Urgent care in the slope...
Is there an urgent care/ walk-in clinic anywhere around here? As some of you may recall I effed up my finger last week and went to the ER- it seems to be ok, but last night I came down wit a 103 degree fever which is still rising at the moment. I'ma bit concerned that it might mean an infection, and even if not I'd like to get checked. I will do anything in my power to avoid methodist.

carmen, i am not a doctor. nor am i medical professional. so if you follow this advice and end up in a coma i can't be held responsible.
that said, my father was a doctor and i grew up reading medical journals and i'm pretty savvy/ knowledgable about health stuff. more likely than not, you have a virus. unless your neck is stiff or you feel like you're actually dying (as opposed to kind of shitty), or you really seriously can't keep anything down for a day, you don't need to see the doctor unless you get worse.
remember, fevers get higher at night. tylenol or ibuprofen will lower them.
maybe you should call your doctor, instead of paying $$ at the urgent care to be told exactly what he/she will tell you on the phone. -
Carmen..Don't follow my advice either..but.. Do I recall you have been taking an antibiotic after your finger cut? When you say the finger seems ok.. are you saying that there is no redness,swelling, signs of infection?
If the answers are yes to the antibiotic and no to questions 2,3,4 you might wait it out.
It is a rainy, nasty day and I am sure you feel bad enough where u would rather just curl up in bed and sweat the fever out.
If not..Dr Ifkar Din 718 965 1234, corner of 5th Ave and 7th street.. you can get an appointment today, his Pa's name is Jasmine (she is good) and Dr Din is not an alarmest but he is an excellent diagnostician. The office is nothing fancy but the wait won't be long. -
call Dr. Raffinan and see if he can see you today. 212-537-5039. He has a PS office. Or go to the clinic on Atlantic/Clinton and see Dr. Stroud as a walk in

I am on antibiotics, you are correct, but they did mention if i got a fever to come back in (although I really dont want to go back into the er for another 100 bucks.) If it gets any higher I'm going to check out one of the places listed. -
Feel better and don't stress out. Worrying will only make you more miserable. Pop some tylenol and take a nap. See how you feel by tonight.
I hate going to the doctors so personally I'll avoid it for a fever unless I start seeing other symptoms. The way I see it, a fever is a good sign that your body is doing what it's supposed to do, fighting off sickness/infection. A natural way to fight off illness.
Relax and let it run it's course. I am NOT a doctor, I should note. -

I'm generally a doctorphobe as well, I try to avoid going at all costs, but I've been sick so much off and on the past few weeks that I'm starting to consider just throwing myself onto a doctors doorstep with a sign that says "fix me" -

how does the cut look? I got a staff infection once and that shit was scary. I had 2 red lines marching out of my foot (where I had stepped on glass) up toward my heart. You don't want to mess around with that shit

Flexichick is right. If it is hot to the touch and looks like red is spreading away from the wound towards your heart it could very well be infected. if it is you would need anti-biotics NOW. don't mess around with this...get some help

Yep, but it might not be responding to THOSE antibiotics. I had to take some heavy duty stuff to get rid of the infection. A few hours more and they said I'd be in the hospital gettng IV antibiotics. -
i had to double dose anti biotics because what was originally given to me didn't work...you might need a different or stronger prescription. that's all i'm saying..not a doctor!

it doesnt look infected (its not red or hot to the touch and it doesnt hurt really.) It actually feels pretty numb and hard just about everywhere above the knuckle, which leads me to believe it's healing OK and will scab pretty soon. I've had infected cuts before and this doesn't SEEM infected, although my big fear is (again, being a freak about it) my friend had a cut that turned his blood septic basically overnight and the cut never even looked bad. Suddenly he just had a crazy fever and a blood infection.
But, like I said, im being a bit of a freak and I think the fever is clouding my judgment
I <3 this board though, you guys always help me out with stuff in the neighborhood with a quickness. -
i'm not a doctor, but i think you should go see one, if only to allay your fears.

I am a medical professional, and my advice is to make sure you see someone ASAP, be it the ER, clinic or private practice. A very high fever like yours is definitely not something you want to mess around with, as you could be septic already. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition. Please make sure you see someone TODAY. Take care of yourself! -
Carmen, I don't mean to be alarmist, but I have lost two friends in the last three years because they each tried to self-medicate rather than seeing a doctor. One was in her fifties and the other was a 30-year old guy.
Please see a doctor!
(I am not a doctor, nor am I a particular fan of the profession, but the consequences of avoiding them are just not acceptable...). -
:twisted: I'm playing devils advocate here. If you're fine enough to hang out on the boards and you don't have signs of an infection (I've had one on a toe once and it was, at least to me, pretty obvious) then don't go to a doc. OR just call one. call Burton Fletcher's office, even though he's not there his other doctor is there and can give you advice over the phone. I've done this before. Also there is a walk-in clinic at Atlantic and Clinton? Dr. Stouds works there. They'll see you within the hour usually.

Alright I decided to wait it out for a day (mostly because clients started calling and now its 6...) the fever is fluctuating from around 100.5-101.8, but I think thats a good sign (isnt that "breaking"?) I'm going to get some OJ and try to sleep it off tonight...if the fever hasn't gone down by tomorrow it's off to the doctor.

I think it is a good sign that it evening and the fever is not as high as yesterday evening. If it spikes in the night and doesn't go down then might be time for the dreaded trip to the er but hopefully if you take tylenol and sleep by morning it will be better. -
There is a walk in clinic on Atlantic and Clinton. I think it used to be a D.O.C.S. but is now just affiliated with LICH

well im not dead.
Fever is holding steady in the low 100.xx (was just 100.5.) I really think the finger is fine and is not a contributing factor. I took some tylenol so hopefully it'll go down and I can venture out of the house to move my car (goddamn street cleaning) and get some frozen yogurt and provisions.

glad to hear you are feeling better. the tylenol will bring down that fever and give you afew good hours to run errands. Dress warm..It is damp and rainy outside.

As a sidenote, the secretary said tha Dr. Din doesn't take appts and only does walk ins. Give him a shot! -
So is Dr. Din a clinic? And you can just walk in with your ailment? What does it say on the awning? I have "clinic" envy every time I go to the burbs.

its not a clinic, its a bunch of independent doctors and he happens to be one that only does walk ins. but yes i think you can just walk in. its a black marble building with a red awning, right on the corner of 5th ave and 7th st. you cant miss it.
