Great new bistro in Ditmas Park
I got to try Pomme de Terre, a new French bistro on Newkirk at Argyle Road (right by the Newkirk stop on the Q and B trains). It's from the chef from Farm on Adderly and the man behind Patois. The restaurant is very inexpensive for the quality of food- entrees would easily be at least $5 more each in Park Slope or Prospect Heights. The decor is really homey and comfortable. The food is also very homey but thoughtful and carefully prepared. Our favorite appetizer was the chicken liver pate with cornichons and toast points. The fried squid with lemon aioli was light and tender. The chickory salad with artichoke and chicken leg confit was a nice pairing. The beet salad with orange and nicoise olives was very pretty and fresh. For entrees, two of us got the skate with brown butter and spinach, a standard dish which was very nicely prepared. One of us got the roast chicken on the bone, served with roasted slices of apple and turnip. The chicken was juicy and flavorful and matched well with the roasted veg. The whole roasted branzino with roasted fennel and tomato confit was cooked perfectly- moist and flavorful, and the fish tasted very fresh. The desserts were also great, with the banana caramel pot de creme and the tart tatin being standouts (full disclosure: my wife knows one of the chefs, and he sent out all the desserts for us to try for free).
This is basic French food that's done well and is an incredible value for what they're charging. Definitely make a reservation, because we went on a Tuesday night and the place was packed the entire time.

Thanks for the review! I live in the neighborhood and have been meaning to try this place! I hear it's owned/operated(?) by the same people who on The Farm on Cortelyou.
Howdy, Stranger!
