn't make sense if you have groups that do care for the animals and are willing to remove them from the shelter it will save on the budget for care, feeding and euthanization anyway. So why would this move be a positive one for anyone, most of all the dogs that are being killed and not cared for by the city??
Are you saying all of the 6 groups are lumped into the same negative group with the horror stories you say you have first hand knowledge of from BAFN?

    Would you elaborate for me?

I believe the truth is somewhere in the middle. I have been barraged by BAFN emails about this issue and my guess is that the new animal control director sucks but BAFN is not totally blamefree. I too have had negative dealings with BAFN and I respect the great work they do. But you do NOT adopt out sick dogs or cats without fully informing the potential new owners what they are in for (both emotionally and financially). You do NOT adopt out a dog to a family if the dog has a history of aggression. I love animals but I love people too and I understand not everyone is up for caring for a pet that needs medical care or wants to risk their child with an aggressive dog. You do NOT take money from people under the pretense that you will then take in a feral cat and then suddenly say you cannot because you have no room. Just my experience--could be an anomoly but I think if BAFN were a little more sympathetic to the needs of humans (we are animals too), they would be a top notch organization

Clearly you have no experience working in an animal shelter. As someone who HAS, I'll walk you through it.

Sometimes animals appear 100% healthy while at the shelter. There are many health problems that don't appear until later. Apparently you expect shelters to be psychic and foresee all problems down th road. If you love your pet you will do everything in your power to make it healthy. I know it may make you feel better to use the shelter as a scapegoat for your problems, but sometimes things just happen.

Aggression is the same way. Sometimes certain things trigger the animal. If they never experience that particular trigger, they may not display any signs of aggression while at the shelter.

Oh, and space? Shelters aren't unlimited. Things come up. Space is a premium in shelters. So guess what? Sometimes there ISN'T room. I'm sure the shelter does everything it can to find room for needy animals, but there is a point where they will be maxed out. Sorry if that means you can't get rid of the mild inconvenience of having a feral cat around, but sometimes you just have to adapt.

Do us all a favor. Go volunteer in a shelter. Then come back in a few weeks and tell us what you see. Also, keep in mind that what you see as a volunteer is only a small percent of what you'd see if you worked there or ran the place.

I have no sympathy for anyone Ms Bleier may have been "abrasive" with. I've been abrasive with people too. Why? Because they were terrible potential owners and incredibly rude to me. Meaning they gave me a reason and were "abrasive" first.

How about next time you think she's being mean to you, you ask yourself why instead of crying to her boss or starting a lawsuit. At least then you won't be personally responsible for the deaths of hundreds (thousands?) of innocent animals.
  • Subject: Firstly, thank you for coming to our defense.

The number of abandoned and owner "surrendered" companion animals at NYCACC's 3 kill shelters is up 4.5 percent in the first four months of this year.

As foreclosure signs spring up across NYC, so has the number of unwanted pets.

Animal-control officers say they are finding more and more pets abandoned in vacated homes and backyards.

In response to this crisis, the new Executive Director of NYCACC continues to indiscriminately ban many rescuers from removing cats and dogs from the shelter's euthanasia list. We assume it is cheaper to kill them.

Additionally, she has thrown out more "top of the line crates" which has resulted in the halving of holding capacity of adoptable animals at Brooklyn's Linden Blvd. Center.

There have been 17 resignations of top-tier employees including Vets and the Director of Operations. Reports of abusive behavior on her part abound.

Please sign the petition to remove Charlene Pedrolie from her position and lets bring back the Mayor's No Kill Mandate today.

  • Wow- thanks so much for this info- I had no idea, and I'm livid. I sent emails to my friends asking them to sign.
  • Recently I had a pretty unpleasant experience with BAFN, but I'm not sure where to recount it. I think I should, though; had I encountered such a story I would never have adopted an animal from the organization. I'll be brief:

Adopted kitten this past summer. Took it home, discovered on same day that it was coughing. Checked the documentation BAFN had given me to see whether vet had signed off on kitten's health and discovered the papers belonged to a different animal. Within two days my adult cat contracted the kitten's illness, which the vet told me was a respiratory infection. Treatment for two cats cost more than $250.

I phoned Ms. Bleier and told her this story. In view of the fact that I'd had to pay an additional $250 caring for the cat whose health she'd vouched for (remember, the papers she gave me belonged to a cat with totally different markings), I asked her to waive the $100 adoption fee. At first, she took a concliatory tone, asking me if I could find it in my heart to absorb the $250. Then she shifted gears and claimed that the kitten had been in perfect health when she'd given it to me--in other words, that it had gotten sick en route to my apartment three blocks away on an 80-degree day. Then she called me a "cheap-ass." Then she hung up on me.

Please be forewarned. There's a reason the city doesn't want to do business with this person.
  • While your story is sad (if you check this site there's a thread all about BAFN), THIS particular thread was NOT about the city not wanting to deal specifically with BAFN. It was with practically ALL the rescue groups in the city. There's a new woman in charge over there at CACC and she's a monster from what I've read and heard about from other rescuers.

Her name is CHARLENE PEDROLIE and she's a douche!
  • And the hits just keep on coming for the Laurie Bleier and the BAFN. This is totally in line with my personal experience with her.
  • wow, this brings up quite the list if you google it....
  • oh, i'm going to enjoy this.

ditto. I'm starting to think we need a whole board devoted to BAFN
  • lets title the board "the accident you can't look away from".

It's kinda like watching boxing, only evenryone knows who will win.

(in boxing, only the boxers, promoters and a few bettors know who will win...)
  • I'm ready mofos
  • Damn.

Ok , so , here we go altogether now!

"Three blind mice, three blind mice,
See how they run, see how they run,
They all ran after the farmer's wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife,
Did you ever see such a thing in your life,
    As three blind mice?"
  • Seriously folks, nothing to see here. Y'all waiting for a fight that ain't gonna happen.
  • people get tired of bashing BAFN? ...damn, I guess we'll have to go back to killing noobs.
