The Nerd Salon
Okay so there's this thing out in SF called Nerd Salon where once a month a bunch of nerdy people gather at a bar and talk about nerdy stuff. Good times.
Anyway, my roommate just told me about it and he really wants to do something like this in NYC but would rather tell me about it on im and say he wishes someone would set it up rather than actually set it up himself.
That's right, I'm talking shit Marc.
Anyway, would anyone be interested in partaking in this vague exercise/gathering? Post back with your thoughts....

I used to like Secret Science Club at Union Hall for this, but it's not so secret anymore and takes a little too much effort to get in some months.
I'd be interested to see something like this develop, but like your roommate, I'm sitting on my laurels waiting for someone else to get 'er going.
Any ideas on when, where?
On a side note, do you think the people who had a little robot parade through the slope last week (fun thing to walk across on 7th Ave) would come in costume??? -
what exactly are "nerd things"? I'm a self proclaimed nerd but I'm not cool-nerdy enough to play video games or anything like that haha.
-
its a trap i tell you
take you not your 20-sided dice into the lair of the jock -
I came across the SF Nerd Salon via a posting on io9 so my hope is that nerdy here means sci fi and such but I suppose, given freedom of speech and whatnot, we could talk about whatever we feel like. Possibly even "cool" non-nerdy things. I dunno, mostly I think they just drink a lot.
As for location, I dunno. I really like Black Sheep and they seem like they'd be open to something like this. However, they do play sports and that doesn't feel right for this type of event. But is it ok since it's football (UK)? -
Carmen, I'm with you.....but the Robot Parade sounds great (sad I missed it). I'd be up for a nerdy meetup.
-
for the record - i never leave the apartment without costume and/or props.
that said, i play sports and don't read sci-fi so i'm not exactly sure where i fit in this whole scenario but am happy a discussion thread has started! -
not to put too fine a point on it, but a happy hour organized by a web site isn't nerdy enough for you?
i am out-classed. -
quite possibly could this be a good excuse to drag out my LOTR trivial pursuit? Or is that too nerdy?
-
can we just get a PS happyhour please? I'm a semi compulsive poster on here these days and I want to meet some of you people.
-
Carmen: just organize one. we'll show up. for pointers, come to the PH/CH bar crawl tonight.
Nerd Club: I believe there is one that meets once a month near NYU somewhere. a lot of people I know who are in their dorktastic programs attend. I don't - it's a little too hipster for me, frankly. -
Where would be a good place to organize said happyhour? Maybe The Gate? I'm trying to think of someplace not cramped...

The uber-geek buried deep within me feels the need to differentiate between a happy hour (geeks who can only hang for a few hours cause they need to run home to play Warcraft) and a bar crawl (geeks whose hobby IS drinking).
i am out-classed.
Sweet Tea- Are you representing thins evening? -
so very much into a nerd meet up.

I think it is safe to say that if you can answer three of the following questions you are a nerd:
1) What is the difference between a Mark 2 viper and a Mark 7 viper on Battlestar Galactica?
2) Why is the MacBook Air so light?
3) What does 'pwned' mean?
4) Do you think you have LOST all figured out?
5) How many copies of Windows XP are you hoarding? -

I can only answer #3, and maybe take a stab at #1. OTOH, I could add a few to the list:
1) What is the difference between a Mark 2 viper and a Mark 7 viper on Battlestar Galactica?
2) Why is the MacBook Air so light?
3) What does 'pwned' mean?
4) Do you think you have LOST all figured out?
5) How many copies of Windows XP are you hoarding?
6) What is Luke Skywalker's call sign?
7) What's your favorite fanfic pairing?
8 ) How many versions of the Civilization games have you played? -
1) you got me
2) also got me, I hate macs
2) Owned, l337
4) i'm nerdy enough that I don't even watch lost. I surf the interwebs instead
5) I'm also nerdy enough to not hoard xp because, as a microsoft partner, we upgraded our servers to vista and its a big pita to run xp on vpn. However, i did spend 3 hours picking apart vista and it runs like a dream now! -
OH and here's one
9) Where did the phrase "all your ___ are belong to me" originate? Hint- its the same (disputed) origination of l33t speak such as h4x0rs and t3h. -

Let's not confuse nerds with geeks. The following question is more appropriate for geeks:
5) How many copies of Windows XP are you hoarding?
This question is for nerds:
6) What is Luke Skywalker's call sign?
And this question is debatable...both nerds and geeks could answer "yes" to it:
8 ) How many versions of the Civilization games have you played? -
oh cmon are we going to get technical on the nerd v. geek thing? Another elitist happyhour ftl
-

It's the height of geekery!
Honestly, I've always thought "nerd" and "geek" were synonymous, though I prefer "geek."
Back to the OT, is someone organizing a nerd/geek meetup? Or does everyone plan to attend the PH happy hour on Thursday and geek out there? -
nerd and geek can be synonymous on the surface but once you go deeper into the individual does the distinction become more apparent. some cross borders even.
Howdy, Stranger!
