Mail delivery in Park Slope -- horrible
Comments
-
I've tried to minimize my use of the Post Office as much as possible. I pay all my bills online. Wherever possible, I have things delivered by UPS. When I send packages, I do it from the mailboxes etc-type place on Flatbush by the Q. The USPS is basically mostly for delivery of my magazines and catalogues.

ive had great mail service since i moved to no-boca'bush. my carrier will also bring packages up to my 5th floor walk-up, even when its heavy packages from over seas (usually wine from spain)

Stoss!!
Last night at Excelsior you said you lived in TRI-MO-BUSH! -
Whenever I get other people's mail, I always wonder who is sometimes getting my mail.
I get other people's bank statements, credit card offers and other materials akin to recieving a ready made identity theft kit. So someone somewhere can easily rip off my identity thanks to post office mistakes. -

when did it become "identity theft"? ? seriously, didn't it used to be that someone just stole your credit cards, or got cards in your name, yadda yadda. and now--and i'm not saying it's not a giant problem--it has this buzzword description.

i've had two credit cards cloned this year alone, so i'm all for it. but i certainly hope the person who used my card at payless shoes in topeka wasn't actually pretending to be me, because i'd never buy those cheapo shoes. -

Someone got my sister-in-law's social security number and has used that (and her name, I guess) to get jobs. Now the IRS is garnishing my SIL's paychecks to collect taxes owed by this other person. It's a really bad situation. Once someone gets your social security number, you are screwed, apparently.

What a timely topic... my Ebay purchase from Thailand was delivered to my apartment last week. I wasn't home to receive the package, so it went back to the Van Brunt post office. I put out the signature authorization for the carrier to redeliver and leave in my bldg lobby. The package never arrived. I ran into my carrier yesterday and he said that the package guy at Van Brunt "has issues." Apparently, carriers used to go into the storage area and retrieve packages for redelivery, but the guy with issues decided to handle this himself. Consequently, my package is lost in the ether.

Subject: what ever happened to?
what ever happened to dry cleaners/copy shops that would sign for small packages? I just need to order something from a clothing site and there's like nobody that will do this for me? I've heard (via this site) that mailboxes etc. is bullshit - is there any other place i can look into? Please PM me (still haven't quite figured out how to search this thing…
Thanks!

Ansonia Chemist (7th Ave, between 10 & 11 St) has mailboxes for
rent. I have seen people picking up packages held behind the counter.
Their phone is 718-965-0565 if you want to check it out. -

The shipping store on Fifth Ave between Sackett and DeGraw is fine - and they have mailboxes. I don't know what it's called.
Thanks!

There are fewer small businesses around, but if you have a relationship with them (or your neighbors) you can ask them to sign for your package. It's not like that's changed.... -

Listen to Carnivore.
Besides, who can keep up with buying and using stamps before the cost of postage increases? -
What is this magical place "no-boca'bush" where mail men climb stairs to deliver packages?
-
I just had my second package either stolen or mismailed today in the last few weeks. Arg. Thank god for Amex (online orders they refund for you no questions). I've put up a huge sign in my apartment building for the delivery people to not leave packages because they keep getting stolen.
-
the USPS recently sent out a brochure to increase publi awareness of identity theft.
The local carrier, of course, left them in a pile on the floor of our building.
:? Thus driving home the point :?
PUT MY MAIL IN THE DANG BOX !!!!!!!!!! -

I wonder about that.
They call it "Going Postal" not "Going Dental"

The US mail service is still much cheaper than UPS. And the new stamps are good even if they raise the rates. -
I've had THREE, count em, THREE packages go missing when they were delivered and then returned to Van Brunt when I wasn't home. They all were listed as "delivered" on the USPS site, even though I had the receipts to prove that the attempt had been made but not consummated. The people at Van Brunt package window are ok, but I'm utterly convinced that my packages are there with my name facing out clear as day and that, if they would only let me back in that room, that I would find them in 10 seconds. I know this because that's what happened with another package of mine. THe guy searched for like 30 min for it and I finally craned my neck as far as I could and saw it way back on the shelf. I now try desperately to only have things shipped UPS or FedEx.

ARG. Yet another package was delivered to the wrong address! Luckily wherever the mailman decided to leave my package, the people mailed it back to the company.
But this is just ridiculous. I've had 3 packages either lost, stolen, or submitted to the wrong address in 6 months.
Please, for all those whom have had experiences with this, click on the link and submit a complaint. I did this on the last package and they forwarded my complaint to the local office.
If enough of us do it, maybe it can have an effect.

i had all my mail forwarded to a different address. I miss alot of important mail for my house in ps.

i have a deep, cold feeling of dread, as I just got a package redeliver slip for a very valuable international package that's pretty much irreplaceable. Gulp.

Make sure to complain! Getting a bunch of people to complain is about our only shot to do anything about it. And also never use USPS when possible. -
only problem is ive been complaining to the van brunt station for 17 years.
once a year or so i call and biach that the mail is being left in the lobby.
i think ive filled out a farm a couple times as well. so have others in my building. inevitably one has to move on to other portions of ones life
bureaucracy in action  -
in case anyone was losing sleep over my package, I finally got it. Even though it was sent registered, signature required, the mailman dumped it by my door, no signature. Thank god it didn't rain!
(Oh, and this was after I had gotten a redeliver slip, and they never redelivered on the date I requested. It only got redelivered after calling the USPS 800 #) -
This happened to me in Manhattan, but there may be a moral...
I got a package slip once, and went to my local post office the next day to retrieve my package. The window clerk looked for it but didn't find it after a few minutes, and returned to the window saying "it must still be out on the truck."
"But...why would they have put a slip in my box yesterday if they were going to take it out on the truck again today?" I asked. The clerk shrugged and suggested I call the Post Office's 800 number to complain about my carrier and try again the next day. Dubious, I left.
But about a half a block down the street, I saw a mail truck, with the driver inside, taking a quick sandwich break. I walked up and asked him if he knew who delivered to my building. "I do," he said. So I asked him why he put a slip in my box if he was going to try to re-deliver the following day. He blinked. "I didn't do that," he said. "Can I see the slip?" I gave it to him. "Huh. You know, I actually remember this very package, it's definitely in the post office." I asked if he could come find it for me, but he declined, saying he was on his break. I thanked him, said I'd try going back myself, and as I was walking away, I happened to mention that the desk clerk had suggeted I file a complaint about him.
He froze. "He told you to complain about ME?" he said. He asked to see the slip again, then put his sandwich down, started up his truck and said "gimme a couple minutes to park; go back in and wait for me in the lobby. We're gonna take care of this RIGHT NOW."
I returned to the lobby (the desk clerk even waved at me and asked if I was making a complaint, and I just cheerfully said "I'm doing something even better"), and a few minutes later, the carrier appeared at the same window with my package, called me over, and gave it to me. I walked out just as he was turning to the desk clerk and asking, "Now, WHY did you tell her to file a complaint about me when the package was right over on the shelf right there?...."
The moral of the story: sometimes getting results on a post office complaint depends on who you complain TO. -
Queen
I hope you registered a complaint about the slacker behind the counter!

I live in the North Slope. We get mail for our neighbors, the same house number, but on any other parallel street, etc., all the time. for a while we were assuming the landlord's children, who live on the upper three floors, were taking care of it. Then we saw them throw incorrect unopened mail in the garbage. Since then, my wife and I began taking nice neighborhood walks, putting people's mail where it was supposed to go.
If you see us approaching your mailbox, please don't shoot us. We might have your tax return on us. -

Isn't that against some kind of (federal) law?
