Where are the bars, clubs, restaurants that have dancing? — Brooklynian

Where are the bars, clubs, restaurants that have dancing?

Doesn't matter what kind of dancing. I'm interested in trying to establish a regular swing/social dance in Brooklyn so it has to be a place that has a cabaret license.

TIA

  • The best dance place I know of in Park Slope is Cattyshack on 4th and I think President or so. Maybe Garfield....

    Great spot.
  • Thanks, I'll check it out.

I don't really care so much about the dancing that they offer just that they have a cabaret license and have 1 night that is really slow for them
  • We should note that Cattyshack is a lesbian bar (although I've gone there with many [other] straight male and female friends before.)
Just wouldn't want you to be caught off guard haha
  • Are you looking to use a live band or recorded music for you're event? Because I know a great swing band. . .
  • Not in Park Slope, but awesome places to dance.

    Frank's Lounge on Fulton.

    Sputnik on Taffe Place.

    Both in Fort Greene
  • Subject: Deity!

Deity on Atlantic Avenue is very fun and awesome music. Its perhaps one of the nicest bars I've ever been in. And they make the strongest drinks ever, just to warn you.

Sputties is in bed stuy, not ft. green. AND it sucks.
  • How about the Brooklyn Lyceum? Don't know the license issue, but they have bands there, and plenty of slow nights...

Or BAM Cafe, if you're organized and ambitious.

Hmmmm, must be going on the wrong nights, and I would also challenge you on the Bed-Stuy.

Seriously though, I'm not here to argue. At least not right now, about something this insignificant.

    are you kidding?
I've lived 3 blocks from that bar for almost 2.5 years- its def bed stuy and it def sucks.I cant even count the amount of times its closed down at 11 because someone is starting a fight or something, or the amount of times I've gone up there to catch a beer and its closed for a private party on a weeknight. Considering it's the only bar in the hood, you'd think they'd stay on their game a bit more.

And I'd love to challenge you on the bed-stuyness. If ANYTHING it's clinton hill...

I'd go with Clinton Hill, just not Bed-Stuy, no biggie, c'mon.
And I'm sorry if you think Sputnik sucks....for you. I've had lots of friends play there and the downstairs space is great for that. They also had great crowds it these gigs- all friendly, professional, music supporting people. When they first opened, they had a "secret" smoking room in the back, which was a very large, inviting, funky space. They've since converted it to the coat room- and I am very sad about that. ;)

Having said that, I don't doubt that there's trouble there at times. I mean, you got the projects right there, so some shit is bound to go down.

Isn't there another like, really small place around that area? I had a friend that told me to meet him there after Sputnik's and we couldn't find it. Of course, we didn't look around for very long. No need to draw attention to two ladies looking like they're lost in that nabe.
  • Well I believe they have space available at the Gowanus artists space on Douglass by 3rd, but I think they may have some swing/dance nights there already. Doesn't hurt to check it out.
  • I second Royale. They have awesome dnacing on Saturday nights. Lots of un to be had.
  • Subject: Deity!

Seriously, Deity is the best. And its a very new club who's owners who, besides being incredibly charming, are all about the neighborhood. This Friday (and every other Friday) there's a dance party in the basement!

Its at 368 Atlantic Ave between Hoyt and Bond.
  • I'd say pick the location that's most convenient to the folks who dance to swing. What the heck do people wear to these things anyways? Don't you have to dress up and have a partner...like square dancing events?

When we go to the New York Swing Dance Society (nysds.org) in the city people dres all kinds of ways, some wear jeans, some get dressed up. Partners are not requiered and those that come with a partner usually dance with others anyway. At that dance there is a lesson before the band begins and partners rotate during the lesson.
