Arizona Proposal Would Prohibit Race-Based Student Groups

An Arizona legislative committee has passed an amendment to a routine homeland-security bill that would prohibit students at the state’s public universities and community colleges from organizing groups based on race. The amendment was approved by the Arizona House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday. It still awaits a vote by the state’s full House and Senate.

The amendment, introduced by State Rep. Russell K. Pearce, a Republican, would also allow state officials to withhold funds from public schools sponsoring activities that “denigrate American values and the teachings of Western civilization.” The proposal was added to Senate Bill 1108, a measure that has nothing to do with education but was intended to allow designees of mayors and police chiefs to serve on homeland-security advisory councils.

“This bill basically says, ‘You’re here. Adopt American values,’” State Rep. John Kavanagh, a Republican, told The Arizona Republic. “‘If you want a different culture, then fine, go back to that culture,’” he said. —JJ Hermes

  • the Bush Administration has done far scarier and more fascist things than what's implied by this legislation.

The Bush Administration listens to your phone calls with superficial probable cause and without any judicial or legal oversight whatsoever.

The Bush Administration swipes American citizens off the streets of this country and throws them into a legal black hole, without any hint of due process or habeas corpus.

The Bush Administration swipes American citizens off the street anywhere in the world and sends them to countries where they get molested, tortured and abused.

The neocons are as fascist, un-American, and dangerous to the institutions of this country as any terrorist boogeyman they claim to be fighting.
  • Where can you sign up for the white group?
  • i wonder which "teachings of western civilization" they have in mind?

wouldn't want to denigrate the wrong thing.
  • you do have ethnic groups irish, or italian or german something :p groups hehe. i haven't seen the white only besides the racist ones like hte kkk or aryan nation.
  • what is american or western. it is very vague and they would use it to get people they don't like.
  • American values and Western Civilization were introduced when the first group of Natives were slaughtered for their gold and property. This isn't a new thing.
  • The most important American value declined to a new all-time low of €0.625 today.
  • More info:
Additionally, the measure would prohibit students of the state's universities and community colleges from forming groups based in whole or part on the race of their members, such as the Black Business Students Association at Arizona State University or Native Americans United at Northern Arizona University. Those groups would be forbidden from operating on campus.
SB 1108 states, "A primary purpose of public education is to inculcate values of American citizenship. Public tax dollars used in public schools should not be used to denigrate American values and the teachings of Western civilization."
Rep. John Kavanagh, a member of the Appropriations Committee, said he hopes the measure helps return cultural studies in the state's schools to a "melting pot" model.

"This bill basically says, 'You're here. Adopt American values,' " said Kavanagh, a Fountain Hills Republican. "If you want a different culture, then fine, go back to that culture."

since the bill refers to groups based even only "in part" on the race of their members, i imagine you'd find the "white group" in any number of organizations. here are a few i notice at the U of Arizona (trying to omit those that are obviously language-learning clubs, though, of course, languages that aren't big in international business do often particularly attract those descended from those who spoke them):

    ∙ Arizona Israel Alliance
    ∙ Armenian Student Association
    Celtic Cultures Society
∙ Seven Pipers UA Scottish Club
    ∙ Jewish Law Students Association
    ∙ Chabad Jewish Student Center
∙ Hillel Foundation ∙ Kedma: The Orthodox Jewish Student Group
    ∙ Kesher Reform Jewish Students
∙ Koach: Jewish Conservative Movements College[+ tons of other Jewish groups]

then there's the question of whether groups like fraternities which may be more likely to accept you as a member if your father, etc., was a member are based on race or just often end up looking that way. ditto the senate.
  • Russell Pearce (sponsor) is a certifiable dipshit who stepped in it a few years back forwarding neo-nazi emails to supporters.

He is the old guy on the right, with his buddy J. T. Ready on the left:

Here is another picture of J. T. Ready, second from the right:

Did Pearce know Ready to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did Pearce ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial? Yes. Did Pearce strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely -- just as he's sure many of you have heard remarks from people you know with which you strongly disagreed.

But the bill that has caused this recent firestorm wasn't simply controversial. It wasn't simply a bigot's effort to speak out against perceived injustice.

Instead, it expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country -- a view that sees immigration as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America, a view that sees the conflicts in the border towns as rooted primarily in the treaties like NAFTA, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical coyotes and smugglers.

    Whatever.

Yes, and Verizon adds a 9/11 fee on to our phone bills so we get to pay for such operations.

And then Congressional Republicans keep trying to give the telecoms immunity from lawsuits for going along with this B.S.

Um....that's not a "9/11" fee, as in "September 11th", that's a "9-1-1" fee, as in "the number you call if there's an emergency."

The emergency line is the "911" that you're paying for with that fee.

Well, in the NYC-centric view of the world, I suppose. In reality, Phoenix is the fifth largest city in the US (larger than Philadelphia, who I suppose ARE yokels, ), the largest city in the mountain time zone, and the second largest city in the entire West US (behind LA.) There are eight million in NYC, but 300 million in the rest of the US, we are outnumbered and it would make sense to heed warning signs.

....This isn't mine -- it's adapted from a television show. But it says what I want to say.

"I know you like to use that word 'liberal' as if it were a crime. Republicans have tried to turn liberal into a bad word. Well, liberals ended slavery in this country. True, it was a Republican President. But it was a liberal Republican. What happened to liberal Republicans? They got run out of the party. What did liberals do that was so offensive to the Republican party?

"I'll tell you what they did. Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act.

"What did conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things every one.

"So when you try to hurl that label at my feet, 'Liberal,' as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won't work. Because I will pick up that label and I will wear it as a badge of honor."
