Biking to work

There are worse places to start than here...

thanks. I mean, I know what the official bike routes are. I am looking for a place to discuss with other bikers who may be going in the same general direction what to look out for, or if there is a better route than what is shown on the map.

I had a board bookmarked somewhere, but it didn't have much traffic. I'll take a look for it though.
edit: Brooklyn Biker Thread -
This is not Brooklyn-specific but I have found it useful:

Also, have you tried the e-bikes list?

This is a forum that covers commuting by bike, but is not Brooklyn specific. They talk about all the relevant issues - how to deal with clothes, what to eat for breakfast, lights, showers, what type of bike to ride, how far is a good distance, etc. Go back and read through the threads --- very worthwhile.....

and there's always transalt.org
I used to bike to work until my bike was stollen (twice!). There are very very few indoor and/or safe places to park a bike. transalt lists this as the #1 reason people don't bike more often and I agree. I once innocently asked a garage attendant if I could park in his garage. You'd think asked if it was okay to barf on his feet by the way he responded.

That's why I learned two magic words:

If you're going on Ocean Parkway you look out for the traffic making west bound turns. They make the turns very quickly and sometimes it's a igna second until you spot them. I always keep my lights on no matter what time of day. If it works for cars it should work for bikes. Somewhat. -
Thanks for all the feedback. I kind of lost track of this thread for a few days.

Subject: Downtube or other folding bikes?
Hey caaahyoko and anyone else that owns one...
How reliable are folding bikes for commuting? and how heavy? I'm thinking about getting one of these from Downtube: http://www.downtube.com/ss-index.html I'd love some advice!
Thanks

I love using my small folder. And so do other people apparently! I see more and more 16in and 20in wheel folders every week. I don't see any reason to switch to a non-folder after 3 months of consistent riding.
The downtubes are very good. Better than my Dahon. Unless you're over 6 ft, I would go with the Mini. Its about 25lbs, same as my Dahon Curve. I can carry that 2 blocks to the subway when folded up.
Actually, I may get the Mini for the 8 speed internal hub, as I've gotten too fast for my 3 speed one.
If you have any more specific questions, the folding section on bikeforums.net has a ton of helpful people.

Oh, and here are my mapped routes to work:

I even made one of the ways NOT to go. Hopefully someone can learn from my near death experiences.

How long does that bike commute generally take, caaahyoko?

50-60 minutes to midtown. It would be a little faster if I ran red lights :P But I value my life.
Yes, its a little longer than the train ride, but I get in my commute AND my exercise at the same time. So you save time in the end. -
Came across this new site today that might be helpful to bike commuters. It combines google map directions with the bike lane infrastructure around the city. You can choose safest route, faster route, etc.

It's still in Beta mode...runs pretty slowly on my computer
