Cake — Brooklynian

Cake

I have to get a cake for a baby shower that will feed about 30 people. The goal is for it to be pretty, tasty and not crazy expensive. Any suggestions?

  • Lopez Bakery on 5th Avenue near 19th Street.

  • Costco. Seiously....they sell big sheet cake which are pretty tasty. Call ahead

Ditto on the Costco advise! We get our kids b-day party cakes there and they are MUCHO cheaper than anywhere local.
  • Fairway! The last party we had around Christmas (50 people) we were ready to get the cake from one of the traditional "spend a fortune/get a designer cake" fine bakeries in the Slope. But, we were doing food shopping in Fairway, passed the bakery there and the cakes looked good and turned out tasting great and costing 1/3 to 1/2 the price.

    Double ditto on Costco
Growing up we always got our cakes from Court Street
Even though I have never tried Fairway cakes Im sure they do a good job since their pre-made foods are very good
  • Shouldn't the PC replies be support your local bakery ie; Melissa's, Red Hen ( forget the new name)

since I'm not PC I would go w/Costco.

Red Hen is now Ladybird...but when their cupcakes can cost up to $4, you don't want to know how expensive their cakes are! Costco is the good reply.

But I do like Ladybird's red velvet cupcakes..mmmm

(edited to correct to Ladybird..not Bluebird...they just have a big blue awning!) :?
  • Another thought.. We bought an ice cream cake at Dunkin Doughnuts Baskin Robbins (9th and 5th Ave) for my granddaughter's birthday afew weeks ago. We chose a rather smallish cake but they have larger sizes. If you don't see what you want in the freezer ask a staff person and they will go downstairs and check the supply and bring up what you need. The cake was delicious. I was really suprised!!
  • I have ordered from Costco and they do have good cakes but I do believe that BJs are better. They have good sheetcakes as well and are about 14.99 like Costcos.
  • Lopez Bakery as I suggested above is very good and very inexpensive-you really should try them.
  • Mrs Maxwell's on Atlantic Ave. Got a huge bday sheet cake there for my hubbs and it was delicious! The place is a trip too... gigantic cake factory. LOVE IT.
