another abondoned car thread

here's the story. there's a horribly smashed car outside my business - airbags in the front seat, bumper on the ground, windshield smashed. Clearly not in drivable condition. It's been there for at least two months - briefly w/o a plate, now w/ a PA plate on the back. It is across from a collision shop, but they claim no responsibility. It never gets ticketed even though it's illegal 2x/week on ASS days. I called 311 and when I followed up a week later they said the NYPD responded and said that no action is warranted. At 311's suggestion, I called the precinct directly and they said they'd send someone to take a look, but still no luck.

The wreck is an eyesore and prevents street cleaning, yet with no luck with 311 or the 78, I'm at a loss. Any suggestions?

    where on sterling? if the license plate disappeared, it would be disposed of by sanitation.

    business is on 3rd avenue. You're right about the plate, but i'm not inclined to do the removal myself.

    i hear you...we've got a similar situation on sterling over in prospect heights....part of me want to go the plate removal route, but i'm guided by the "two wrongs don't make a right" mentality as well.

    We got one long-abandoned car on Park Place towed by the friendly gesture of a police officer who posts here occasionally. He had previously advised contacting the city marshall, who is responsible for towing cars with significant unpaid tickets (although if it's really not getting ticketed, that might be tough).

    If you have the plate number, you can check the accumulated unpaid tickets at the NYC Dept of Finance site, if you want to make a case with the Marshall. http://nycserv.nyc.gov/NYCServWeb/NYCSERVMain

    Thanks. The one on Sterling is across the street from me. perhaps I'm a magnet for these things. The one on 3rd is just particularly troubling to me because it's directly in front of my business. It has PA plates, and i can't seem to find a way to check it online, but it definitely doesn't have any tickets on the windshield.

    If you click through the first drop down menu on the link I posted you should be able to get to the ticket search window. You can search by plate number, but you need to specify the state of the plate.

    If you can't get it to work, just post the plate number and I'll send u whatever results I can find.

    No one should have to suffer an abandoned car at both his home and work locations! ;)

    If NYPD doesn't care, maybe PA's police will.

    thanks. sadly, just one ticket in late March for that plate. Amazing since it hasn't moved in months and that plate has been on for weeks.

    thanks. sadly, just one ticket in late March for that plate. Amazing since it hasn't moved in months and that plate has been on for weeks.

    My experience has been that the cars with out of state plates get the tickets last. The ticket writers know there's little chance of collecting on out of state fees. On the other hand, NYers have to pay up or risk getting impounded. That's the deal with the abandoned nightmare on Sterling. The NY authorities don't care much because they know the out of state owner isn't going to claim the car... no money in it for the city means no tow. There's got to be something else we can do. I just have no clue what it is.

    You'd think cops would be required to report abandoned vehicles to a national agency. After all, couldn't some abandoned vehicles be connected to crimes that need solving?

    VERY good point. I don't think states cooperate very well when it comes to this stuff. Unless there's a smoking gun there seems to be little info sharing.
