What's up with the new look, Brooklynian.com?
Subject: What's up with the new look, Brooklynian.com?
Glad you asked. For the longest time, we have wanted to make better use of the main page, which frankly was a complete waste of space. Now, finally, in addition to the usual board index and activity, the page has a running log of every new post, regardless of forum, so you can keep better tabs on what's happening without having to click, click, click through every dang page. From a mod/admin standpoint, it's already been a quantum leap forward in being able to instantly detect and delete board spam (and other undesirable posting behavior), so hopefully you'll at least appreciate a Brooklynian even more devoid of spam than it was in the past!
This new index is pretty beta... so we'll leave it up for the weekend and see what happens. If you encounter any problems or errors, leave a message in this thread.
And NO, we have NOT taken away any of the important functions of the home page - all the info on new posts, updated forums, etc. should be showing up in the right hand column (giving you an idea of how much wasted space there was on the old page.
Happy Posting! -DH

The PMs are coming fast and furious. Thanks for the suggestions.
One feature for the future is a "pick your layout" option so you can move around the columns the way you want to see them.
This is just a beta, and certainly nothing thought through extensively or set in stone, so PLEASE DO keep the feedback coming. -
anybody else having a problem with display of the new main page? the neighborhood boards list overlaps the links list (i think) so nothing is readable.
is this a FF problem, or just me? -
what browser and type of computer are you using?
-
Me too, on 2 different computers.
Home: new Mac on the Safari browser
Work: PC on firefox browser
but had issues with overlapping -

Me too - except just Firefox. I cannot figure out how to get to just the PH board and when I click on the neighborhood section it brings me back to the main page. Its a little hard to navigate/understand for us 'puter illeterates

Edit to add - I now see the index all the way to the right but the whole screen is shifted to the right so I have a complete blank column on the left (am I making sense?) -
yes, overlap
like that movie about the massive car pile-up outside Paris...Le Weekend
I sent you a screenshot
FF2 here, on le non-panoramic Mac
p.s. I just made this a Global since that's where the discussion is... -
ok, we'll resume this later... back to the usual front page for now. Thanks for the help troubleshooting it.

Ewwwww.....
Vista AND IE?!!!!!
So wrong on so many levels....

I rely on Posts since last visit (currently just above the index, on the right) as my way to check in here.
I hope we get to keep that function, even if latest posts are on the front page.

Same weird overlappy stuff as before. I just emailed you a screencap.
-
ok, it must be something specifically with the link list. I'll get to it later today.
-
i'm getting the crappy new screen. the layout looks horrible. the forums looks like the front page
. -
me too. it's teh suck (sorry, I know you're working hard on this)
-
Looks pretty bad for me, too (over lapping text, confusing layout). I'm using XP and Firefox 2.0.0.13.

I'm using Firefox. I'm having trouble with the layout too. Looks like a CSS stylesheet is missing perhaps?
It's really hard to find the list of topics in the neighborhood boards. I had to click on the neighborhood board link on the front page, and then taken to a list of new messages for that neighborhood board. I had to click one of the messages to get into a thread, which is in the old format. Then from there I could use the old format links at the top of the thread to get into the neighborhood board list of topics. -
feedback: navigation needs work
-
yes its back to normal thank you

As to the ? below. No i don't see the overlapping anymore on my mac but you still have ads in the middle of the page and the fonts are too large on the headers. Not too mention that it's trying to look like the daily slope, when this is really a board page not a recap newsletter, for lack of a better word.
Sorry, but it's just not easy to use for us regulars. -
Can anybody look at this page and let me know if you are still seeing the overlapping text issue:

looks normal to me daily. i'm on fire fox.
-
OK, so maybe I stamped out the overflow bug. Anyone else? This page: http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/index2.php

No overlapping. Not purty, but not overlapping.
I'm curious - any way to take advantage of a wider monitor? I've got about 4" of unused space on each side of the screen... -
oh i got a wide screen.

well, that's the opposite problem from what I've been hearing - that the layout (at 970 pixels) is too wide. I think eventually, the wish list would include a "layout options" page that lets you choose widescreen, small screen, board list on the left, etc. -
It's looking better...more organized and easier to navigate.
-
now the index looks kinda suckie. more like the front page
. i like the old index better. -
thanks
daily!!!
