Is this a good block in Sunset Park? — Brooklynian

Is this a good block in Sunset Park?

My girlfriend and I are considering moving into a beautiful, huge, cheap apartment on 61st St. between 4th and 5th ave. Obviously we love the apartment for those reasons as well as the neighborhood and it's literally steps to the N + R trains. HOWEVER, it isn't the nicest block. It's not treelined or pretty and there are usually a lot of people hanging out and being loud. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but does anyone know about this area/block and can help us out? Thanks!!

  • thats a pretty quiet block. but it is pretty near the chinatown in brooklyn.
  • The surrounding blocks are very family-oriented. 60th gets the majority of the car traffic, and 61st has some great conveniences.

If memory serves, the reason it isn't so pretty and probably seems loud is that it has much larger buildings than a lot of SP streets. Both 62nd and 63rd have private homes (and lots of trees). Owners of large buildings tend to not want the tree root/leaf hassle - and they usually don't live in the building, so why should they care?

If you LOVE the apt, go for it. If you have some time, you may want to look into renting in a private house. Even one block up (btw 5th and 6th) would make a pretty major difference.

    Good luck!
  • My biggest complaint about the area between 3rd Avenues and 5th Avenues and between 45th streets and 65th streets are people urinating in public. Honest to God.

A smaller complaint is that it can take up to an hour to get into Manhattan from this area by the N or R trains.

This area would look much better with a bunch of bushy, green trees and a lot less litter on the sidewalks.

This area is near good Chinese food markets on 8th Avenue.
  • In Sunset Park the closer to the park the better. Anything below 4th Ave is just a no-no.
61st isn’t bad, but it’s laud and in your face all the time plus there is absolutely nothing to do close by, unless you are willing to walk 15-20 blocks to Bay Ridge. 40’s around the Park have nice apartments too and not too expensive. Good luck.
