So, for all the queers and queer lovers and people who love those that are queer: What music does a ProHo-er suggest whilst having a nervous breakdown....?

humourous (and non-humourous) advice is highly suggested///

  • Nervous breakdown of what variety?!
  • like, the blues.....capisce?
  • oh...

    hmmm...

Well, if it's relationship trouble, I'd say that you should steer slear of Train in Vain, The Clash... no Rumors, Fleetwood Mac, either... (incidentally, Stevie Nicks is on my short list of people-that-I-just-might-assault-if-I-met-them-in-a-dark-alley)

That's a tough one- what would you rather be feeling?! I find angry music quite agreeable when beset with the blues...

    Lay up:

The Smiths -- "The Queen Is Dead"

    Humorous lyric:

So I broke into the palace
With sponge and a rusty spanner
She said "Eh, I know you
    And you cannot sing."
    I said "That's nothing
You should hear me play piano."

    Non-humorous lyric:

    Take me out tonight
Take me anywhere, I don't care
    I don't care, I don't care
    And in the darkened underpass
I thought Oh God, my chance has come at last
(But then a strange fear gripped me and I
    Just couldn't ask)

My advice is to do something rash, but not furtive.

    Be happy.
  • yeah, i feel like pooping on someone's car or doing something rash like that....alas, no enemies I have are that deserving....

ah, the Smiths.....let me pop (not poop) that in right now....

nybt....makin' note...and I'm doin' the downloads right now.....

    ain't nothing but a nyc-life thing.....no boy things...nuthin'....just dat....
  • Cocteau Twins (esp. Heaven or Las Vegas), Joan Armatrading, Leonard Cohen, REM (first 3 records), Hole (first), Nirvana, John Coltrane, Miles Davis (Some Kind of Blue) Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Frank Sinatra, Lotta Lenya;
Soundtracks: West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Oh Brother Where Art Thou ...
I'm not queer, but am a chick who's a queer lover. This is the music I like to listen to when I'm depressed. I like to sing & cry along to the music.
  • How about drinking, or is that too obvious? Personally, when I'm down, I watch the movie Elf. I know it sounds stupid, but Will Ferrell kills me. Maybe you should go out .. Cattyshack is (almost) in the neighborhood now.

  • if you're thinking of offing it, i'd steer clear of all billie holiday.

but if you're just having a quotidian breakdown, you might feel an affinity for "wish you were here." not sure how gay that is though.. . . except for "have a cigar," which clearly. . . ahem. . . may be what the doctor ordered.

    (nice picks, flute!)

Very true. But if you just want to wallow in self pitty for a while, Billie can be just the ticket.
I am guilty of engaging in this unproductive & self-absorbed activity from time to time.
  • Subject: for depressed queer listening pleasure.....

Wow, how did I miss this post? :?: Except for the fact that I haven't been on the board much in the past few months.

That being said, being a queer myself, a musical crackhead and a recent dumpee, I have myself a breakup playlist in iTunes. And my truest virgo tendencies came out aplenty in the creation of said playlist, as it is organized into the stages of grieving a relationship passed. Some of my favorites in the very long mix (and yes, you will note my musical crackheadedness) are:

A Letter to Elise- The Cure
    Second Hand News- Fleetwood Mac
Another one Bites the Dust- Queen
    99 Problems- Jay-Z
I'll Dry My Tears- Etta James
What Do You Hear in these Sounds- Dar Williams
    Fools Like Me- Lisa Loeb
There's No Getting Over Me- Ronnie Milsap
    Untouchable Face- Ani DiFranco
    Good, Bad, Ugly- Ani DiFranco
    I Know- Kim Richey
I Just Might Be- Lorrie Morgan
    Fighter- Christina Aguilera
Give Me All Your Lovin or I Will Kill You- Macy Gray
    I'm Alright- Kim Richey
    Heart of Stone- Erasure
What Have I Done to Deserve This- The Pet Shop Boys
I'm Gonna Lock My Heart and Throw Away the Key- Billie Holliday
Love Me or Leave Me- Nina Simone
One For My Baby- Etta James
    Stay or Leave- Dave Matthews
    My Happy Ending- Avril Lavigne
I Fall to Pieces- Patsy Cline
    Hear Me Out- Frou Frou
    Stronger- Britney Spears
Its Bad You Know- R.L. Burnside

i am all for musical therapy.
  • Is a lonely hearts club in the works? ;) Gawd, thanks to everyone for the wonderful songlists.....

I came across a great album by Antony and the Johnsons, my favorite song being, "Hope There's Someone"...if you haven't heard it, I highly recommend downloading it or buying the cd....great lyrics for a cold winter's day.....

And, regarding a trip to Cattyshack....I have some issues...a group of friends and I attempted to go on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, hoping to catch a glimpse of the new place, but were blown away when we were asked to pay $5 to listen/sing karaoke or $8 to be upstairs with the DJ (when there were probably 8 people in the bar?) is it always like this? We refused to go and headed to Excelsior....damn, I wish there were more venues for folks like moi;)

I generally love Cattyshack, but I went there one Thursday with friends and they made us pay a $10 cover only to let us into an empty club. Seriously there were maybe 5 other patrons in the entire place other than us. I was none too happy.

whoa. that is NOT cool.

I know. It sucks because Cattyshack is the only good dancing I can find within a reasonable distance. (Though admittedly I have still not made it to Starlight -- Perhaps time for another DH outing there. :D )

I'm not sure I can define Starlight as good dancing. but it is a good time, with dancing. :)

my dear, dear friend and fellow PH resident christopher (the don) runs this karaoke night, and i went just last week. at least then, it was free to get in, and $5 only if you wanted to sing. and it was pretty packed, too. if you were there, i was the drunk girl barely singing "barracuda" by heart. thanks.

I was gonna say... I don't think I have ever paid a cover for Catty... except for the occassional lame ass Brooklyn Pride party. And quite frankly, given how bad the music is, I don't think I would really want to. I go to Cattyshack often enough. Maybe it depends on how late you go. I tend to wind up there early and stay late so maybe why that has worked for me.
  • as for music, i'd say a lot of Rufus Wainwright. he's brilliant.
  • So for the other person that was charged to get into Cattyshack--are you a guy or a girl? Just curious, because they let a group of girls in for free, but I'm (hopefully) assuming they'd already paid. Yeah, when my group of friends and I tried to go, there were a total of 10 people in the karaoke lounge....I wasn't about to pay that price....I'm not dissing karaoke, cause when the beer flows, I can do some mean renditions...of what, I usually can't recall

So, when did some DH's go to Starlight? I'm assuming the one in Crown Heights? I want to go! ;)

    LIES! All LIES!

Either that, or you better not try to weasel out next time I invite you to go do karaoke, bub!

yep, that Starlight. we went a few months ago. I met a great guy there - he took off his shirt and screamed in my ear. I'm guessing he didn't really know how to make girls pay attention. but the chick bartender there pours really heavy and everyone was really nice and funny. I can't wait to go back.

    girl.
  • asking on behalf of my wife: would a bunch of admittedly laid-back, cool, straight chicks have any trouble going to Cattyshack if they just wanted to go dancing in the neighborhood?

you'd think that with the Gowanus industrial buildings lying around, you might be able to get a decent club somewhere this side of the river, but apparently not.

hmm, this might be time for a new topic.
